    PS3 Slim Confirmed

The slim will come with a 120GB drive, and will be 33% smaller and 36% lighter than the standard PlayStation 3, as well as using 34% less power. The $300 price will apply to all PlayStation 3s starting tomorrow. The Slim will be available everywhere by the first week of September.
Still unsure about how many USB ports and if there are any other changes to be noted. Pictures below.

And the other thing? It will be 300$ and the regular PS3 will be reduced to that price as well. (Says my boyfriend who works at Gamestop.)

    So, if the regular PS3 gets dropped to the same price....what's the point of even making a slim? >.>;

(Ahh..Phasing them out. I get it...)

I watched the IGN video of them unwrapping it out of a box. It has two ports and all of the same features as the original it just comes with a standard 120gb HDD this time. It also had switch/buttons or whatever you want to call them for the eject and power rather than the tactile contact ones that required heat (i.e. body heat from the finger) to use. So now the undead can play the PS3 as well. >.>

And there was concern about changing the HDD, but Sony and IGN confirmed that you can change out the HDD it is just located in a different place. The only real feature change is that you can't load Linux on it anymore, they removed the upload different OS option. Which I didn't know you could do, but I guess if you want to turn them into a farm for a super computer you'll want the original PS3 and not the Slims. But the originals are getting phased out like the original PS2 were when the Slims came out. And just like the Slims it looks very much like its larger version and comes with a plate to allow it to stand up if you want to do that.

Oh and the power is still inside the PS3, so you don't have to worry about the brick like the 360 or PS2 slim. Though it does look like it is using the old power cable the PS2 originals used rather than the universal ones that the PS3 original uses.

It still has HDMI, Wifi, Bluetooth, and all of the other standard connectivity and input/output. And you apparently get a bonus if you own a Bravia in that the PS3 and the TV will work together and you can use the XMB and PS3 with the TV or something like that. They said that if you turn off your TV the PS3 will power off too, which will probably be fine until your roommate decides to be funny and turn off your TV on you and you lose your game progress. Then you kill your roommate and sit on his corpse and return your PS3. >.> *cough*

Anyway, looks pretty good all things said. And with the $300 price tag people will start picking them up. Though I was sort of thinking that they'd really want to say screw you Microsoft and retail it at $200. But it'll drop in time. It just a little weird to think that its the price of the PS2 back in the day when I got one.

I thought the PS3 power cable was the same as the old PS2 one? Or at least I'm pretty sure you can use the PS2 one on the PS3.

The PS3/TV power off thing sounds cool but it's not really a huge deal for my setup. And although it looks sleeker, I don't really see too much of mine as it's packed neatly back in my entertainment setup.

Nope, I've unplugged enough PS3s at work that I'm pretty familiar. The same cable you plug into your PC desktop and some monitors is used for the original PS3s. So they are all interchangable, it was pretty neat. The original PS2 used a different cable and the PS2 slim used a power adapter type cable (I don't know the names for any of them). But yeah, I'm certain they were all different. So it might mean that the PS2 original and the PS3 slim cables are interchangable. I'm not sure if you'd want to try it, but it was just something that I noticed in the video.

I'm glad the price is lower now. I bought an 80gb for $400 and that's a pretty decent value, but I've felt like the price should have been lower with so many features having been stripped out over the course of these few years. I think I prefer the older design though, even if "Piano Black" describes more than just the color. When I first saw this one I was reminded of a bathroom scale.

I'm glad we're finally at last gen launch prices though.

I used to work at a video game company test their games. I moved equipment around a lot and things. So I'm pretty familiar with the PS3 and 360 consoles. More familiar with the 360 than I'd like, but can't complain about a paying job.

The thing that always got me was way there was a $100 difference between consoles when it was just a HDD change after a while. I doubt that the HDD was $100 more even being a laptop HDD. I'd almost think that Sony could have pulled out the HDD and then sold their brand of laptop HDD or something. And allowed people to pick their size and cost. *shrugs* But then you'd have people that would just march out of the store with a console forgetting their HDD. I would have preferred it though, because the console probably could have been even cheaper and then the customer could pick for like a 30 or 50 dollar different HDD sizes to pop with already pre-install with the latest firmware.

Oh well, we leave in a world of plug and play and screwing in a HDD to the side port is not plug and play.

