    Fallout: New Vegas

I've read quite a few things now about the newest addition to the Fallot series. It sounds really good. I'm glad they kept the general Fallout 3 look without making the whole things a clone.

It sounds like a great story, too. Basically waking up from memory loss makes the whole things great for exploration. Finding out exactly who attacked your character and why should be interesting, too.

If you didn't already know the general opening story, from what i've read, is that your character delivers things across Vegas. Whilst doing this you are attacked and wake up in a hole.

I think the addition of gambling will be awesome. We have the run around of Vegas to play mini-games. Plus they have apparently made an entirely new one for the game.

I'm wondering how the various in-game factions are going to turn out. Will we have to pick sides? God I hope so. I enjoy picking sides.

Can't wait to see more on this. Also to find out where the Brotherhood come is.

I love Fallout and can't wait for this. Has anybody read anything else?

    EDIT:
Oh, I even saw a picture of a character wearing boxing gloves and slugging a super mutant. That just made me grin.

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

Is it a game of its own, or an expansion of 3? I thought It was supposed to be an expansion, and was wondering why it was being sold by itself and so expensive, heh. Saw a preview of it earlier today. Looks cool. Anyhoo...

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

It's an entirely new game. It isn't even made by the same team. The team that worked on 3 is working on Fallout 4 which they are saying will be online.

This one focuses on groups fighting over Vegas which still has power (due to the hoover dam) and has no where near as much mutation as other places. In fact I think one article said that Vegas wasn't directly hit with radiation at all.

Heres the new info I have:

It is done by Obsidian Entertainment.
Fallout 3 was made by ZeniMax's team.

    As for the online content:

Original Fallout developer and publisher, Interplay, has finally officially announced a new MMO to be based on the series, Fallout: Online - and is now recruiting beta testers.

Interplay has long been rumoured to be working on a Fallout MMO, but has faced financial and legal troubles after selling the rights to the franchise to Bethesda, who have licensed rights to an MMO back to Interplay.

Interplay was only able to secure the rights to the MMO after proving that it would be able to pay royalties to Bethesda, achieve a minimum of $30 million USD in funding and get the project into full-scale development - all within two years.

Fallout: Online is being co-developed by Masthead Studios, though much of the work is being done internally at Interplay and original Fallout designer Chris Taylor has joined the project as a Lead System Designer.

The official Fallout: Online website is now accepting sign-ups for beta testers, but makes no mention of when the closed beta will kick off. Interplay has said that a public beta will begin in 2012 however - hinting at a long development cycle.

What else did I say, oh yes less mutation:

    Background on FallOut: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas will take place in 2280, 3 years after Fallout 3 and 203 years after the Great War of 2077, making this installment the chronologically latest in the series thus far.
The game is set in post-apocalyptic Las Vegas, Nevada, bringing the series back to its West Coast roots. However, the city was not struck directly by a nuclear attack like most other American cities in the Fallout universe, resulting in less damage to the city and the degree of mutation of its inhabitants to be minimal, though in a recent preview by OXMOnline it can be noted that the writer describes the city of Las Vegas as a “near decimated” ruin. The Las Vegas of the Fallout time line was unlike the one that is known today. In the divergent timeline Vegas didn’t become the decadent gambling capital that we know it as today, rather it remained as the holiday resort that it was in the 50’s; with the Teaser Trailer showing several large high rise building, perhaps once being hotels or casinos.
The city is divided between two main opposing factions: the New California Republic (NCR), based in the McCarran Airport, and Caesar’s Legion, a slaver group based on the decaying Las Vegas Strip, with factions such as The Brotherhood of Steel and the Supermutants of the state of Utolbitha playing a secondary role. Landmarks to be featured in Fallout: New Vegas include the Hoover Dam, which is active and supplying power to the city, the Lucky 38 hotel; a structure which resembles the real life Stratosphere Las Vegas hotel and casino, and the Helios One solar energy plant; the Fallout world’s take on The Solar Project, with the effects of the divergent timeline having a profound effect on this particular locale.
The game centers around the player’s main character known as ‘the Courier,’ who has been nearly killed by an unknown assailant and left in a shallow grave. After being discovered in the grave by a TV robot named Victor, the Courier is patched up by a ‘Doctor Mitchell’ in the nearby town of Goodsprings. At this point the player allocates skill points, chooses their name, sex, age,and appearance, before embarking upon their quest to find out who had tried to kill them, and why.

    I read everything about FallOut.

Oh, Obsidian are the original team behind Fallout btw!

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

I am rather looking forward to New Vegas. I find that the boys and girls at Obsidian do good work when they're using someone else's tech (such as KotOR 2) and from what I've heard, the tech has been tweaked enough to still be fresh. Plus it's the Fallout 3 engine, they could have left it alone and it still would be great. I'm looking most forward to hardcore mode. I'm not usually one for playing on the hardest difficulties, but the idea of having to actually eat, sleep and drink water intrigues me. That and machine gun grenade launchers.

Looking forward to this game, have it on pre-order. The game it's self is a game in it's own rights, I believe it is set in a similar time (2270 something) much like in Fallout 3.. Some magazines are calling it Fallout 3.5, but the 2 games have no ties to each other.

New Vegas is set before Fallout 3, I think. Pretty sure I read that somewhere.

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

Since it's by Obsidian I'm expecting great things.
The system of 3, but a story (and hopefully pop culture references) more like the older titles.
It's definitely the game I'm looking forwards to most this year...

FNV is set 3 years after F3. I think the character in FNV is the character from F3, or something like that.

    Spoiler:
    But he/she DIED!!

How could that be? (Although I suppose...
    Spoiler:
In the expansion, he/she didn't die, and continued on after the end of the original game. But what about the people who only played Vanilla Fallout 3, never read anything on the internet, and therefore don't know?!!

But yeah, I heard it was set 3 years later, too. Anyhoo...

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

I don't think you'll play as the same person from Fallout 3 because it has absolutely no relation to Fallout 3. BUT if you make the same character again, then I suppose we could pretend.

New Vegas is on my to get list. I loved how Fallout 3 played, and literally spent a few hundred hours on it across many different characters, so I know I'll like New Vegas. I'm really looking forward to checking out Hard Core mode, and having a new place to explore (exploring is all I did in Fallout 3). =D

I've heard some negative reviews about it though, but I only think that matters if you're a complete graphics whore.

Maybe some of us folks in the UK are a bunch of snooty buggers, but I thought Fallout 3 looked pretty damn good when it came out. Also, we have a few months to go, and I see no reason why whatever OPM have seen can't be improved until release.

Anyone else gonna buy the Special Edition?

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

I thought Fallout 3 looked really good too, last month when I played it, ha. In fact, I remember watching some friends playing the recently released sequel to Army of Two, and thinking that Fallout 3 looked better by comparrison. *shrug* Granted, I've noticed in recent plays that some of the terrain looks a little blocky in places, and I even came across some floating rocks, heh. Anyhoo...

Yeah, it's definitely a new character. Fallout 3's protagonist had a Pip-boy by the time New Vegas starts and there are references in Fallout 3 to what happens to a person's arm in the removal of one...

The same people that did Alpha Protocol is doing it right? Well that game was effin stupid. It had so much potential and FAILED. But you never know, these guys always take the sequels and ruin them, we'll have to wait and find out.

KOTOR II Was okay, first one was better.
Alpha Protocol seems like they released it before it ever got tested.
And let's pray all their hard work and time went into new vegas.

    @ Jonathanx221

Some of the same people worked on the Fallout franchise before Fallout 3. I'd recommend grabbing the first two (they're often very cheap in multipacks these days) so you have an idea what to expect.

If it turns out like Alpha Protocol I'll be very disappointed...

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

So this just came out yesterday or the day before. Who has it? I preordered a collector's edition through Game Stop, so I had it the 19th (weren't supposed to sell it before then; said so on the security tape of the PS3 case itself... did the regular edition come out the day before? I thought it was supposed to be the 18th.) I was going to put off playing it because I was right in the middle of Grandia... but then I read the comic and watched the making of DVD that came with the game, so... (and to be honest, Grandia hasn't been holding my interest anyway. Seems like it was intended for newbies to RPG's. No offense to those who love it.)

I'm about 4 or 5 hours in. Just found the city of Novac, I think it was called... when the game froze up, and I had to turn it off. It did this yesterday too when I had barely been playing for like 15 minutes. I dunno if it's the game or my system not being able to handle it/being on for too long and getting too hot.)

