    Game ripoffs/look-alikes

Have you ever noticed in any of the games ever released how one game would look like the other and maybe play like the other? I've noticed alot of that stuff with the NES titles. Heres some examples:

In the images below the games are as follows: Megaman, Krion's Conquest, Zelda 1, and Seiken Saikokaribaa.

The only thing I can think of being just a "rip-off" of one game to another would be Mario 2 and Doki Doki Panic, since the only real big difference that I am aware of would be that the graphics were changed up to have Mario characters appear instead of the ones that were in DDP. Maybe "rip-off" is a strong word to use, but that's how I see it.

    Doki Doki Panic
    Mario 2

Well, here's another that comes to mind. I hear talk that Okami plays a lot like a Zelda title and has a lot of similarities to the most recent installments (OOT and Twilight Princess are the ones that come to mind), but I wouldn't say it's a rip-off. Just because a game plays like another one, does that make it a rip-off? I say no.

I wouldn't call neither one of those games a "rip-off" of one game to another, there's dozens games on NES that share similarities with Megaman or Zelda, they belong to the same genre and face it you can't expect to see some major differences except maybe the visual ones on a system like NES.

There are many games that look and play like others, say Call of Duty and Medal of Honor for instance, but still I wouldn't call neither one a rip-off.

Yea you know, since graphics and the things they were able to achieve on an NES is so up to date with 360 and PS3 that it's crazy to see games similar to each other....

In Zelda you only were able to attack from range with your sword if you were full hp, that game was hard that being full health wasn't common. It's just that the bigger companies games got more reception then the others.

These new games are pretty much God of War? Every game before this is practially the same as Prince of Persia 3D, if not that then Onimusha because those are the only 2 I know of that came first.

Devil May Cry and God of War mark two radically different types of action-adventure game. They're really not that similar. God of War and Dante's Inferno, on the other hand, are essentially the same game. The ability system in Dante's Inferno is a little more elaborate than God of War (though we don't know if it will be the same for GoW3), but the game design is nearly identical to the point where the title could be "God of War: Dante's Inferno" and it would be believable.

However, that's not necessarily a bad thing. "God of War: Dante's Inferno" seems bad ass in my eyes.

No no youve got it all wrong Devil May Cry was the first hack n slash game of its type and they all used that as their reference. Even Bayonetta( which is the brainchild of the guy who came up with DMC). Onimusha isnt like any of those games as the combat is slower and more methodical.

I'm talking about hack and slash, everything is on the developers. Add in the power up button aka Devil Trigger, or make your guy have bad ass powers aka God of War...almost the same thing in my book. What else is different. Because I felt no difference in either game.

That's like saying that all shooters are the same because you have guns that shoot in all of them.

Devil May Cry is much more action oriented. The focus is on swift, stylish combos that require expert timing and reflexes to pull off. The combat in God of War is a lot more simplistic, using a style that's less over the top, less quick and less stylish while being more brutal and heavy. The adventure element in God of War is also a lot more refined than in Devil May Cry. The puzzles in Devil May Cry are barely puzzles and most of the time only serve to break up the action. God of War uses puzzles expertly and the guys and gals at Sony Santa Monica have really produced some fine puzzles for their games. So to summarize, Devil May Cry takes a lot more from the action side of the action adventure genre while God of War scales down the action a bit in favour of more adventure, similar to Zelda in some ways.

Hack and slash isn't really a useful genre, unless being applied to Dynasty Warrior type games.

Saying all FPS is the same by shooting is not what I mean with those two action adventure being the same. FPS are different, physics, the games recoil, that makes it different and whatever other crap they add into it. Compare that like that then yea they can be different.
You mash your attack button till everything dies. DMC may force you to be more precise but they still allow you to mash until you get it right. Like when you gotta do the ultra sick combo to break the thing and you are rewarded lots of crap, you can sit there with the same Level of combo until you get the final attacks you missed in, it's still simple. I never found one puzzle in GoW hard or even challenging to me. Maybe they were tougher to you, God of War was the last Action Adventure type I have played. (Played Onimushi, Ninja Gaidens and Devil May Crys when they came out, GoW beat like 6 months ago). You get little orbs or these color things that float around, oh hey you got currency, got that special color, HP, your "mana" type stat goes up. You find a potion on the ground. It's all the same in my eyes. I've only felt that an FPS was the same with Call of Duty2 and 3-World at War, CoD4 and MW2.

To make it more simple to put since I know I explain shit odd.

It feels the same playing either title. Every FPS feels different aside from just shooting at shit.

So different gun physics in FPS games = different game but different combat styles in action adventure games != different game? That's ludicrous.