Yeah, I was sort of perplexed by the lack of difference between the 80gb and 160gb last year. I didn't understand the point in paying $100 for 80 gigs more. It's certainly better than what Microsoft's doing with the 360 since the option to upgrade without buying their own product is available, which would actually be cheaper than paying an extra $100, but putting the 160gb model out when it didn't even feature a few extra USB ports felt like a bit of a waste. This gen's been all about releasing different specs even when people don't need them.

Yeah, it's more effective just to get the cheapest PS3 and buy a laptop HDD and drop that in. Sony even has a site that explains what you need to do to switch out HDD. So you can plop in a 500gb and be cruising for years unless they start going heavy on the digital download for PS3 games. But personally, I don't want to download FFXIII to my HDD. The game probably using the entire disc.

The funny thing is that there is already rumors of a 250gb PS3 Slim now. So apparently they might go with the two size model again when I don't know why. Hopefully, its only a $50 dollar jump or a bundle deal so you're getting the money out of it.

    ...o_O By what? I'm a little confused what I said that was gross. Was it all the nerd talk? ^^;

But honestly, Sony should just stick with one console and keep things simple for people. I think the larger HDD is their way to make a little extra cash or break even on a console that they are losing money on. They should just focus on getting as much PS3 out as possible to get the install base up. When the install base gets up people will hopefully stop jumping ship or playing balancing games. Though balancing is better than nothing.

I want my Last Remnant SE. ; ; You promised me a PS3 version.

I've been saving up for a PS3 for a while now so this is good news. I'm just torn between getting a PS3 which will drop in price here (uk) or saving longer and getting the slim. What would you guys suggest?

They will pretty much be the same system. So if you want to get the PS3 now because there's some games you want to play get it now. If not a cooler, smaller and lighter PS3 will there soon. The only question mark is that the PS3 Slims haven't been mass tested yet. There may be an unknown problem with them like the earlier PS2 slims had with overheating. Who knows all things said Sony's got a better records with the PS3 than Microsoft does on the 360 with their +50% failure rate that was reported this week to Sony's 10%.

Milkpea, I think it really comes down to whether or not you like the design and how much a 40gb difference matters to you. They'll be coming out in early September according to what Che posted, so you're not waiting very long.

Was it the 80gb that was recently price dropped? Or did the 160gb drop as well? Or was that phased out?

Let us pray that we never need read another PS3 Slim rumour or see another grainy, leaked photo of it ever again.

And there was much rejoicing. Until people find something else to bitch about.

S the 80 and 160 both got a price cut of a $100 each and they are both being phased out in favor of the slim. And yeah Jin we are probably safe from anymore of the PS3 slim leaks, but there will probably be a PSP2 leak in another year or two or something to get us all excite again. Sony seems to do a bad job keeping secrets or perhaps they do this on purpose as a marketing plan. Who knows.

We don't even have to wait for the PSP2. We've already got the PS2 emulator patent to speculate about while Sony says "no comment" in 50 different languages until they're ready.

PSP2. PS4. It sounds like a few people are ready to move on to the next-gen. With the number of iterations of the same console over the relatively short life of this gen thus far, I wouldn't be surprised. But God, I hope not. At least 4 more years, please. I don't think my wallet can take anymore of this.

When Sony tried to prevent leaks, people got pissed. Now when Sony doesn't, people laugh at them. I think after all the bad press they have taken, regardless of who's fault it was, they've just decided to bend over and take what comes their way.

We won't be seeing a PS4 for a while now I don't think. The only difference possibly coming to the consoles in the near future will be built in motion control technology and possibly slightly upgraded models with better cards and what have you. Both first and third party publishers seem apt to make this the longest console generation yet. Frankly, I agree with them.

    Until now!

Aw, man. This reminded me that people have 4 ports on their PS3 while I don't. I like to plug in my 40gig USB drive to play video and music on my PS3, and I plug in my USB ipod chord to charge my iphone sometimes. Also, USB mouse and keyboard take up slots so I have to keep rearranging whats in the ports. This would be so convenient.

And please, no PS4 for 4+ years. I don't even want to think about it.

It does look a little better...but my question is, is it faster??? installing games is a bitch. I figured they would make an updated PS3 that is smaller and faster..like they do with everything else, haha.

  29. #29
So, are their any differences in specs?

Either way, it looks good, but I won't be needing one, still have my original launch PS3.