But in any case, it's a lot of fun so far! Similar to Fallout 3 with the same game engine, but different enough in a completely new setting, new enemies, and completely different factions from the last game. I also note that the highways seem far more significant in travelling in this game. I also note that outside of the first town you go to and a ranger station, you don't really feel safe anywhere you go. I wandered north of that first town, found a radscorpian, killed it, ran into another radscorpian... and while I was fighting that one, a giant radscorpian came up and started dealing half my health in damage. It also moved faster than I did. And my game had autosaved right when I ran into the second radscorpian, so it took a few reloads to get the hell outta there. Also, I will say right now that you should expect to be ambushed quite frequently while traveling. Once you realize this, it can be fairly obvious where the ambushes are gonna come, so keep an eye out.

That said, aside from the giant radscorpian... most enemies I've run into have been fairly killable so far. Some enemies are tougher than others, and when you run into a bunch of them, you're for a fight, but you should be able to pull out on top of most of them. Like Fallout 3, this isn't Fallout 1 or 2 level of difficulty, here.

And... those are my observations so far. Anyhoo...

    Wuv, Yer Mom

EDIT: Oh yeah! One of the most important NPC's is voiced by none other than... Matthew Perry. So you have Captain Jean Luc Picard and Boromir in Oblivion, Aslan in Fallout 3... and Chandler Bing in Fallout: New Vegas. Haha. Nah, I like him; think he's a good actor.

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

^Patrick Stewart did a voice in Oblivion too. I think it was for Uriel Septim? Anyway, I didn't know Matthew Perry lent his voice to New Vegas. I do know that the guy who plays Ethan in Lost (William Mapother) voices one of the fraction leaders/colonels.

I so want this game to come out already. I'd play Fallout 3 in preparation, but I've played that one to death already, and I need something new to do.

    Honestly, I'm really looking forward to Friday. Mum didn't look too happy when I mentioned the price of the collectors edition, but I've had the money for this tucked away for a few months. ^^;

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

You could compare it to an FPS simply in that capacity, as you do shoot in first person. You can also do 3rd person, though. It also has RPG elements that, in my opinion, beat Fable into the ground. You have almost limitless customization, a tonne of weaponry and armour choices and the cool addition of followers. Also, Fallout doesn't lie when it claims to be free roam. You can go anywhere, anytime. You can also shoot and kill most of the people.

-In comparison to Fable the moral choices have more of an effect on the world, too. Based on your choices people will give you things, or fear you. You can also hear people talk about what you've done, even reward it.

-In comparison to CoD you can have great firefights with companions in toe. You can't, however, go online. That isn't a drawback from me.

Anyway, the Fallout universe has SO MUCH to offer. You should give it a shot, Squall. You won't regret it.

As far as I'm concerned this game rapes Fable and CoD combined.
It's been almost ten years since I've been this hooked on a game - think over ten hours of gaming a day since release here.

    And I don't even think I'm halfway...

I had a day off yesterday and had to choose between playing Fallout:NV or Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2. I picked the obvious.

I played it for like 12 hours yesterday, and got rather far. I love everything about this game. I was excited when I finally got to the strip, and was able to play some Blackjack, and Roulette. Great game, can't wait to see what else it has to offer.

So far, so good. I'm really liking it. ^^

Might be spoilers ahead (non-story related); you've been warned.

To tell you the truth, I haven't done much. I stuck around Goodsprings for a while, doing quests around the settlement and such. I then raided a couple of empty houses, and got over-encumbered very quickly - I then realised I needed a safe house. There's no online guides out at the moment, so it took a while to work something out, and a lot of careful consideration on what I really needed in my inventory. I think maybe a special chest should have been included right at the very start in a familiar place which is safe to store stuff in.

I get panicky when I don't have a place to store my things, and I'm even more panicky when I leave things about - who'd want to loose the supplies gathered in over six hours of gaming? I wasn't about to leave my gear in a "not safe" place because of the resets which Oblivion and Fallout 3 are famous for. I eventually found Novac, and I'm hoping to hell that it's safe to store things in the safe house there; I've heard of people coming back after a few in-game days to find the containers had reset. I don't particularly like the safe house, but I feel free to pick up more junk now.

Looking forward to getting a new place.

I've yet to use some of the newer features, like the companion wheel, and using the various benches around the place. I don't think I'm going to be a fan of the ammo equip thing (I don't even like it in BioShock... yet), but I'll try it out.

