Sonic Returns In New 2D, HD Game - Sonic - Kotaku

    Quoted from the site itself;

It appears that Sega may actually have been listening. After years and years of (mostly) awful 3D Sonic games, the company is now teasing something called "Project Needlemouse", billed as a return to the Sonic of old.

"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay" says Sega of America's Ken Balough. "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."

The teaser clip's tagline reads "Speed returns, in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up", with Balough confirming the game will, rather than be a retro-remake, be an all-new game built in HD.

It'll be out in 2010. No word on platforms, but the "HD" bit certainly narrows it down. What do you think, Sega fans? Do you dare to hope?

This has Dawezy interested, discuss. /raised with SEGA

I'll admit, when I heard this the other day, I was pretty damn excited, but I've been burned by Sonic too many times in the last little while to hold out much hope. I'll plant myself firmly in the 'cautiously optimistic' category with this one.

Here's to hoping that Sega can pull this off.

    Until now!

It sounds an awful lot like what we've already seen from Nintendo, sans the high def.

New SMB was an updated version of the 2D styled side-scrolling Mario games. Seems it took Nintendo doing something that was fairly popular to Mario fans to finally realize they'd be better off going back to old school styled Sonic.

I still don't know why companies think the 2D side scrollers are a dead genre. New Super Mario Brothers or Braid, anyone?

Games, at their heart, are supposed to be fun. More and more devs just seem to want to throw in the newest and flashiest ideas and **** off on the gameplay. Big pretty colors and explosions with a repetitive and dull gameplay and/or unresponsive controls <> fun IMO.

Hell Braid was just a small, short 2D sidescrolling pixelated platformer on a current generation system, yet it's an absolutely amazing game.

I think it's more the rabid criticism that recent Sonic games have received rather than Nintendo's example that has steered Sega onto this path. I'm still rather surprised in all honesty as newer Sonic games have always made money despite being so poorly constructed. And money is what they care about.

    Until now!

I dont know about you guys but i quite enjoyed Sonic on the Dreamcast

Not sure if 2d is gonna cut it anymore, they will have to make it super fast and crazy to pull it off if even..

I really like the sonic games and I think the 2D thing would be a good idea. There was another updated 2d sonic that sucked though. It was sonic rivals for the PSP and it really didn't look that good at all.

What about Sonic Rush for the DS...
That was a god awful game too.
If this is true, let's cross our fingers and keep waiting...
If they ditch the idea, let's at least hope they make another 3D sonic like Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast and the Dx remake for Gamecube.

At first I was like, "Built from the ground up." Nice!

    Then I was like "2d".

You've got to be kidding me. It's gonna be the same old shit we've seen before with pretty backgrounds that don't mean a ****ing thing.

Hardly. Sonic is great, well old Sonic is great, but far from Sega's best. That award is quite debatable, but I personally would bestow such a prestigious award either to the Shining Force series, Jet Grind Radio or perhaps Shenmue. There's probably some others I'd substitute or add to that list, but this is off the cuff at the moment.

    Until now!

Does anyone remember, Or actually played Toejam and Earl ?? I thought it was really funny. Me and my older brother used to play both that and Sonic on the old SEGA
it was about these two funky aliens, who were trying to get all these weird looking humans of their planet. I was watching It on You Tube the other day and remembered how you had to catch them in jars

The main theme isn't bad either , definately one of my favorites (!!!)
    Here:
    Full Opening:
YouTube - ToeJam & Earl - Full Opening Sequence

Let's play Tojam and Earl Panic on Funkotron :

    Ta DA!!!:

I'm thinking about creating a hybrid. A dolphin-monkey. Half dolphin, half monkey. Do you think it's possible?
I was thinking that since I'm artificially creating it, I'll create it with rocket fuel instead of blood, and thus it will be able to fly, using the dolphin's dorsal fins as wings. And from the air, it will look down upon us all and protect us against sharks, and search for bananas.
