Seeing I can't find digital community anymore I am posting this here. My phones acting a fool too.
The last 3 times I have fired up my PS3 I have been having a problem. I am currently playing inFamous II. I will get into a mission and achieve a goal and when it normally moves on to the next scene it doesn't. If I die the game will go to the inFamous loading screne and stick there.
Upon firing back up the system it won't read the disc. No option comes up. Fan is running a lot during the time of trouble. Could be over heating.
My son was playing earlier (cars maternational) and he was in a race and the TV started making a noise and after he finished the race the game locked up. Again resetting had the same result.
Thinking over heating condition but not sure. After leaving it off for 30 minutes it will fire back up and the game works fine until it does it again. Dvds work just fine and I can watch them back to back.

So I have tried everything outside of a complete wipe of the system via formating the hard drive. Nothing seems to help. Now the system will not even recognize a game. The reading disc signal keeps spinning but no actual load. Tried a few different ps3 games with the same result. DVDs work just fine. This is rediculous.

Thinking about resorting to a system repair place here in town but am willing to take a few more ideas prior to doing that.
Edit: just made myself sick. Wiped the harddrive hoping it would fix the error. It did not. All gaming data down the drain in hopes it would fix it. So pissed right now as I look at the spinning little reading circle spinning. ****!

Sounds like the problem I had with my original PS2. It reached a point that it stopped reading games except for for PSone games and a few PS2 games. I realized that it was still able to read CDs, just not DVDs, yes some early PS2 games were actually on CDs. So what might be happening for you is the Blu-ray reading part of the PS3 is broken while the DVD part is still fine. It could also be a lens issue, I don't know how CD, DVD and Blu-ray differ on lens reading, but I'm guessing Blu-ray requires more fine precision than the others. So the lens could just be dirty.
Curious? There's no limits but your own imagination.

What Andro said is likely accurate. Could be the disc drive beginning to burn itself out. Early generation blu-ray drives are not anywhere near as stable as the newer ones. Just like the PS2s would stop reading either CDs or DVDs (as in, read one fine and ignore the other entirely), it's plausible that your blu-ray drive in your PS3 has done the same. Unfortunately, it's the newer format that it's decided to quit reading. D:
