    PS3 stopped reading discs

Recently my friend brought Borderlands over for PS3. We put it in, and it apparently came with an update. We start updating, and it stops at 79%. Was there for quite a while, so we shut off the PS3 and were going to try it again. We start the PS3 up again and put in the disc and nothing. It won't read any discs. No Bluray, no PS3, no PS1, no DVD, no CD. Am I ****ed?

My warranty has expired as I've had the system for quite a while.

    I'm quite upset.

That's like a nightmare situation right there. Have you tried re-installing the update again? Or was this update specifically for the game only, not the system?

I've only had my PS3 for a few months so I haven't had any experiences like this. I wish I could be more help, because that seriously sucks.

I tried to reformat my PS3 (quick, and full) to see if maybe I could get the old firmware back and start fresh. It just erased all the info from my hard drive and the firmware was still the most up to date. Not quite sure what that update had from the disc, but if my PS3 can't read the disc then I can't update from it.

I'm sure you can open it up and clean the laser. At least, I'm sure there are FAQs or some equivalent out there that will show you how. Or maybe you can look up someone who knows how. >_>

I had a problem exactly like that for my ps2 when it said there was an error for every disk i put in. I bought these special disks with bristles which when you insert them clean the laser. Only worked for a few weeks though but you might have more luck.

Couldnt have happened at a worse time with uncharted 2 just out and ratctet and clank 2 around the corner.

Most of the solutions I've found are unfortunately call tech support, and likely eventually buying a new one if your warranty is void or if you don't have the receipt. But most of the people who seem to have this problem claim it was also caused by an update, although I think they were system updates in most cases.

A dirty lens is normally a progressive thing rather than an immediate one. But it could be blocked or something from the last disc you put in. I had dirty lens issues on my PS2 and I cleaned it by opening it and that made it fully functional for years. The disc cleaners I'm told have a tendency to scratch the lens rather than help it in the long run. My PS2 is starting to have problems again, but its been like 3 years since I cleaned it.

Without a warranty I don't know if Sony will do anything. I bought a store warranty from the place I got my PS3 since the products usually out last their one year warranty. I'd try to clean it before replacing it.

Hook yourself up to PSN and download the most recent version of the programing software. I am doubting a dirty lense has anything to do with this. I am not entierly sure about the lazer system but I think after a period of idle time it will shut itself off so I am doubting it has burned itself up also.

So yeah try downloading the latest software patch. If that doesn't work then I have no clue. Hell it could be a dirty lense. The PSN downloads are usually equal to or greater to what most games come packaged with.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I'm gonna try to download some stuff off PSN and if that won't work I'll just open it up and try to clean it.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'll let you know how it goes. I really don't want to have to send it in. If that's the case I'll probably just wait to get a ps3 slim for Christmas.

lol getting our info off the Wikipedia eh? In any case, Xbox is good about getting boxes back to people in a relative short time frame (2-3 weeks) if they are turned in with problems, such as the Red Ring of Death and the E-74 problems. Also, once getting the box back, Microsoft reimburses the consumer by giving them a free 1-month subscription to xbox live, which is kinda necessary but a nice gesture. Btw, RRoD and E74 is covered after the warranty expires and they are the two most common problems with the 360s.

    Just saying.

Normally, no I don't use Wiki, but as for now it was reliable information on common problems for the Xbox360 haha. I could of went almost anywhere else and found the same list. I just picked the first link I saw and it happened to be wiki. Damn me for being to lazy to actually click the back button and finding a different source.

Just thought I would poke a little fun at you heh.

Hope everything works out with your PS triple Che! Before I get back, I'll ask some people I'm going with that have ps3s and see what they say.

Supposedly it's the most common way for one's PS3 to die. I'd suggest googling it to learn what the symptoms are and to see if it matches the problems you're having. That really sucks if you've got a BC model...

Update Che, I demand an update!? Did you get it fixed and if so what did you end up having to do to get it back into shape?

Damn it man we need information!!!!!

This thread has crossed my mind a few times this week end and I am dieing to get some more information on this topic mainly because you are the first person that I know of that has had any real problems with their PS3.