Other than that, I'm enjoying the Fallout 3 feel. It doesn't feel like another piece of DLC, to which I'm glad. I've not experienced many problems in the way of sticking/freezing. Every now and then it has done, but it does it a lot more often in the third-person view. The game totally froze once, but I have a feeling that had something to do with a game patch that was released as I was playing (when I turned the game back on after I reset the console, it asked me to update to 1.01).

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

I love the return of the "wild west" vibe the original Fallout games had. I've been pretending I'm Clint Eastwood, roaming the southwest. In retrospect, I should have tried to enter nothing for a name. Oh well.

I'm really liking it so far. Hardcore mode is freaking intense. I thought having to eat, drink and sleep would be the hardest thing about it, but that's smooth sailing compared to the stimpacks healing over time, having to see a doctor/use a doctor's kit to fix limbs and not healing when resting. That's quite literally killing me. When I see a fountain, **** the radiation I get, I need the health. Gulp, gulp.

I'm also loving what so far seems to be a far wider weapon selection than Fallout 3 had. And that's not even accounting for the modifications.

Alpha Protocol sucked ass, but kudos to you on this one Obsidian.

    Until now!

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

Haven't gotten a chance to play it yet, but quite a few friends on my friends list are plowing through the game so far. Last I checked about an hour ago, one of my friends was level 27, is that pretty good for the game just being out?

Looks really good though, I'd get it if I wasn't already planning on getting Call of Duty: Black Ops!

Meier: Hey Pete, I said I started to, it just didn't end the with the same number of women. Then again this one is kind of on the outs with me if she doesn't straighten up and fly right so that means I will be back in it for the thrill of the kill. Got some in the reserves. Even got a rePETEr (<---- like that ay? AYYYYY?) on the back burner.

Block: I do like the rePETEr except it kinda makes it sound like you're going to pork Pete. No homo.

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

Yeah, that's pretty good for a game that's only been out a week, Rocky. He must've been playing a lot...

So one thing that's really been annoying me are all the damned invisible walls. They're not just in places like the edge of the world or around areas with no texture maps or whatever; they're all over the fucking place, keeping me from going where I want to go. I mean seriously; some places, it makes no sense for them to be there. I walked the peremeter of the Boomer's area, and there were places you could not walk up to the fence. Places where, if you fell down, you'd be stuck between a rockface and an invisible wall. There have also been places like that in the middle of the map. "You want to go over this smooth hill to get to your destination? No dice. You have to go all the way around, taking our predistined route for you." Free-roaming, my ass.

I've also experienced more freeze ups, but other than that, I've still been enjoying and playing the piss out of it. Anyhoo...

    Re: Fallout: New Vegas

Or he made use of the glitch at the powerplant. *shrug*

    I've found loads of bugs now that I've like... played for about... just under... fifty hours. Some bugs have rendered missions inaccessible, which is a damn shame. Still, I can do them with my other character. But eh. I like my main character, me, to get all the good stuff before the others. >>;

The patch that was released didn't fix much for me either. In fact, I've had to restart MORE times than before it came out. Most annoying so far has been the one where the console decides to restart (has never happened before, and it only happened at certain points in New Vegas - not with other games, so I know it's not the early stages of YLOD). For some reason, loading the casinos on the Strip (especially Tops) takes over twice as long as entering other places, which is annoying.

    Also, is it just me, or are Deathclaws even more deadly in this game than Fallout 3? I was doing a mission for some chick, and had to go into a quarry full of them... and my fully repaired missile launcher barely hit the surface of their HP. I even switched the game to Very Easy, and they still give me problems. I had to do that mission with a Stealth Boy, and hope to hell they wouldn't spot me. ;-;

    SPOILER!!:
I swear to ****ing GOD, if Victor disappears/doesn't lemmie talk to him when I'm in my 38 suite, I will snap my disc.

I was highly disappointed with the obvious lack of testing before the game came out - if you're not going to release a "perfect" game, then don't bother releasing it. Heck, I don't even expect a fully all singing, all dancing game - I can look past some flaws. But releasing a game that's FULL of unused/unneeded coding which totally screws everything up? Perleaze.

If you can get past the bugs, it's a good game. I sound like I totally hate it, but I'm just frustrated with it at the moment.
