    a ps3 question

I decided to get a ps3 for xmas, because they're dropping in price with the next gen consoles being released. And because I don't really follow what comes out on a console unless I own that particular one, I just wanted to ask you guys about a couple of games that I was thinking of getting.

After looking through EB Games for about half an hour I found Skyrim and White Knight Chronicles. Obviously everyone who's been on the internet over the past few years has heard about Skyrim, my main problem with these is that i'm not much of an online gamer, I pretty much only play single/local multiplayer games. So do these games have a good enough single player story/gameplay to warrent getting, or are they better suited to online playing? Was there anything that you found good or bad?

Also are there any other ps3 rpg's out there that you can recommend getting, becuase i'm not joking when I say I'm hopeless with other consols and technology. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated

Skyrim isn't even an online game. All single player.
For Our Lord Sheogorath, without Whom all Thought would be linear and all Feeling would be fleeting. Blessed are the Madmen, for they hold the keys to secret knowledge. Blessed are the Phobic, always wary of that which would do them harm. Blessed are the Obsessed, for their courses are clear. Blessed are the Addicts, may they quench the thirst that never ebbs. Blessed are the Murderous, for they have found beauty in the grotesque. Blessed are the Firelovers, for their hearts are always warm. Blessed are the Artists, for in their hands the impossible is made real. Blessed are the Musicians, for in their ears they hear the music of the soul. Blessed are the Sleepless, as they bask in wakeful dreaming. Blessed are the Paranoid, ever-watchful for our enemies. Blessed are the Visionaries, for their eyes see what might be. Blessed are the Painlovers, for in their suffering, we grow stronger. Blessed is the Madgod, who tricks us when we are foolish, punishes us when we are wrong, tortures us when we are unmindful, and loves us in our imperfection.

As Heartless Angel said, Skyrim is a single-player game, and you should think of getting Oblivion as well. Other games you could consider getting would be Fallout 3 and/or Fallout: New Vegas, if you are into the whole post-apocalyptic theme. And definitely Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. It's so good! And then there's Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (when it becomes available).

I have also heard great things from people who play the Tales of series (Graces f, Xillia, etc.). I like the theme song from Graces f, because it was sung Korean idol singer BoA.

Yeah I recommend both tales of graces f and xillia. Both of those games are supposed to be really good. I also recommend FFXIII if you want to catch up to the latest FF titles. If you need any other rpg recommendations, I highly suggest consulting Andromeda.

You must get Skyrim! Its the best single player RPG ive played in a long ass time.

The music and graphics are epic and the content and world is massive. id advise getting the game with all the extra content if you can, not sure how its dished out on PS though..

And example of the great music to wet your ears

    a ps3 question

Is Skyrim still epically buggy on the PS3?

    The Elder Scrolls (Skyrim, Oblivion)
    Fallout series
Im not sure how into FPS/TPS, but I'd highly recommend Uncharted and The Last of Us (great single player stories)
There are some great HD remasters like Ico/Shadow of the Colossus and Kingdom Hearts Remix 1.5
RPGs Ni No Kuni and FFXIII

I was pretty disappointed in The White Knight Chronicles. Nothing really grasped me, story was eh, gameplay was eh.

The safe bets have already been mentioned for RPGs on the PS3. You're sure to get a great experience from the Tales games and Ni No Kuni, FFXIII and FFXIII-2 are good as well, though they're going to be polarizing depending on the individual. If you missed out on KH, it is available as 1.5 HD with Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days. The lesser known RPGs are going to be more hit or miss depending on your taste. There is Disgaea 3, 4 and D2 available if you're up for Tactics style RPGs. Dragon's Crown is a great side scroller RPG. I would highly suggest the Atelier series, but they are going to be a different pace from what many are used. Atelier Ayesha is a good beginner game for new players to the series, but Atelier Totori is the best for story and Atelier Meruru is the best refinement, though Ayesha has the best combat until Escha and Logy comes out next year. Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is the best of the series for entertainment and combat. Demon's Souls or Dark Souls are great games if you don't mind the challenge they present. Resonance of Fate is a really fun game with an interesting combat system, the main story tends to lag until late game, but the character story is interesting. Star Ocean 4 is available if you're want your next Star Ocean experience.

And because it deserves a separate note for it, Valkyria Chronicles is one of the must play games on the PS3. It is sorely under looked, but a beautiful game to watch and just as enjoyable to play. Find a copy and play it.

If you want more choices let me know, I've played most of the RPGs on the PS3 and own all of the JRPGs on it.

Personally, I hated Fallout Vegas, but loved 3. I also loved Skyrim and played a good chunk of Oblivion. I'm playing The Last of Us and love it, and plan on picking up the Uncharted Series, as well as Heavy Rain. My great plan is to stock up on the PS3 only games, since I've played a good deal of the multiplatform games on my 360. I picked up a PS3 last week since I wanna see how the console wars pan out before I commit to a system.

I recommend looking for deals on amazon during cyber monday. You can just pick up a bunch of $20US games for like $10 or something crazy

Probably good advice, but doesn't exist here so not good for Kurt. (Would need to import PAL region games... so maybe it does exist in Europe, IDK).

I recommend Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.

And GTAIV and especially GTAV if you're into that. They're probably my favourite games on the PS3.

Oh, and Bioshock! They're selling the first two really cheap now if there's a JB HiFi near you (Kurt), for second hand you'd be unlucky to have to spend more than $20 to get both.

Well, I dunno about Aus, but you can get a Bioshock 1 and 2 (with all DLC) pack for about 20 US, which I highly recommend.

