MGS: Your opinion -Platinum Kurt Zisa Edition

I bought Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Directors Edition (or something close to that, it came with a DVD) second hand from EB Games the other day. $18 is pretty damn cheap over here too, I might add.

This is my first one and I won't deny that i'm a complete newb when it comes to MGS, so I thought i'd ask you guys about your opinion on the series. It's going to be a few more days before I actually get to try it out, so would you consider this particular one to be a good game? Any other games I should play before or after this one? Are there any other titles in the series that have stood out to you? Games to avoid, etc. Really, if there's anything you'd like to add about your experiences with Metal Gear, feel free to say. No spoilers to anyone else who is interested in getting into this series would be great too, I guess.

You bought the worst one in my opinion, it's still a good game (great gameplay and music) just way too bizarre even for Metal Gear standards, also, Raiden's not quite as good as Solid Snake.

The entire series is great, mind you I still have to play Snake Eater and Guns of Patriots. I wont say it revolutionized the entire stealth genre, but it certainly made it a lot more popular. Each game has something unique to it, I like the fact that it can make you both cry and laugh your ass off.

My favorite by far is Metal Gear Solid on PSOne, brilliant game with great characters and story, even better gameplay, battle with Psycho Mantis has to be the best boss battle ever. Peace Walker would be my close second, it's much more than polished version of Portable Ops, best portable experience I ever had.

Re: MGS: Your opinion -Platinum Kurt Zisa Edition

My favorite metal gear would have to be Metal Gear Solid for PS1 like Xanatos. The whole series is great. The story plays out like as if it was a movie. Sneaking past guards to get to the next area is a great style of play and the music is wonderful as well.

If you want to experience all the games in the series, check out metal gear solid 3 subsistence which comes with metal gear solid 3 (disc 1) and the 2nd disc has the first 2 metal gear games that originated on MSX. Metal Gear Solid 4 was a great one too but the cutscenes are really long, thats the only downside.

If you have a PS3 or 360, definitely check out the HD collection of Metal Gear Solid. If you have a gamecube, The Twin Snakes is a great remake of the original PS1 game and adds MG2 style gameplay to the game.

Yeah get MGS1, it truely is one of the legend games. I still have the poster on my wall i got with the CE pack back when the game was released. Thee most enjoyable espionage game in existence IMO.

So defo go with MGS1 above all else before hitting 2, i liked 2. I never finished 3 or 4, the camera angles in part 3 were just so horrible i couldnt enjoy the game, just felt sloppy. Same with 4.. But you may enjoy them, frankly i blame most of my dislike for 3 and 4 on my progressing lack of drive to play single player games.

I may go back over them in the future, its a great progressing story and i wanna see it to the end.

The Metal Gear series is one of the best videogame series EVER created, originally it was 2nd to Final Fantasy in my books, but the way FF is now, its now a solid (haha..) first. I played Metal Gear Solid when i was a lot younger but i remember I rage quit cause I sucked (..Olga >>). I decided to try MGS2: Sons of Liberty next confident I was gonna quit again but ended up finishing it..thought it was easy on normal so tried it on hard mode..it was challenging but I loved the game so much I was determined to get through it all, although as a side note I like to point out MGS2 was heavily cut prior to release because of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The series to me has always been a bit different than most video games because of its emphasis on stealth and intelligence, rather than shitty “run-and-gun” action. For this reason, the Metal Gear games are usually referred to as “tactical espionage action,” a term coined by (The Man) Kojima-san himself. Its a series definitely worth getting into. The overall plot line can get quite convoluted, theres a lot of social political commentary about the state of the military world and the effects of rapidly growing technology (which I personally love).

I just finished MGS3: Snake Eater today and I have to say its my favourite in the entire series so far. I teared up a lil after the final 'Boss' battle without giving too much away. Im yet to play MGS3: Subsistence (an expanded release of Snake Eater but I intend to play still), Portable Ops, Peace Walker and MGS4:Guns Of The Patriots. Im just wating on Metal Gear Rising:Revengeance, a spinoff I guess, with Raiden whose main weapon is a blade (Swords are always my preferred weapon in battle) plus they announced just yesterday a new MGS game- MGS:Ground Zeroes with an open world!! Runs on the new fox engine, so better graphics, man they can do it in MGS2 graphics I don't care but the mgs series are known for a lot of cutscenes so thats good news, Ive always thought there was a perfect balance between that and awesome gameplay but watevs..Oh and they announced a MGS movie as well..if they get it wrong so help me god! I hope Kojima has ALOT of his input into this disaster waiting to happen...I'd much rather they have all this movie in CG.

Anyway hope your enjoying 'Sons Of Liberty' as much as I did.

It's not the best Metal Gear Solid game, but it's not awful either. Still very enjoyable, but not the best.

Personally, the first game and Snake Eater are the most memorable. Just like Crescent, the ending of Snake Eater gets me every time. I still vote that last boss battle as the most emotional in video game history. My vision was blurred with tears the first time I went into that battle, haha. That quickly turned to anger, then it was back to tears.

If you want to get into the series, I recommend you start from the first game and then play the second to get into the story. Don't just look up the story, or watch a YouTube run down of the story. You have to play them to fully appreciate them.

As for the movie, I heard it's in good hands. I'm still very sceptical, but I'm still going to see it.

If you like MGS1 and all that it's the best. Step aside and look at the one that was created before it because MGS1 is an almost identical game to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Still both great games. I like MG2:SS better then MGS1. MGS3 was so fun to play through. I did enjoy playing a lot of MGS2 since I would spend hours over night getting the Dog Tags.

I also hear those Portable Ops games are good too.

Yay I get to rant about METAL GEAR! :D

    *Ahem*

Metal Gear Solid II: Guns of the Patriots was the game I held the least amount of respect for, and probably still is, but that being said, I still love this game with all my heart. I'm not too big a fan or Raiden, but I liked him more as a normal human being that a cyborg robot. (If ya ask me, there's only room for one of those, and that's Frank Jeager(Grey Fox) )
This story line was hard for me to understand. I found it to be the most complicated at the time I first played. MGS1 really sets the ground work for it pretty well though, and then anything you might still not get is answered in MGS4. That said, there were many a improvements over the original MGS that were really appreciated for me. First person aiming was nice to have. (I know remakes of MGS1 have it, but y'know, that's not the original way, the original game was meant to be played...originally... xD)

Now them there Portable Ops games are a damn masterpiece if I say so myself. (But I'm a ridiculous fan of the series) It's especially nice if ya wanna know a bit more about Campbell's past. (He may suck in MGS1, 2, and even 4, but back in Big Boss's day, he was a badass!) (That's enough spoilers though...)

I really think Metal Gear Solid is a more interesting series when you play more of them. (They constantly referance themselves in ways that only the fans would really recognize, which worries me for first time players, but still tickles my Metal Gear-ception bone. )

Overall if the storyline you genuinly find interesting, then you'll be hook equally on all of the games. (Well Cept Metal Gear Acid, but there's reason to like them, I thought it was an awesome take. (Try FFT meets MGS) )
If ya liked MGS2, you'll definetly like the others.

(Occelot rules. See sig pic. That is all. :3 )

Just found my soundtrack i got with my first MGS purchase, dog tags too, but they're rusty.

What i loved about MGS was the soundtrack, especially the main theme, kinda took to it as its written/sang in Irish, its just amazing..

Kinda reminds me of the lost of the mohicans theme in parts...

The best part of Metal Gear Solid II. If only I had that ONE version they released that skateboarding level on.

    A great remix though.
