Is crono trigger on DS? I'd go with that one if so
What should be the next RPG I buy for DS? I'm sorta trying to decide between Etrian Odyssey II and Dragon Quest IX but if you have any other game suggestions that would be great (I also need an explanation for why I should buy it, if that's not too much to ask) Thanks

Yeah, its already on my "to get in future" list haha
if you like the Dragon Quest series, definitely get DQ9 and DQ5 as well. Both games have grade A gameplay and DQ9 in particular has a lot of depth and replay value, so definitely give it a shot if you get the chance, they will keep you busy lol.

hahas, updated July 28th (oldie but goodie!):
Have you any interest in the Pokemon games at all? Pokemon Black and White are coming out in the soon time (I'm not exactly sure how soon) and Pokemon Pearl, Sapphire, and Platinum are already out, as well as remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver. I have also heard good things about Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, and the Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance series is pretty good, though those aren't strictly RPG's. Of course, if you've never played them before, Final Fantasy III and IV are great games.
Unfortunately, I haven't played a lot of RPG's for the DS myself. I will say that I would not recommend Sonic Chronicles; the battle system for that game is really frustrating and slows the game down badly, and the soundtrack is made of poorly done midi files. Kinda sucks, because the story and characterization was pretty good. Anyhoo...

I would for sure go for the Pokemon games. Once you play them once you will become addicted to them.
I have got a load of RPGs for DS, and I'd probably recommend all of them really.
Top of the list is The World Ends With You. It is a fantastic Action-RPG game. It is unique, fun and has a ton of replay value.
Unfortunately I don't have Dragon Quest IX, but I would certainly recommend DQV. It has a great story, and is really fun to play. I am a fan of the DQ games, and if you are too, definitely get it.
One more I will recommend is Children Of Mana. It's made by Square-Enix, so you know it's going to be good. It plays like Zelda really, especially the DS Zelda games. It is a really fun game, with plenty to do. It's also a good challenge, so if you like to be challenged this is for you.
Other than that, the FF games are great, the Zelda games are good. Obviously, Pokémon is a must have for DS, and also Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.
I would go for games like KH 358/2 days and if you want to get into the Ys games theres Legacy of Ys: Book I&II which has two rpgs in one cartridge.

After putting in a fair amount of time - there is no game clock to say how much, lol - I would recommend Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light if you like old-school RPGs. In order to know what the next objective in the story, the player must talk to towns people whom also give tips to fight monsters and other tidbits on the game. 4 Heroes of Light feels like a Dragon Quest game because each town has its problem that the hero(es) must solve. There are 28 crowns (jobs) that can be unlocked, some through story progression & some through other means. Jobs & equipment can be upgraded through gems that are acquired in fights; there is also a crown - Merchant - that increases gem drop rate at the end of battle and has two abilities that allows them to get gems during battle. I've just unlocked this class and have been collecting gems.
There are a few flaws in the game such as: no quicksave feature, easy to get lost if not attentive and thorough, & auto-target in battle. The player selects what each character does during their turn but the AI decides the selecting process; eventually the player will be able to figure out what enemy is going to get attacked first. I haven't really had an issue with the AI selecting targets as it has done a very good job. There is also a 15 item limit on each character including equipment and spell-books - there is a bank to deposit extra items - and this can be a detraction to some. If the player dies they are sent back to the last town they were in and lose half their gems; I'm not entirely sure about the amount of gems lost just that gems are lost, therefore most people just restart the game because the fellow who saves the game appears often. Later in the game there is an accessory - Gem Collector - that allows the player to keep all their gems if they die. This brings up a feature that the player-base would have liked in the game - soft reset. The characters do have their own personality and even though this game is not story heavy they are pretty well done for what the game sets out to be.
Edit: So I figured out exactly what happens to gems when the player gets a game over. 50% of a randomly selected gem are lost. There are two ways to counter this: 1) which I already edited in earlier is the Gem Collector accessory, 2)the Freelancer has a passive ability that stops gem lost if the party dies.

Main series FFs Beaten - FF: 4x, FFII: 3x, FFIII: 3x, FFIV: 3x, FFV: 3x, FFVI: 4x, FFVII: 5x, FFVIII: 5x, FFIX: 3x, FFX: 4x, FFXII: 3x, FFXIII: 2x, FFXV: 2x
The games i recommend are Nostalgia and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the DS
Maybe you like Final Fantasy III/IV (i thought they had limited fun, didn't really like III in the end), IV i recommend if you're not looking to win the game perfectly, that means winning the game 3 times and if you do one mistake, you lost.
Which i don't like but the ability system is awesome but getting them is something else.