Haha, sorry. Well I tried to update it and it was fully updated already. The update I need is specifically on the Borderlands disc, and I can't pop that back in and retry as we're pretty sure either the lens is fried, or somehow the update isn't fully installed and thus won't read any discs.

I e-mailed Sony about it, it'd cost me $150 to send it in to get it fixed, as my warranty is out. I've been googling the crap out of this problem and it seems as though many people are having the same issue. It seems that as of the latest firmware, Sony increased the disc speed to reduce loading times, but didn't take into account the toll that'd take on our hardware. It seems a bunch of people are having updates fail, or their lens burning out from the increased speed.

It's pretty crappy imo, because I bought it with a 1 year warranty, and now the warranty is gone, and now that it is they decide to change things so that my PS3 dies after my warranty is out, while at the same time offering me the PS3 slim. Scam?

Part of me is really really pissed about the whole issue, but part of me secretly wants this PS3 slim. I don't really want to send it into Sony, so I think I'm going to just break down and buy a new PS3 slim. I was out of hard drive space already on my 40GB, so the extra 80 from the 120GB slim will be very nice.

I also have heard that the PS3 slim is quieter than my PS3, which is good news for when I play at night (often). When that fan turns on, I have to turn my volume up a couple notches, which makes it overall kind of loud as I live in an apartment and have paper thin walls with 3 neighbors.

So basically, I took my PS3 apart, and while opening it up and realizing this is what Sony is going to do, except replace the lens part of the system, and charge me $150. And who is to say that it won't just burn out again if they use the same model lens? I'm sure it comes with a new warranty, but what a hassle. I'd rather just pay the $300 in Christmas money for the slim, have a quiter, larger HD system, and be done with it. I'm pissed at Sony, but I need my PS3 to survive.

    Sorry for the rambling~

also @Jin: nope, no yellow light of death. The PS3 works perfectly except for the fact that it doesn't read any type of disc. I can still download and play games from the PSN network, listen to the music on my hard drive, etc, but no disc action of any type.

That's the first time I've heard of that. Now I'm worried about my launch PS3 system, 60GB. I've been pretty lucky so far, only problem I've had with the recent firmware upgrade was having to delete my Uncharted save file and start fresh.

It's weird, you say this was supposed to IMPROVE load times? I swear playing Uncharted again, load times felt LONGER and more delayed to me.

I'm not sure I really buy that this is firmware related. When firmware bricks consoles, it's usually something you hear about (well you do if you frequently look at gaming news), but I haven't heard anything about this. Headlines were all over the net when the Wii's firmware bricked consoles and it was reported ad nauseum that PS3 firmware 3.0 glitched up certain games, specifically the first Uncharted, but the latest patch, as far as I heard, has since fixed that and I've yet to hear anything else on the subject. This leads me to believe either A) your problem isn't firmware related, B) It hasn't happened to that many people, C) gaming news sites are slipping or finally D) I'm slipping.

Could be any one of those.

    Until now!

I can't confirm or deny it, but I did notice that I could actually hear my PS3 running the last time I was playing, which is something I never do. It was still extremely quiet and I had to be like a foot or two to hear it, but it felt like I could feel the disc spinning. It was a strange, but I haven't really noticed any increases in loading times. But I'd have to agree that something like that causing lenses to break would be something that the media would be all over, especially with the way they like finding faults with the PS3 at times. I haven't read anything about a change in disc speed, but who really knows. I'll just keep my store warrant close by me if the thing breaks.

Who knows, I just randomly googled (weird spell check doesn't recognize "googled" as a word. this is 2009, right?) stuff and tried to find information I thought could be correct. It could be completely wrong.

I don't think it's a firmware issue. Is there a way to get the original firmware and reinstall the latest? Because I have the latest, yet it doesn't work. So what else could it have been? One option is a fried lens, which I'll know shortly. I took it to my dad since he had the tools to open the PS3 up, but I didn't know what I was doing in getting to the lens and I didn't want to break anything in case I can actually fix it. I'll know soon if that's it.

What are those updates you have to do when you get a new PS3 game? Not firmware updates are they? Whatever it tried to update, that's what got messed up. Unless the lens frying rumor really is true.

Keep your store warranty and proof of purchases!