Mass Effect has a trilogy pack out, which I also recommend.

Borderands 1 and 2, as well as the Assassins Creed series

Thanks for the reccomendations guys, you've all helped out a lot. EB Games and JB-Hifi are having pretty big sales up until around xmas, so there's no doubt i'll be buying out their ps3 sections

Skyrim is definatly on the list, I was just wodering if it's worth paying extra for the Legendary Collection. From what i've read it fixes a few of the bugs in the game, and has those three expansions. Are they included on the disk or are they downloadable content only? So far nothing I haven't found anything that confirms that.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition looks pretty good too, a review I read describes it as 'nipple rippingly difficult' which is probably one the best line ever spoken about a game. I might have to ease into that genre a bit more before I tackle it though.

Oh and Dragon Age and Dragon's Dogma are meant to be quite rough around the ages, but still decent rpg's, would anyone recommend them?

    Cheers in advance

I would definitely get the Legendary edition of Skyrim. It has a ton of bug fixes, which will also be loaded up in typical free game patches, but it also included the three DLC's, which are all pretty solid. From what I've read, the content is on a second disc, so you might just have to run the second disc to download the DLCs onto your harddrive. Plus, you won't have to shell out extra cash for the game, since it's all already there. If you pay to download them, it's freakin expensive. I think I shelled out like $40US, which is steep, buy you absolutely get your money's worth. Be warned though, that game will consume your soul (and time) without you realizing it. It cost me a relationship, but the girl was kinda shitty to begin with, which makes it even more awesome.

As for Dragon Age and Dragons Dogma, I highly recommend Dragon Age Origins, the Game of the Year, or complete edition with all the DLC's if possible. Dragon Age was done by the same people as Mass Effect, so I suggest playing ME1 and seeing how you like it before DA. Dragon Age 2 is largely meh.

Dragon's Dogma was on paper, for me, a great idea. However, it drove me absolutely insane that there was no means of fast travel from one point to another. You'd have to venture quite a ways, almost always through the same territory, fighting the same enemies in the same spots, as they'd regenerate, kill a guy, find an item, or something, then have to trek back through the same areas to deliver the item, only to have to go through ALLLL the land you went through to do the same thing. Apparently they added a limited means of fast travel in a DLC, but it wasn't worth the money to buy it. People seem to love the game though, but it was a giant pain in the ass to me.

The pawn system is pretty badass though. In the game, you get to make your own permanent assistant, or pawn, and you can travel with two additional, interchangable ones, either NPCs or another real life gamers created pawn. You can't control them, but you can pick them based on their class, weapons and skills their owner has picked for them. And people can use your pawn in the same manner. Depending on their level, players can pay you a small fee of gold to rent your pawn at whatever their current level is, and they can provide you with items if they're a good guy or found your pawn useful. It's a really cool system, just a shame that the game was mostly going from A to B, then to Z, through all of the previous points.

I haven't completed Dragon's Dogma yet, but what I played of it. It felt like Capcom's attempt at making Skyrim, or at least an Elder Scrolls game. It was open world and they wanted you to have the whole feel of go wherever and there being too much to do to get you distracted. There was some interesting ideas they have with combat and fighting creatures larger than you. It seemed pretty fun, just haven't been back to it.

Dragon Age is a completely different sort of game from Dragon's Dogma. Dragon Age is another Bioware game. Personal opinion of mine will tell you steer clear of any Bioware games, but objectively speaking. It is more of a HUB based game where you pick locations on a map to travel to and fight story quests or random quests. You choose replies in conversations that will sometimes alter your current party's opinion of you for good or bad. The game has it's fair number of problems and a ton of visual bugs, one of the few games that I've played that's actually pulled me out of the experience to look for bugs. Combat is fairly enjoyable, but it can be a little slow depending on your taste. But if you've played Mass Effect and are expecting the same sort of experience you're not going to find it. Story-wise, all three Mass Effect games connect together, the same does not happen with the Dragon Age games. Your progress and choices in the first game are meaningless in the second game and while the third is not out yet, it's pretty clear it is holding true for the third that the first and second games do not impact the third. Bioware wants a specific story, so expect to be guided towards it.

Oh I haven't played the Mass Effect series, my issues with Bioware are a little different than most other people's complaints. My experience with them was Dragon Age 1 and 2. If you want more details about my problems with them you can ask me in a different venue, I don't want to create a tangent here. Especially since my personal opinion, shouldn't push someone away from playing the games if they want the sort of that games they are.

I would highly recommend any game that Bioware puts out. I found every game from them that I've played to be a very fresh deviation from Jrpgs, which all feel very stale and the same to me.

and rocky I absolutely should work for them! at some point I'll post a picture of my vault boy riding the a-bomb t shirt. you can bet your ass its magical

Dragon Age Origins and Skyrim while both superb are not the kind of games I would play on a console, due to controls, though mostly you miss out on probably the best mod community out there. Mass Effect on the other hand, now that, I see. Mass Effect happens to be one of the most exciting video game series I ever played, the first one being my favorite. It managed to create quite a rich and fascinating lore in such a short time, thus huge recommendation. I'm not quite sure if you can find the first one outside the trilogy pack as it was an XBox 360/PC exclusive, though the trilogy pack is rather cheap for what it offers.

As someone who bought PS3 recently I found out that PS3 does not have many appealing RPG's, unless you're into generic JRPG's, there are tons of them. I know it's not an RPG but seeing as you are a MGS fan just buy MGS 4: Guns of Patriots, one hell of a game.
