Your Pick for Game of the Year (2010)

Well, it looks like we're in the last month of 2010, so I thought it'd be cool to see which game TFF members would choose for their "Game of the Year". Sooo....

Out of all the games that were released and you played this year, which one would you say would be your "Game of the Year" and why?

I'll come back to submit my answer once I thought it over a bit more.

    Game of the Year:
Ys SEVEN - why? is has one of the best intros of any game to start with, it has a great list of music, battle system is really creative (especially with its 7 playable characters) and it has a nice compelling storyline with twists and turn, and in the end, wraps up nicely. I think I said enough.

Re: Your Pick for Game of the Year (2010)

For me, it's pretty close between 4 games. Mass Effect 2 is the first as it was not only an amazing experience, but also because it was such a radical evolution from the original. That evolution is a double edged sword, however, as the streamlining process also removed a lot of things I liked from the original. On some levels, the game isn't even an RPG anymore.

The second game on my list is Heavy Rain. The concept behind this 'game' was simply phenomenal and I applaud Quantic Dream for doing something outside the box and pushing the definition of the medium outwards. There were some snags in the execution, however. The control and technical issues I could ignore, but there are some design issues that could have been dealt with differently, mostly relating to the multiple permutations in which the plot can advance.

Third, God of War 3 makes my list. Epic locations/bosses/scale - check. Amazing graphics - check. Controls and plays fantastically - check. Concludes the trilogy in a worthy fashion - half a check (some of the ending scenes were a little lame). Fantastic game - double check. My only complaint with this one is that it's hardly fresh. For the most part it's the same God of War we've come to expect from the other 2 titles that proceeded it.

Lastly, Red Dead Redemption. Grand Theft Auto is obsolete as far as I'm concerned. This game blew every GTA game out of the water. The world was the most believable I've ever seen. The characters were great, the story engaging and the gameplay was fun, albeit a bit dated using the GTA 4 engine. The shooting mechanics would be my only complaint about this one. But I've never really considered that to be Rockstar's strong suit. The most important thing is the world and they nailed it.

And the winner is-----------------------------------------------Red Dead Redemption!

    Until now!

I agree with Jin. Red Dead Redemption would me my choice for game of the year as well(closely followed by Mass Effect 2). As well as what has been pointed out it surprised me as I thought a western would never work as a game never mind as a sandbox experience. And has there ever been a bad guy( or bad guys) as hateable as Edgar Ross and the federal agents. A game which is as absorbing as it is fun to play. The vibrant and dynamic world was the highlight, from mexican deserts, to rainy plains, to swamps and my personal favourite, the mountainous forest covered in snow.

Honourable mentions to Mass Effect 2, Deadly Premonition and MGS: Peace Walker.

I gotta go with Red Dead Redemption, it's just awesome to see a good western game in general.

I only played like two or three new games this year, so maybe I shouldn't vote in this... but I will anyway, because I'm a troublemaker.

Fallout: New Vegas is my favorite game I played this year. Loved the setting, the characters, the gameplay (which was Fallout 3 again with a few tweaks but oh well) and the multifaceted story that changed depending upon your actions.

Maybe my vote would be different if I'd played Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M, Donkey Kong Country Returns, or Kirby's Epic Yarn... but I haven't. Anyhoo...

Re: Your Pick for Game of the Year (2010)

I would say, for the moment, Fallout: New Vegas. I haven't played too much of it so far, but it is a great game. I'm not big on FPS games, but it's something different, and that is what makes it good.
I'd also like to add Nier. It's my favourite PS3 game, but since it doesn't get high marks in a lot of people's books, I placed it on my own list. And technically, it came out in 2009 in Japan but 2010 here so, whether it counts or not I don't know.

Oh, what the hell, New Vegas is definitely my pick.

Maybe when I finally get to play the new Assassin's Creed game my pick will be different .

*EDIT:* I'm playing the new Assassin's Creed right now, and it is slowly overtaking Fallout. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Your Pick for Game of the Year (2010)

    I'm stuck between three.

    Heavy Rain.
Heavy Rain is a type of gaming experience like no other. David Cage did a wonderful job on it, despite a few flaws in his storytelling abilities. Normand Corbeil did a fantastic job on the soundtrack, which with certain songs still raises the hairs on the back of my neck. When you play this game, you feel as if you're in control of so much and it can be stressful when trying to make a decision in the unthinkable circumstances your characters find themselves in.

    Red Dead Redemption.
I didn't experience any problem with this game at all. I didn't even buy it because I wanted it, but purely because two college friends said they were going to get it (...and they still haven't got it). I've not been a huge GTA fan, but Rockstar's name was on it, so it was bound to be good. And I'm glad I bought it. It's been one of the most played games I've purchased this year. The story was one of the best stories I've played through on a Rockstar game, and it really gave off the western feel. Parts of the soundtrack were beautiful, and I'll never forget Compass being played on the way back to John's ranch as I rode through the snow. The ending was unexpected, and hurt. John Marston isn't quite the new Chuck Norris, but damn, he's a character.

