The OUYA, an android based game console

Anyone seen this yet? OUYA: A New Kind of Video Game Console by OUYA — Kickstarter

The developer behind this console is developing a console thats powered by android and is getting quite the backup from other sources. Its supposed to provide HD gaming and its supposed to have free to play games, it will also provide a dev kit so anyone can create their own games on it, you can also watch twitch.tv.

And the big thing about the console that would be related to this forum at all is the fact, they will be getting Final Fantasy III on that system.

What are your thoughts on this OUYA system? I, myself, see some pretty good potential in the system, as long as the developers are able to pull off what they state about the console.

Stickin' it to the man.. About time someone came to the table forcing the competition to rethink their own limitations and boundaries. Brilliant how they went with the philosophy of "hacking your console does not void your warranty." We can now have modding figure-heads come out of the shadows without scrutiny and possibly market some next-level-sh*t.
Thanks for spreading the word and enlightening us to this. 3 days left for donations ya'll!

Re: The OUYA, an android based game console

Hmm at first this sounded like a pretty stupid idea, but after doing some research on it they bring up a lot of valid points, such as roadblocks to developing games and how the whole thing has become overpriced. The problem is, people are fed up with the gaming industry as it is. The media is no longer worth what the industries charge for it. People have finally started waking up and taking their money elsewhere. The movie, music, games, and even cable industries are all collapsing because their money-grubbing tactics aren't working anymore.

The downfall I see with this is that an open environment is a double-edged sword. People can talk crap about Apple's closed environment all day but it clearly works for their target audience. The customers want something that just works. They don't want to have to root their device to get features or go to shady places to get some supposedly cool app. It is all contained in a nice, pretty, safe zone. If they buy a new device all their apps and music come along with it. But, the key point I am bringing out of this is the ability to bring the "rights" you already bought along with you to other devices. Other closed systems fail at this. Only the early PS3s allowed you to play PS2 games on it. People have collections of games that are now unplayable(through legal means). This is stupid.

So basically, what I think will sink or float this project is whether they take full advantage of the Android platform. If I buy software for my Android phone, it better damn well work on the console and vice versa. Secondly, how upgrade-able it is. Let's say they stick Jelly Bean on it. When whatever comes after that comes out, will the console use that? How long until the console gets it? Three months? A year? Never? That is the big stink behind Android phones right now. All this talk about being open but in reality most of them cannot even be upgraded due to limitations with the carrier or the manufacturer. I wish them the best of luck with this, but I have some serious concerns on if they can pull it off. I think I've covered the big ones.

I hope they can pull it off Merlin, because I've paid for one. Kickstarter. I commend them for trying something new and if it doesn't work out it doesn't work out - innovation is the missing piece to the global media puzzle.

First time hearing about this; I'm actually really intrigued by it and it looks amazing for just casual gaming. I'm pretty sure most will still buy a major brand console and this, If this project does indeed take off like they're promising, maybe even have some of the big companies think about bringing down the prices of games and consoles. . . . hah.

Hate the name though, it's pretty dumb.
