Games you play when you’re desperate

a few years ago i thought i had played every game worth playing for the ps2 and i was getting desperate
i scoured the shelves of the local game stop looking for that one game that would hold me over until they released the playstation3
then i saw it the very thing i dreaded finding,
    resident evil 4
i had sworn to myself that i would never play that game
that i wouldn't fall for all the hype that had gathered around the series
    but i was desperate
i'm not saying i regret it but up to that point
i had always thought resident evil was just a brainless first person horror game
but after the first difficult hour i was drawn in by the fear and difficulty
and thus a re fan was born

please share your own desperate gaming experiences

When I get to the point where I feel desperate to play games, I always reconsider opening my old World of Warcraft account. I haven't played since before the third expansion came out, but there are times that I miss my shaman.

This happens to me quite a bit. I just go scrounge around the 20$ bin at Walmart or find out what the hottest game of the moment is (unless I already have I move on down the list).
I usually end up trading the game back in.

    Some examples would be
    LA Noire
    Catherine
    Crysis 2
Metro 2033 (I actually kept this one)
Mass Effect (kept this one too)

Those were all bought off impulse or sheer Boredom of the current games I have.

I have a backlog of at least 30 really good games. I think I'll be busy for a while.

So... none, because I never reach that point.

I have a respectable backlog of games, tot he tune of about 70 that I would need to go back and complete.

Some that come to mind are Baten Kaitos, Uncharted, And Rogue Galaxy.

I will never have to go without games, as my backlog is huge (and I mean HUGE), but I could probably go a week before I start going cold turkey.

I just love gaming so much...

Out of all the games I have though, I end up going to Mass Effect, Fallout or Skyrim.

Re: Games you play when you’re desperate

Though I have a backlog that I lack the motivation to tackle, I still find myself going to the secondhand store or pawn shop and checking out their selection of games. I don't ever buy anything (partly because they rarely have anything I want, partly because I am broke). I think looking is fine. Kind of like making a mental list of what I would want to buy or play when I finally pluck up the nerve and complete my list of games that I have.

But there are occasions where I treat myself because I feel I had been good that month (er, week) and buy something completely spur of the moment. Then the game eventually goes to my backlog pile because I find that I don't find it interesting enough to play.

Re: Games you play when you’re desperate

I was desperate once *cue the violins*, I had just finished an unsatisfying game (Valkyrie Profile 2) and upon looking around, noticed there really wasn't anything in the collection that I hadn't tried once, struggled with and dropped, (or seen a brother playing and burst into mirthless giggles, thereby placing the game in the 'beneath my dignity' category.) I repeat, there was nothing...Nothing but a mysterious game that had been purchased on the down-low and only spoken of in whispers. This game, because of its labeling, had been mistreated and given the cold shoulder by my brothers. I scooped the game up, steeled my resolve, and popped it in the PS2. That game was Yu-Gi-Oh!: Capsule Monster Coliseum.
It was a brave course of action I took that day, for when even a smidgen of this brand name is mentioned in our house, the joking begins. Immediately the eyebrows lower and the postures change. Chest thrust out, fists curled at sides, they burp loudly: I shall defeat you, Seto Kaiba!
Hence, I had to endure much teasing. But, man, I loved the game-play! The story was a total bore, (except for Weevil, I love that kid) and the ending was a tad anticlimactic, but I wasn't playing it for that, anyway, so there.
My latest desperate game is Kingdom Hearts. 'Nuff said on that one. I3

Re: Games you play when you’re desperate

I can't say that I've ever been truly desperate to play a game for any reason, but every once in awhile I will get a strong urge to play something new. For the longest time I played RPGs almost exclusively, but these days I've branched out a lot into the action/adventure/sandbox type games. And when I don't see anything on the game store shelves (unlikely, as I have a pretty large backlog myself), well, there's always somewhere else to look. With PSOne Classics and HD updates so easily available on the PSN I rarely have to go far in search of a new gaming experience these days.
