I was going to post in the Tactics Ogre PSP remake thread that already exists, but it was closed :/
Today I bought the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre, opportunistically, but I think it was actually released today. Lucky for me. I got the 'premium edition' (it was the only edition in the store), which is pretty rad: it comes complete with tarot cards.
I haven't started it yet, because I have a lot on. Though I was wondering if anyone else has it, and what they think of it.
Keep spoilers down, but any general tips and thoughts would be ace.
No one? Well here's a bump in case anyone is interested but doesn't have it. I can't remember the version I played, on GBA, six years ago, so I'm not sure how it compares in many respects. Alone, however, it plays like a more difficult FFT (WotL). I'm playing at a rate of one battle per day, and I've had two game overs in five battles. The enemy is very evenly matched, and the skills/equipment/magic set-up is already important.
You get a large partry very quickly, but you no longer have the problem of accumulating a bunch of party-members at a low level: levels are set according to the class they inhabit. A store-bought fighter cam be instantly incorporates into your party.
I'm not being entirely truthful in that ability points are only granted to those who fight, I think. That will become crucial, I'm sure.
I played Knight of Lodis back in the day for the gba I'm pretty sure. I've been toying with the idea back and forth about picking this up. I think it is a remake of the tactics ogre that came out in Japan back in the SNES days right? I remember romming it and thought it was pretty good.
Is there any kind of new system for challenge sake? I remember in Knights of Lodis elements were extremely annoying and you could get different endings depending on the path you led.
I haven't reallyy progressed far enough to make magic essential, although it seems a number of classes can use magic. However you require a skill slot for one element, not just magic generally. Because you can't see what you're up against at the troop selection phase, you could end up picking troops of the wrong affinities. It also means that each troop who uses magic is best off specialising in a certain element.
Something I think is innovative is this 'Chariot' system, which allows you to go back through previous turns, and try different strategies. I think it saves up to 50 moves. Again, I'm not far enough for it to be useful. Indeed, I've only exploited it. If I try attacking someone, and miss, I'll go back to the beginning of that move. It won't change the fact that I'll miss, but I can do something else, or just hit wait and get my next turn sooner.
Yeah, Knights of Lodis was the TO game on the GBA; the one recently remade for the PSP was the original SNES title in Japan in 1995 (Sega Saturn in '96, PlayStation in '97, and overseas for PlayStation in 1998).
For reference, Knights of Lodis is actually a prequel.
Also, I FRIGGEN LOVE THIS GAME AND I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THIS THREAD. Yeah, I know, I'm typically the first to rag on people for using caps lock but this was serious business.
We need to have a totally spoiler-full conversation about this game, preferably with the use of tags since there are so many branching storylines.

I considered buying the game, but with how little I play games nowadays and Pokemon it didn't seem likely that I'd be getting into it. My experience with the Ogre series begins and ends at Ogre Battle 64, which I got to the final chapter of but never quite beat. The game is pretty damn incredible, even if the system is different from that of Tactics Ogre.
I think I prefer the Ogre Battle/Ogre Battle 64 system, if only because the slowed down RTS style mixes thing up a bit more than the tried and true "move to x square and attack" system.
I'm sure it's worth buying. The setting and story are top-knotch for something that is so basic. Light years beyond FFXII or whatever. I'm just not sure I'd play it.

Anyway, I second Loco's comment. I was recently refered to this game through a bud o' mine from another forum and I finally got a copy and it's an awesome game!
I'm not far and I've not played any of the others but I really like it. I get a kick out of the training system and how you can play 2 player or throw it into computer players and go check Facebook or make a sandwitch.
So far my favorite thing about this game is the fact that you can choose so many different weapons, and have like a bow and a shortsword for CQC, I don't take advantage of it much but it's nice to know I can.
