    Re: Fallout 3

If anyone is interested a new teaser trailer has been released for New Vegas. Cant tell too much from it other than Vegas looks pretty glitzy. And post apocolyptic earth has been invaded by the Helghast. Who knew?

This game had so many awesome weapons but what was everyones weapon of choice? Either the Tesla cannon or Lincolns repeater rifle for me.

    Re: Fallout 3

Oh man, I can't even remember all of the weapons I got my hands on.

I LOVED Lincoln's Repeater. It was a freakin beast and took forever to wear down.

The Terrible Shotgun was also super useful to me, especially for clearing out Raiders.

The Man Opener was a decent melee weapon, but it was more of a novelty. Still pretty badass to go and chop people up with a concrete saw.

As for armor, I was a big fan of the Chinese Stealth armor, mostly because it reminded me way too much of Gray Fox from MGS. I also liked the Tribal Power armor. It just looked badass, especially with the bandana. Kind of some hardcore Mad Max stuff right there.

I can't believe I haven't got the DLC of this game yet. I just haven't gotten around to it.

As someone said above, my favourite game of the generation so far. I cannot praise the game enough. They took everything good from the Elder Scrolls series, condensed it, and made it better.

    Re: Fallout 3

I bought this game back in December (or was it January?) for my PS3, and I finally started playing it a couple weeks ago. Last night, I beat it. I think I need the GOTY Edition now, because the ending was disappointing
    Spoiler:
Seriously, an ending on a sandbox rpg? Kinda lame. Also, all we get is a few pictures, a voiceover, and then some credits over what's basically the title screen?

That aside, it was pretty awesome. I love sandbox rpg's-especially ones made by Bethesda. Had trouble aiming without VATS at first, but then I seemed to get better (maybe it was my skill points in small guns going up by a lot?) Love the look of the power suits, the 1950's "future" technology, the fricken' firelancer, and of course, Liberty Prime (thinking of asking someone to make me a Liberty Prime-themed banner and avatar, in fact.)

So I read through the thread, and I seemed to miss it if it was discussed, but how did everyone play the game? I put most my point in sneak, small guns, speech, and lockpicking at first, and then I started putting my points in the other guns and science as the game progressed (plus some in explosives so I could disarm the Megaton bomb.) I was always thrilled when I could sneak up on an NPC, shoot them, and get a critical hit, exploding them in a few seconds. There was one point I did that to a super mutant; I was listening to their conversation from behind a small barrier, then I popped up and shot one into a bloody mess immediately. I also decided to clear out all the slavers in Paradise Falls with Star backing me up. That was pretty chaotic, and I'm surprised I survived it, but it felt really good killing all those fuckers, the named ones, the guy at the front who had a mouth, and the boss especially. (I think I might have anger issues...) I also used persuasion and diplomacy on more than one occasion, however.
    Spoiler:
Including to the President and Autumn at the end.

There's still a lot of places I know I haven't found yet, so I'll probably play it a little more before moving on to the next game. Anyhoo...

    Re: Fallout 3

I recently started watching an LP of Fallout 3 and I have to say, it does look interesting. I don't usually play games with shooter elements though, cause I pretty much suck at it. How friendly is this game to more traditional RPGers?

    Re: Fallout 3

You don't actually have to play it like a FPS at all if you don't want to; you could just use "VATS" all the time-press a button, and the computer zooms in on an enemy, allowing you to select a specific body part to attack while also giving you the percentage of likelihood that that attack will hit. Although it often pays to try and play the game like an FPS for a little while while you're waiting for your "action points" to refill (these determine how many shots you can take using the VATS system.) EDIT: One important thing to add is that the game actually stops the action when you go into VATS mode, which you might've guessed on your own, but yeah.

Really, I don't care much for FPS's either, and I was able to jump right into this one. Then again, I also played the Elder Scrolls games before this, and the later ones are rather similar... Anyhoo...