Online play is decent too. It does make you work pretty hard if you want the good things; and some of the things which should be fairly easy to obtain - there's not much in the way of female characters. If that's all I have to complain about though, then it's not even worth it. Loads to do online, and muy divertido.

DLC is awesome as well, from what I've played of it. I'll give it to them, Rockstar can make DLC worth the £8 per DLC.

    Dragon Age: Ultimate Edition.
The original game came out last year, but this one came within the last month. Basically, the whole game and all of the DLC. While I haven't finished all of the DLC packages, if they're anything like the game and the add-ons I have played, then this deserves a vote from me. The PC version is by far the best version in my opinion, but it's great on consoles too. There's over a hundred hours of things to do in this game, and many choices to make.

And... heh. Red Dead Redemption takes it I suppose.

New Vegas didn't quite do it for me to be in with the above. I liked the game, yes, but I found more problems than enjoyment from it; uncomplicated quests, bugged areas, bugged characters, bugged items, the constant sticking and the restarting of my console... I won't play it again until I have the GOTY edition, and that had better have some damn working patches.

    World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

    I don't care if it's not out til Tuesday, I've seen enough of it to know already. >_>;

and I'm not kidding. The sad part is, it's being released at the very very end of the year, and I guarantee in 20 days it'll be the top selling game of 2010.

I have played a shitload of excellent games this year, but the top 4 standouts for me are

    Mass Effect 2
    Heavy Rain
    Fallout: New Vegas
    Red Dead Redemption

Personally I think Fallout will take. No real specific reason.

Sitting here waiting for Rocky, and Che to notice me!!

I'm going to have to go with Mass Effect 2 as well for my personal game of the year. However I played more Borderlands this year than any other game... still love it. Although I can't say Borderlands as that was released in 2009. >.>

Re: Your Pick for Game of the Year (2010)

I haven't really been getting too many new games until recently, but of the new ones I've gotten, so far Gran Turismo 5 and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow have impressed me the most. Sure, both are nothing new, but they're still fun, and as of right now fun is all I care about. As for 2011, cast my vote for LittleBIGPlanet 2. I probably won't be playing much else until 2012.

Re: Your Pick for Game of the Year (2010)

My top 5 in no order are

Final Fantasy XIII: I know lots of people hated the game, I really liked it. The combat system and Graphics made this game for me. Best looking game on the ps3 in my opinion. The story brought the whole experience down, but the gameplay after the first 2 hours more than made up for it.

God of War 3: Graphics are very close to Final Fantasy. Continues the same great story from the past GoW games. Then there is that addictive action style gameplay. I have been hooked on action games since castlevania and this series has kept me playing action games.

Starcraft 2: In college, I was an rts junkie. I havent played many in the past 4 years, but this game brought back my love for this style of game. It doesnt really feature anything new to the genre, but the story was amazing until the end. The multiplayer and new battlenet system is amazing and has really kept me playing this game for as long as I have.

Castle Crashers(ps3): I am cheating on this one, but I never owned a xbox360 so when this came out mid august. I sank a lot of hours leveling different characters, collecting animal orbs and collecting weapons. Just an easy addictive game.

Call of Duty Black Ops: My fps for the year. Same great multiplayer as the last ones. There are some really good maps as with the last game. I enjoyed the zombie game for a night. But I bought and play this game for the online multiplayer. Thought now that it has splitscreen lan I might try it some night with friends.

    Scene from a movie.
    SPOILER!!:
[Having pulled over a speeding driver.]
Mac: All right, how about Cat Game?
Foster: Cat Game? What's the record?
Mac: Thorny did six, but I think you can do ten.
    Foster: Ten? Starting right meow?
[They go up to the car.]
    Driver: Sorry about the...
Foster: All right meow. Hand over your license and registration.
[The man gives him his license.]
Foster: Your registration? Hurry up meow.
    Driver: [laughing] Sorry.
Foster: Is there something funny here boy?
    Driver: Oh, no.
Foster: Then why you laughing, Mister... Larry Johnson?
    [Foster stares at him.]
Foster: All right meow, where were we?
Driver: Excuse me, are you saying meow?
    Foster: Am I saying meow?
    Driver: I thought...
Foster: Don't think boy. Meow, do you know how fast you were going?
    [The man laughs.]
Foster: Meow. What is so damn funny?
Driver: I could have sworn you said meow.
Foster: Do I look like a cat to you, boy? Am I jumpin' around all nimbly-bimbly from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer? DO YOU SEE ME EATING MICE?
    [The man is uncontrollably laughing.]
Foster: You stop laughing right meow!
Driver: [Stops and swallows hard.] Yes sir.
Foster: Meow, I'm gonna have to give you a ticket on this one. No buts meow. It's the law.
[Rips off the ticket and hands it to the man.]
Foster: Not so funny meow, is it?
[Foster gets up to leave, but Mac shakes his hands at him, indicating only nine meows.]
    Foster: Meow!
