JRPG News Post Mugen Souls prepares for an Overwhelming release next week

Mugen Souls, a game from Compile Hearts, a PS3 exclusive that NISA is localizing and publishing for the NA and EU territories. Those lucky enough to be in the EU region already can pick up the game, but the NA region will not have to wait for much longer. Mugen Souls is coming out next week on October 16th.

The notable thing about Mugen Souls is that they got the character designer from Disgaea to do the character designs for Mugen Souls. So anyone that loves Disgaea will see immediate similarities just from a visual standpoint alone. But the similarities do not end there. Mugen Souls has Disgaea's same penchant for over the top attack moves accompanied by damage numbers that break a billion.

Those that played Neptunia Mk2 should see some familiarity with way the battles handle as you are able to move around the field on your turn. So it is not a turn based gird system like tactics games such as Disgaea. But it will feature an item world like Disgaea. It also will have lots of stats to buy up and play with for those wanting to make broken characters. Additionally, there is a customization system for modifying equipment and appearances.

The main character for the game is special and unique. Chou-chou, is the self-proclaimed Goddess of the universe, her default personality is egotistical. However, she has several other personalities that all have their own appearance and behaviors. There is a tsundere, but NISA did the odd thing of changing it to bipolar. The tsundere personality comes complete with twin tails and a zettai ryouiki grade S (almost).

Between parodying RPG tropes in general, having special attacks called "Moe Kills", Disgaea art style, lots of stats crunching and a general case of zany fun, anyone looking for some light fun should keep an eye for it.

An additional note of trivia about the game:

For those not following the game, Mugen Souls has a bit of a history to the game when NISA picked it up. When they started talking about the game they revealed that they would be cutting out some content from the game. The said content was a mini-game similar in ways to one found in Record of Agarest War 2, it was a bath mini-game. This would not have been so bad if not for the appearances of the characters. So the mini-game was cut and all related CGs were removed as well. But everything else about the game remains intact.

We may be part of the small handful here actually following the game. =P

It somehow slipped my mind when I read it on my Prinny Bomb subscription--along with the Neptunia mk2, Legasista, and Witch news. When I finally decided to watch a trailer, I was instantly hooked.

    Been counting down days. Haha.

Character and weapon customization and Ryuto have gotten me the most psyched. I pre-ordered from the NISA store, so I should be getting it Tuesday instead of Wednesday. I can't wait!

This is probably true. I grab a range of JRPGs in terms public awareness and degree of niche, this one is probably on the higher end of being a niche title. Still it looks like it is going to be a lot of fun. I've actually be following the NISA forums, so I've reading the drama over the game. I don't know if you've followed their forums, but they have fan comics that are pretty entertaining.

The store I get all my games from should be getting it next week, but it might be Tuesday or Thursday, who really knows.

Haha, yeah, I've seen several of those funny fan comics. They actually make me even more excited. I saw Chou-Chou's seven (I think) forms scene in Japanese, and even though I didn't get a word, I still found it hilarious.

I have a thing for these sorts of NIS (developed/published) games. And especially Compile Heart. Compile Heart has always entertained me. Something tells me the scenes will have me rewatching on YouTube like I do for Hyperdimension Neptunia.

Oh, and I didn't know about the item world aspect. I'm not too sure how to feel. I love the insane stats you could get for your items in Disgaea, but the process of getting there... Not really focused on skills as much as time. Hours of mindlessly repeating the same actions. Such a pain. I'll do some research on Mugen Souls's system.

Yeah, as I understand it, the item world thing is not the full deal like you would expect from Disgaea. There's some differences about it, I've only read about it so I don't know how it actually functions.

Compiles Hearts does do entertaining games, it is one of the reasons I enjoy playing their games. They are always trying to have fun, which is a nice break from all of the serious games.

I've been reluctant to play it due to be part of the no censorship crowd though from the videos I've seen so far it looks interesting enough. My backlog is too big at the moment.

The game is a lot of fun. If you enjoy a lot of what Disgaea offers then you'll enjoy Mugen Souls. There is tons of post-game content to mess around with and challenges to overcome. I'm not really a fan of the fact something was cut from the game, but it doesn't change the gameplay any. The gameplay part of what was cut is still present, it is only the visual part that was cut. And considering it was a mini-game where you scrub down characters that easily pass for underage, I can understand NISA being uneasy about letting through.

Ah Disgaea is another franchise I've been meaning to play but I am fussy and have to play things in order so it might be a while before I get around to it. I might give it a try some day when I've gotten a bit through my backlog. I've seen a few videos and it looks enjoyable.
