What was your first M-rated game?

So, fellow TFFers. Do you remember the first game you played or bought that had a "M" for the rating, or some other kind of symbol that meant it was for mature gamers?

The first M-rated game I played was a Grand Theft Auto game on the PC, though I can't recall exactly which one it would be. It was a fairly long time ago. My brother borrowed it from a friend, and he left it running on the computer one evening and I crept in the computer room and played a bit of it. I remember that I thought it was fun going around and stealing cars, but I didn't want to run the people over. I don't think I did any of the mission stuff that popped up on screen either. I spent most of the time just driving around.

Devil May Cry 3 was the first I ever bought though. I never beat it either. Waaay too hard for me. Haha...

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

Yeah, I remember perfectly. I received the original Grand Theft Auto on the PS1 for my ninth birthday. I didnt play any of the story though, just spent hours on end running people over or using the flamethrower to set them on fire, with a giant grin on my face as I watched them burn. This was soon followed by Doom.

The difference between youths playing really gory games like Gears of war or the likes now and people of my age group playing the equivalent 10-15 years ago is that because of the 2D or the horrible graphics, the player was detached from the violence whereas youths now are subject to it in HD. It is sort of horrendous when I am in a games store and I see a preteen kid threatening to throw a tantrum if their mother doesnt buy the latest CoD or whatever. That kind of stuff would have had quite an effect on me 10 years ago.

Hmm... first M rated title i ever played was Perfect Dark, I borrowed it from my brother during my HS years. I have two games that tie for first in the buying category MW2 and NGS2.

EDIT: the first game i played wasn't Perfect Dark, finally remembered what it was... Metal Gear Solid 1

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

Grand Theft Auto 2 was mine. Obviously, I wasn't allowed to buy it, but I was in the shop at the time, and out of my own pocket money.

See, I was about 9-10, and my parents were OK with it back then because of how unrealistic it looked, and knew that it wouldn't be able to influence me. GTA 2 was hilarious back in the day (especially when you pressed O rapidly, the character would let out a flurry of gas, which of course is funny to any 9-10 year old ). You couldn't take anything seriously because the graphics were so bad. It was darkly humourous. But nowadays, there is no way I would let a 9-10 year old play, for example, GTA IV because of how realistic it is.

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

The only M rated game I remember playing ever was Conker's Bad Fur Day for the N64, and that was well into college. It was an awesome game, though. Pretty difficult controls at times, but the scenarios were a lot of fun. And of course, everyone remember the great mighty poo, who's going to throw his shit at you, right? (Some of the humor wasn't as funny as the developers seemed to think it was, though...) Anyhoo...

Mine was N64's golden eye, then perfect dark, then resident evil 2(which is my favorite of the series*

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

My first M-rated game was Doom II on the computer, I played it on my uncle's computer when I was like 9 or 10 lol. It was fun! I ended up beating it too haha. The first M-rated game I bought (more like had my uncle buy for me) was Perfect Dark. I was offended by all the swear words so I turned the language filtering on, lol. I think I was like, 11-12 when I got it. The first M-rated game I actually bought was like... Castlevania: Curse of Darkness I think. I bought it a week after my 17th b-day.

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

You guys all have a much better memory then me... I remembering playing Doom 2 so if that was M. It was definately my first game, I played with an M rating. As for buying when I was 12 or 13 I got the first Diablo. That game was pretty scary then, when I first fought the butcher I freaked out and didnt play the game for a while. That was also my first time playing a video game online.

Edit: I actually looked it up, the game came out in January of 1997 so my guess I was 12.

    Scene from a movie.
    SPOILER!!:
[Having pulled over a speeding driver.]
Mac: All right, how about Cat Game?
Foster: Cat Game? What's the record?
Mac: Thorny did six, but I think you can do ten.
    Foster: Ten? Starting right meow?
[They go up to the car.]
    Driver: Sorry about the...
Foster: All right meow. Hand over your license and registration.
[The man gives him his license.]
Foster: Your registration? Hurry up meow.
    Driver: [laughing] Sorry.
Foster: Is there something funny here boy?
    Driver: Oh, no.
Foster: Then why you laughing, Mister... Larry Johnson?
    [Foster stares at him.]
Foster: All right meow, where were we?
Driver: Excuse me, are you saying meow?
    Foster: Am I saying meow?
    Driver: I thought...
Foster: Don't think boy. Meow, do you know how fast you were going?
    [The man laughs.]
Foster: Meow. What is so damn funny?
Driver: I could have sworn you said meow.
Foster: Do I look like a cat to you, boy? Am I jumpin' around all nimbly-bimbly from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer? DO YOU SEE ME EATING MICE?
    [The man is uncontrollably laughing.]
Foster: You stop laughing right meow!
Driver: [Stops and swallows hard.] Yes sir.
Foster: Meow, I'm gonna have to give you a ticket on this one. No buts meow. It's the law.
[Rips off the ticket and hands it to the man.]
Foster: Not so funny meow, is it?
[Foster gets up to leave, but Mac shakes his hands at him, indicating only nine meows.]
    Foster: Meow!

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

I have a strong feeling it was Shadow Man. I remember mum getting it for me the same time my brother got Final Fantasy VIII, and at the time we didn't have many games between us. So... by elimination, Shadow Man.

As for the first game I bought... umm... San Andreas I think, although that might not count (I had chicken pox, couldn't leave the house, so I gave my mum £10 to pick it up for me so that I had something to do). First mature game I bought would probably be... Dragon Age. I've paid for many mature games since, but that was the first game I bought without an adult present or with ID... I was seventeen.

EDIT: Btw, I apparently M rated is 17+ over there? Over here, M would be 15+... I was talking about 18 games, even though Shadow Man is 15, but was apparently M rated and I was only eight when I played it.

I doubt it. The ESRB wasn't established until a year after Mortal Kombat hit home consoles.

    Rated T for teen.

I may be remembering it wrong, but I believe the first M rated game I played was Conker's Bad Fur day. That is, unless we count Doom. It didn't have a rating at the time, but since it's been re-released so many times, it now has one.

    Until now!

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

Yeah but its one of the main reasons the ESRB was created, you just know they wanted to hit that bad boy with a 18's cert.

Yeah "18's", thats what we used to call the cert back in the day.. Good times..

Mine was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Like Dodie, I just liked to steal cars and drive around. I especially enjoyed stealing the vespas and motorcycles and driving at night in the rain while listening to really deep 80's music.

    Yeah, man. Yeah.

Lover I don't play to win, but for the thrill until I'm spent.

Indeed, I'm fairly certain that you're right about the Mortal Kombat controversy being one of the direct causes of the creation of the ESRB. It's funny to think now how tame it is by comparison.

    Until now!

Re: What was your first M-rated game?

I honestly have no idea, I've been playing games since a very young age lol. I remember starting off as a kid watching my brother play Wolfenstein 3D and Doom as a four year old, I loved watching hahaha. It never really scared me back then surprisingly. The first possible M rated game I played may have been Mortal Kombat for Sega Mega Drive or something on that game system. I'm not totally certain. That game used to give me the creeps at times but trust my brother to buy me something like that at a young age! XD

MK1 for the Genesis. I was seven; it was glorious. My parents never cared about the ESRB, as they figured my bro and I were smart enough to discern games from reality.
