I would say closer to wolf than lion. The whole howling at the moon thing, makes me say that.
Scene from a movie.
SPOILER!!:
or maybe a hyena

Ha. Do you think he's from EARTH? No. He's from Gaia. And he was created in a lab anyway. Don't try to think of it in Earth terms. JEEZ
He wasn't created in a lab. He was captured and experimented on. If he was created in a lab, he wouldn't have a father that saved cosmo canyon. xP
Obviously that isn't his physical grandfather. I mean it is just the term used because he raised Red...I mean he knew he had parents and that the both got knocked off so being raised by a human you'd just choose a new term of endearment right?
As to the question at hand though I think he is definitely some sort of canine, I think I even remember some little girl calling him a dog in the game. I mean with all the lunar stuff too it makes a lot of sense. Funny how the games never have answered this question...I guess there will be a game that'll come out in a few years to make a few bucks and will finally reveal it.

No, you wish there was. The rest of your post makes sense logically, but that does not. Nobody's gonna make a game about Red XIII. If someone is asking about him, they'll be interested and buy FFVII, making a game explaining exactly what he is would kill it, since everything would be explained by google and people would stop buying FFVII.
And the little girl called him a dog because she's a fuc king little girl and little girls are stupid.
Bestiality, duh.
Why does Bugenhagen float around on the green remnants of a torso?
I'd say he's a wolf. Hojo saw him, went "oh shit, that thing can talk!" so he captured him and genetically modded him out, for the sole purpose of eventually making another PSP game, "Final Fantasy VII: This Cash Cow Ain't Milked Dry Yet!", which will prominently create an entire lineage for Red, and ending with the battle for Cosmo Canyon, with the final scene being Seto turning to stone.
Because we need an entire game to fully clear up that cutscene.
Edit: And props to Atma-Noah for beating me to the punch on that one. I didn't fully read the thread.

...Honestly, I don't think sequels were intended when Final Fantasy VII first came out in 1997. The Compilation was revealed six years later for ****s sake. It makes me sick and tired when people relate back to the first game to pile on blame for the cash grabbing sequels, which going by the reception, they were pretty much asked for. If you don't want something, don't ask for it and don't buy it; end of story. Just don't complain when other people want it. ><
Back to the matter at hand. He strikes me as a wolf/dog type character - I wouldn't say he was really feline. As mentioned before, there's the howling at the moon thing. I guess if you pay attention to his tail you'll find out (silly, I know).
He's pretty wise and has picked up a lot from Bugenhagen, so they wanted an intelligent sounding voice. Not that Americans don't have that kind of voice, but for some reason people put the connection together. =/Originally Posted by JuzamDjinn
He did Cait Sith as well apparently, who has a more... Scott accent? I think? I don't quite remember, but I picked that up somewhere.
It looks more like a howling cat to me.
I think he's some kind of A-Sexual Wolf Lion or something along those lines, I say this because
Spoiler: at the end of FF7, you can see him with some kids so obviously he can lay eggs or something, unless I missed the female one
Plus
Spoiler: 500 years later, and he is still alive, he obviously gotta be something special

Mammals don't lay eggs. I think there's one or two exceptions, but no, dog/feline types don't.
Also, his species age differently to humans. Kind of like how one year to us is seven for dogs, but in his case, it's much better. In Final Fantasy VII, he'd been alive for forty-odd years and yet had only really aged fourteen/fifteen years.
Making him roughly =150~ years old, "500 years later"
This is based off the fact that he is from Earth. Red was not as pointed out earlier in this thread. Then again most animals that lay eggs can't fertilize their own egg. Then again the inbreeding could explain how he could talk.
As for my opinion. He is a dog like creature. Look at his structure. There is nothing feline like there.

Crao Porr Cock8! Need I say more!?My awards:
He wasnt created in a lab he was captured by Shinra, he had a home, mother and father.
On the actual topic I think he was more of a cat family sort of guy, always seemed to fit untill I saw the post about him being a wolf cos of the howling at the moon thing,
Im gonna have to do some serious thinking now
Games beaten:- Crisis core, FF7 FF9 FF10. I need more time to game
I think Red XIII is Red XIII, a non named race created for the game? Why? Because they can.

He's basically a mountain lion isn't he? His dad had the big mane and everything. I mean maybe there's some technical FF name for his species, but mountain lion pretty much sums it up.

This would be my guess.

Unnamed feline-esque species. So that kinda rules wolf out doesn't it.
