Alot of things are really corny out of context, but even so corny is cute sometimes....yeah thats right im a guy and i just said cute.
"What's so weird about a beast from Arabic mythology aiding me in battle against a bizarre, floating creature with hooks and a glowing emblem of Yevon for a face?"
So I was staying at a friends house and I realized how accustomed I am to fantasy and corny/confusing storylines, because apparently the ending of FFX is extremely corny haha.
I didn't really realize people weren't as open about fantasy stuff like that, I mean I just figure that's what people would expect with it being "Fantasy" it's supposed to be surreal. Maybe that's why I'm a nerd
Now that I think about it though, some game stories and dialogue can come off extremely corny lol, I just don't realize it as I'm playing or I expect there to be some kind of "Mushy gushy" parts along the way so it doesn't really bother me.
I guess it just depends on the individual. The only game I can think of where the dialogue actually made me cringe was in Tales of Symphonia. I still like the game a lot, but I felt like some of the dialogue (Mainly Loyd's) was far too mushy at times for my taste and that's very rare.
For the most part I like the melodramatics ^_^;
have we become immune to corniness?

Titles are merely a means to control those we fear
If we're talking about Final Fantasy specifically, the reason it seems corny to others is because it is. The dialogue in Final Fantasy is atrocious. I'm not sure if it's something that begins with the translation or if the Japanese just have different ideas of good writing than us (probably both), but it really does suck. I've found the same to be true with many games, especially Japanese ones. I honestly think it's simply a matter of the games industry having relatively few talented writers. It's not that games can't be well written when they focus their efforts on it (see Uncharted, Enslaved, Mass Effect, etc), but in most cases, it's a secondary concern. And even when talented writers are employed, they're constrained by the necessities of the game: how does one write dialogue for some of the bizarre scenarios gameplay demands? Sometimes it's just not possible.
Until now!
Final fantasy is cheesy, but the story still sucks me in pretty good. Everytime.