Yeah, to play newer games that is the firmware updates. I think you can go back to scratch by formatting the HDD possibly. You'd have to do a complete wipe of everything since a normal formatting doesn't clear the firmware, at least it doesn't on PS3 test kits otherwise we'd have to do updates everyday. The other more expensive option would be to find a new laptop HDD and get the firmware on that. I'm assuming the firmware is on the HDD, but I guess if it isn't then changing the HDD won't do anything. Sorry, I'm just shooting in the dark at this point.

There is an option under system settings that restores all default settings. I'm not 100% sure that it does firmware as well, but when I used the same option for my PSP, firmware was reset too, so I'd say it's probably the case for the PS3 as well. You'll have to back everything up though. It resets EVERYTHING.

    Until now!

Figured I'd do an update for anyone that cared, because I'm excited.

My parents got me an early Christmas present, and it's a 250GB PS3 Slim! Thing is beautiful, and way quieter than the original PS3. Also got the two year warranty on it, so I'm quite pleased. I'm guaranteed two years of solid PS3ing and 2010 looks insane as far as the lineup of games coming out for it.

Congrats on the new PS3 and a 250 gig one too. You're not going to be turning that PS3 off a while once the new year hits with all of the games that are coming out.

The slim is even quieter than the original? Wow that's impressive considering the original was pretty quiet itself. I had a friend ask me if it was actually turned on because they couldn't hear it. They had a 360 so they were used to hearing their discs spinning noisily in their systems. Those things are like a jet engine compared to how quiet the PS3 is.

Glad something worked out for you, Che.

Really Andro? My PS3 is fairly quite until the fans kick in and then it is fairly obvious that something is going on with it. I generally have to turn up the volume to dumb down teh sound emiting from teh consol. Which version of the PS3 are you using. Mine is the original 60, could be why it is so noisy.

Back on topic. Grats to you Che. I hope that you don't run into this problem in the future again. Then again you are only the second person (now) that I know of that has had any problems with their PS3. Then again the audio on mine has picked up a hum. I tried swapping the cables out but it doesn't seem to of helped. Then again that could be all in my head.

^ This exactly. The slim doesn't do that for me. I dunno, I like to keep my volume low usually since I live in an apartment so it's probably more noticeable if you play with it cranked to 11 usually.

And thanks for the support. Just don't EVER turn off your PS3 during an update. That's gotta be what ****ed mine up.

My PS3 is one of the non-backwards compatible PS3s. It is an original "fat" PS3, but that is about it. I've run a lot of test kit PS3s both original 4 USB run PS2 as well PS3 and the new 2 USB don't run PS2 PS3s. And neither sounded louder than the other and test kits are pretty much I identical to retail versions. But I don't know, I just know that mines been very quiet and only recently, I think with a new update or something someone was talking about that increase disc speed have I actually begun to hear anything noticeable from it.

Powering down during an update huh? I can imagine that causing problems and they do usually say not to do mess with the PS3 when its downloading or installing. But I'd think that they would test something like that to know what would happen. Though I guess the don't power off the kit while this is occurring sort of safe guards them from accidents huh? ^^; Well it's all water under the bridge now with your shiny new PS3 slim.
Curious? There's no limits but your own imagination.

My original PS3 was very quiet. It had that "hum" like a computer would, but not as loud. But when I opened a game and really made it think, it would go insane. Every so often while playing movies it would do it too, and I hate having to change the volume while you're watching a movie. I get really into movies, or try to, and turn out all the lights and put my surround on.

Anyway, I love my new PS3. Haven't had any problems yet, I will never turn it off during an update again (even if it seems like it's frozen), and that's that.

    Cheers!

Glad your situation got resolved. I've got one of the older PS3s as well, frigging HATE the long load times and updates.

Although Rocky freaking SLAYED me with his Xbox.com stuff. I was going to suggest it myself but he beat me to it! It IS fun to stir the pot with all you PS Fanboi's. :

In all seriousness though, I'm really glad that Sony offered you a new PS3. That was a class act. I would've been super pissed if I spent that amount of money and then got a "Sorry 'bout yer luck" message back from them. At least they are standing behind their products!!