Saying that "you mash your attack button till everything dies" is as much an oversimplification as if I said the same thing about a fighter or if I were to say that in an FPS, you hold the fire button until everything dies. There's a lot more depth and variation to the combat (not to mention atmosphere, level design and everything else) than you're claiming. Whether you were able to experience that or not is your problem.

Whether you found the puzzles hard or not is irrelevant. A puzzle doesn't have to be strenuously difficult to be a good puzzle. The point is that there is a larger focus on puzzles in God of War than there is in Devil May Cry.

That's because you enjoy shooters. You bother to notice the differences. You clearly don't do that with most action adventure games. It's like with music. People who don't like metal will claim that it all sounds the same while metal fans will completely disagree and claim, for example, that country music all sounds the same. If you don't bother to experience the nuances and subtleties, you aren't going to notice the differences.

That is exactly how I was trying to explain things but I just love making no sense to Jin.

I can play any of those games and it will feel the same, yes it will be good yes I will enjoy it but nonetheless it still feels the same to me. Where with an FPS, it rarely feels the same. I've played, DMC1 3 4, both Ninja Gaidens for the box, GoW, The Onimushas, I even played Darksiders the other night. I've played maybe double that in FPS but most of them for online only.

No, you were saying that all action adventure games (or hack and slash, if you'd prefer) "feel" the same, not Dante's Inferno and God of War. If you just said the latter, I wouldn't be disagreeing with you as Dante's Inferno does feel exactly like God of War.

But if God of War and Devil May Cry "feel" the same to you then honestly I don't think you're paying enough attention to either. I don't see how they feel any more similar than any other two games of the same genre.

'Spose we'll have to agree to disagree.

Lol. Devil May Cry is way more at a faster pace than God of War. The concept is similar, like leveling up, but for totally different aspects. Dante levels up his skills, weapons, and demon forms. Kratos just levels up his weapons. But then again, its like saying King of Fighters and Street Fighter are similar. I dunno...just wanted to post something!

What do you mean, I did say they are all the same to an extent, Dante' Inferno was on that list, as well as God of War, and the other games. So what are you trying to prove, with that list I pretty much said Dante's Inferno and God of War are alike, and I'm also saying most of the other game are alike. Sorry Jarad, that I don't feel the same way as you do with Action Adventures.

Don't misunderstand me, Kyle. I wasn't trying to say that you did not equate God of War to Dante's Inferno. What I was trying to say was that if you had just done that, I would be agreeing with you. But, as you said yourself, you were lumping a bunch of others in their as well, which I disagree with.

Don't get discouraged. Disagreements can be impersonal.

I noticed that Hello Kitty: Island Adventures seems a lot like World of Warcraft...
    Suspiciously so.
And my ebgames store never has any copies of Hello Kitty: Island Adventures or Battletoads Wii Edition, though they were cool enough to suggest Battletoads on VC for which they sold cards.

For me, the Yakuza games feel like Shenmue. Well, I say feel, but I've only ever watched my brother play Shenmue.

They have that same painfulness getting around the map, and where Shenmue was a lot more sophisticated at having certain things going on at certain times of the day, Yakuza had certain things that could only be done after certain chapters.

I felt as if I was running around all the time looking for fun things to do and engaging in fights and tasks to get money. Also, those locker keys were a pest. ><

I thought that too. Games were you just jump/run around and slash and examine objects that are of no use to you what-so-ever.

I've always found that games take certain elements from other games but I've never seen it so blatantly as with Darksiders.

The game is almost like a very "dark" Zelda game. Okay, I get that some things work in games and so other companies copy it. But this is right down to pushing/pulling big cubes, a dungeon level with lots of spiders and webs you have to rip through, a horse that you can call that has 5 "energy cells" rather than carrots to boost the speed (however riding Ruin is waaaay cooler than Epona IMO)... the list goes on.

My final straw was the blatant gank of the gun from Portal, the voidwalker. Except one shot was red instead of orange. Oh, and unlike Portal, you could only shoot it at certain things. Because THAT makes it seem like less of a rip off.

Considering we'll likely never get Shenmue 3, I'm okay with that.

Besides, Sega can copy itself if it wants.

    Until now!

I'm still trying to think of a reason why I missed that. x_X
    I knew that. ><

How about the huge cross between the Tomb Raider (Eidos), Uncharted (SCE) and Prince of Persia (... can't remember) games?

It might not always be visual, but the controls and on screen movements look and feel the same.

Tomb Raider and Uncharted I get (though Uncharted goes way beyond what Tomb Raider has ever been), but Prince of Persia? I understand that they both have traversal puzzles/platforming, but isn't it a bit of a stretch to equate the two when one borders the third person shooter genre while the other has you stabbing people with combos?

    Ubisoft, by the way.
