Well the anime takes place ten years after the events of the game Persona 3. The beginning of Persona 3 is the beginning of the story, though it would be correct to say that there are things that happened before that you'll eventually learn about. But they are just the causes and whatnot. Persona 3 is a stand alone title, so you don't have to worry about having played Persona 1 or 2 or not to understand the game.
I haven't seen the anime yet, so I don't know how much different the anime is from the game. But I know that at least one character from the game has a part in the anime. So there should be a familiar face for you.

I made the mistake of buying Persona 3 and 4 both at the same time, at a time when my overall time playing on my PS2 was dwindling. So naturally I played 4 and hardly touched 3 due to time constraints. Still Persona 5 is one of my most anticipated games.
I have already played Digital Devil Saga 2 which was a decent game. Had no idea an anime existed. Regardless of how confused or stuck you get I recommend you persevere, if 3 is anywhere near as good as 4 it will be well worth it.

Persona 3 is definitely a great game and the only reason it is not nearly as good as Persona 4 is you can only control one character in Persona 3 while you can control everyone in Persona 4. They do make some other improvements to the game that I liked, but overall they are both very solid games.

i hope ^__^Persona 3 is definitely a great game
ill give the game ahard try and ill post back if i hanged on somthing thanx
P3P, the PSP version of P3 is definitely not a shortened version of P3 on the PS2. The major difference between the two versions is that P3P allows you to pick between a male or female protagonist, that is the major difference. I think they limit the exploration in the town you can do to menu clicking, but that I'm not certain about.
I do believe that the Dark Hour does not exist in Trinity Soul or at least in the same respect as it does in the game. The best thing to do is treat the game as being separate and different from the anime. They do take place in the same timeline and one is after the other. But I wouldn't really consider the two being linked too strongly.
As for the guy in the Dark Hour room, are you referring to the kid or the old man with the long nose?

the old man
and i got puzzeled when the kid appeared and said that the end is near what end ??
in the anime the end was when someone pass 20 or so they lose the power to summon personas is that what the kid means
Totally unrelated end. As I said before it'll be best to separate the two out. And you're supposed to be confused in the beginning. The kid won't make a lot of sense for a while.
As for the old man, he's just someone that is a bit of an observer. He provides you with some services throughout the game and points you in a direction and then let you do the rest of the work yourself.
The further you get into the game the more things will make sense to you. Just try not to think too much about the anime, since things are quite a bit different I think.