    Re: Fallout 3

Despite what some people say, this game is not an FPS. If it were, it would be an awful FPS because the gun mechanics are horrid. Aiming and shooting feels in no way realistic and even when not using VATS, it's evident that the game is based on RPG statistics, not FPS style physics/hit detection mechanics. I don't generally like using the term "Oblivion with guns" to describe this game, but it's closer to that than it is to an actual FPS. So feel free to dip your feet in. The water's nice.

    Until now!

Fallout 3 was brilliant, all the DLC was a definite boost though. I spent around 3 days straight playing through the game alone, on a 46" plasma, loved every minute. Just got Fallout New Vegas, and is top banana

    Re: Fallout 3

Hmm, unfortunately I've never played Elder Scrolls or Oblivion. The closest I've come to playing this style RPG is probably Demon's Souls, which isn't first person but does play in the same sort of style. Maybe.

I think either way it doesn't hurt to at least give it a shot, now I'm mainly deciding whether I want to drop the cash and pick it up at the local Gamestop or put it at the top of my queue and hope Gamefly sends it to me.

    Re: Fallout 3

maybe this is a bad example, but the VATS system almost reminds me of a more detailed KoToR style of play? if that helps any. In either case, I've had friends that would play FPSes over RPGs anyday, and they loved Fallout 3 (which I would find to be a tougher transition than the people who feel RPG>FPS, at least for this game.) It's definitely worth a buy.

    Re: Fallout 3

I just finished and platinum'ed New Vegas... it was alright. I prefer Fallout 3 on a few other levels, but it was a blast. I'm just being bitter because of the mess New Vegas is at the moment. ><

I found the Firelance weapon on my first character, and was my favourite gun until I found out I had less than twenty ammo for it, and I had nothing to repair it with. I never used it again on that character. On my next playthrough, and every run I've done since, I've never been able to find that random encounter again.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can find an Alien Blaster at the alien crash site... I can't remember where exactly it is, but it's just north of a radio tower place. Quite a way north between Megaton and Scrapyard, I think. Might have to look it up if you're still curious/if you haven't found one already.

It has a creepier than usual Fallout vibe and was done incredibly well. The weapons are also very solid and are also really useful for the rest of the game. There are parts that are hilarious, ****ed up and just plain creepy, so it's exactly what you'd expect, especially with a real down South, redneck vibe.
Point Lookout was pretty awesome. Unfortunately, it froze a lot with me, and walking through certain areas was a complete nightmare for me. The first town area you get to when you get of the ferry wouldn't even let me take a step without a crash.

Also, Zeta froze a few times, but not as much for me. Only problem I had was storage - I wanted everything I could find. =(

The Terrible Shotgun. I rarely changed weapons when I got hold of this beast, and I had LOADS of shells by the time I got it. One or two headshots with that baby on a Deathclaw, and it was over. Otherwise I used a Chinese Assault Rifle. After Point Lookout, the Fire Axe became a good friend of mine too.

As for the armour... I used the Wanderer's Leather Armour. After Operation Anchorage, I went MGS and used the Chinese Sneaking Suit and used the sword. Much fun. I really liked the Medic Power Armour roo.

I was really boring and stuck to the same stuff throughout all playthroughs. I worked on Medical, Repair and Science mostly, and kept Barter, Lockpick and Speech as secondary. I sent spare points to the gun areas I used most too.

I was a big explorer too, and found lots of joy when I found unmarked sidequests. I knew what the ending was going to be like pre-DLC, so I packed in everything before I even spoke to Free Dog (?). xD

I wouldn't say Elder Scrolls is like Demon's Souls, but I suppose both have similarities. Oblivion is dead between Fable and Demon's Souls in my opinion.

I say it's a good game, and will burn many hours. It's doesn't have a strong story, but there's loads to do otherwise and is a lot of fun (VATs is very humorous with the Bloody Mess perk if you like a bit silly gore). It doesn't really play/feel like a FPS that much, and is pretty friendly if you're new to that style of gaming.

    Post. And a half.
