Raz can beat shit out of Mario and Sonic!

Hard to believe, but there are some great platformers without Mario title on them. Like my favorite for instance, Psychonauts. This game was awarded for it's brilliant humor and design. It brought storytelling, character depth and development on completely new level, as far platformers goes that is. Levels and enemies are not nearly as generic as in other platformers, bosses are actually unique and challenging. Shame though this game was not recognized by wider audience.

Another great one I played recently was Sonic Generations. Seeing as I never played Sonic games before everything was new and exciting to me. A well done mixture of 3D and classic 2D platforming was an excellent choice, it also has a decent story with a rather nice twist at the end. Supporting characters are gameplay wise implemented perfectly, Sonic Generations can also brag with tons of extra content to unlock and memorable music.

I also have fond memories of Donky Kong Country series, though I've never beaten any of them. Daxter is also awesome, one of my first games on PsP. I think I'll have to look into Jak and Daxter series. And who can forget oldschool games such as Dangerous Dave and Commander Keen series. First Dangerous Dave was hard as ****, Commander Keen on the other hand, third game in particular could be beaten in matter of minutes.

Now for little bit of discussion, a rather cliche question, what are yours favorite platformers?

Sonic generations was a really big meh.
Not that i entirely hated the game, i actually found it quite enjoyable. Its just way to long. Playing the same level twice, even if it is in two different dimensions gets old fast. I prefer the shorter sonics like 1-4 & knuckles. There is only two sonics i can think of that actually fared well as a full game in 3D. Colors & Adventure. Well i guess sonic 3D too

Braid is probably my favorite platformer if just sticking to the specific genre.

I'm not huge into platformers, i usually only like it when an added genre is put into the mix.
Megaman & Metroid are the only games that come to mind.

Strange thing to say since it's main campaign was max 3-4 hours long, in fact, the short campaign was one of if not the main reason many reviews were complaining about. Extra stages added few hours to it if you decided to go through them, but it was a relatively short game.

okay let me rephrase, long game for a sonic game.
Like i said i like the shorter games, something i can run through in an 1/2 hour to an hour.

I have played some great platformers in my time.

My favourite will always be Sonic 2. Back in the day, and even now, the game is a hell of a lot of fun. Everthing about the game screams 'classic'. From the music, the levels, the first appearance of Tails (even if all he did was die and lose your rings in the bonus stages). Sonic definitely deserves a mention for his other games from the Mega Drive/Genesis era. Sonic went seriously downhill in his later games, with the last good one for me being Sonic Heroes.

That is until I bought Sonic Generations. I have had no end of fun in this game so far. It brings the nostalgia of the past games to the new HD era. Modern Sonic still pisses me off a little, but his gameplay has been great thus far.

Best 3D platformer goes to Crash Bandicoot for me. CB was the first game I ever had on PS, and, like Sonic, I still play it to this day. CB was such a quirky game, with even quirkier characters. The series is a good one, up until Wrath Of Cortex, and it was all downhill from there.

As for Mario, I make it no secret that I have never been a big fan of the Mario games. Although I did enjoy Mario 64. It was definitely the best of the lot.

Donkey Kong Country 1 for it's music and 2 because 2 is the best.

You all are forgetting the "Star" of the show. It's Ristar!!! This intergalactic savior has stretchy arms and saves the world. Who hasn't wanted to be a star for a day. I found this game to be quite short, but still has tons of fun. I play it now on Sega Genesis Collection.
