    Does anyone else do this?

    Hello

When I play a game, I like to get engrossed by the story and often find myself pretending that I'm a part of the game. like the character IS an extension of me.

That's why I enjoy FF so much. Because it's a fantasy world you can be a part of.

So I'm just wondering if anyone else does this? It's a little silly, but fun!

    Also,

What character do you like to pretend to be the most? Haha

Yeah this happens to me everytime I turn a FF game on,I mostly mock (or at least attempt) Vanille's voice from FF13,like all the time for some reason. Then (this is weird but..) I kinda..pretend like I am fighting and/or summoning aeons, ediolons, etc.Im kinda weird, but hey..at least I get into the game lol

Hehehe. That's awesome! I have an Australian accent but I think mine is more annoying than Vanille's. Yeah I too have done the summoning thing. I always hope there's no hidden cameras around because I'd look pretty silly lol

    That's what it's all about I guess!

You know, I wonder if an FF play would be good. People already dress up as characters from games anyways, it would only need a stage and the voice acting.

Not to divert the focus of the thread, but reading your posts got me thingking about it.

Hehe. A play would be good. But it'd have to be done really well otherwise it'd look pretty corny lol

Re: Does anyone else do this?

Yeah, I like really getting into the game. Final Fantasy or otherwise.

Games where you can name the characters are also fun for that reason and I bet a lot of people named FF characters they identified with after themselves.

Right now I'm playing FF9 and if I'm not careful I'll start picking up Zidane's mannerisms but it makes the game more entertaining to play.

Some conventions have play-like in-character act sessions on stages, commonly with costumes. I've never seen one but they can either be really good or very painful to watch according to rumor. It wouldn't be much more different than roleplay but with props and physical acting, maybe.

Re: Does anyone else do this?

It's called empathy and projection bias. There's something that could said about gestaltism also...

It's a form of entertainment. It also allows you to put yourself in a place where you could do things you normally wouldn't be able to do. On a side note, linking up with a satelite and a remote robot sent to Europa while staring at my screen on Earth is something I could consider a video game. I get to pretend I'm a robot. Getting into stories has been a great favorite for thoasands of years, at least since 3000bc, even before that. VGs just allow people like us to act along with the story. It's part of the point. Well, I really liked playing .hack characters because I was playing as a character in the game who was playing a character in a MORG. You're role-playing a character who is roleplaying a character in a sim'ed online game. I loved it.

In fact, it kind of reminds me of TFF. There are boards in the .hack game series with people using the same handle. It would be as if people on TFF went to XI and XIV with the same handle and completely went with what you guys just said. I could see right now a giant flying fish creature chasing Andromeda as a Miqo'te, with the name of Andromeda >;>. Using a MORG is pretty much the computer fan nerd's Ren. fair or cosplay con. It's just a whole lot more fun than standing in a park throwing clothed nerf balls at your opponents, while yelling creative names of your special fairie-with-boots powers, wondering why your girlfriend is standing with her top hanging out and with only body paint covering mother nature's sap jars, listening to people describe their garb with suffixes such as +3 and +4, comparing each other's Tri-force and 1-up Mushroom tattooes- all the which way you stubble around as someone quicker and much geekier beat you at swords, throwing knives, throwing axes, tent coverings, somehow had belly dancer company (<;< it was probably for the wine and mead), and to just find yourself wondering why even the face-painted wood sleepers won't accept you, and you start to wonder why oh why didn't I just geek out on some stupid MORG and paid the &|@%;#/ cost that was said I wasn't even supposed to pay in the first place.

Re: Does anyone else do this?

I do this all the time with RPGs. Especially in Fallout, Oblivion and Dragon Age because you have a little more freedom with the choices you make in character design and gameplay. Every choice I make on my first save is based on the choices I'd make if it were me in that situation. I'll enjoy running around and trying on different clothes just to get a nice looking outfit, I'll experiment with weapons, I'll even buy/pick up non-owned items and put them around my home to make it look less boring.

...yet another reason why I'm looking forward to Skyrim. ._.

I used to do that when i was a teenage. Now not so much.
THen again I don't play many Jrpgs anymore.

Now in wrpgs I tend to mold the character to my image. So they literally are me.

Re: Does anyone else do this?

I was the unfortunate guy who always got caught doing this when I was younger ... I would play Final Fantasy, then if my friends came to all on me to go out, we would play Final Fantasy out in the field ... I'd always be Aerith ... except I'd call myself Aerith the flower boy haha. I'd grab a fallen branch and use it as a staff, pretend to be magical, and took one ofmy mum's pearls to be White Materia, and marbles as other materia ... god i loved it, but always got caught and embarrassed

Re: Does anyone else do this?

    Hoboy! Where to start.

Right now, I find myself to be more like Lightning, but that isn't where it started.

From FFVIII, I would switch between Squall and Rinoa. Both were appealing characters to me. Different, but slightly the same.

Next would be Yuna. I freakin love Yuna. She had her heart set on completing a specific mission, but did something completely opposite. Even though it was said to be impossible. But she did it anyway and Survived! Then goes on to save the world AGAIN! So cool!

Then I would have to say Ashe. I had something in common with her I think. Maybe the loss of a loved one. I'm not sure. She was a trooper though.

Then there are a few people from Anime series that I probably don't want to get into because that's a long list. I can relate to Lucy from Elfen Lied. That was probably my favourite (obviously). I actually have a story to tell and I might share it in my journal at some point.

Yea guy's not that unusual but when reading the scripts in the older games I have my own specific voices for each character in my head and will read their parts with that voice in my head.... kinda like reading a book to a child.

Haha, I'm glad someone mentioned this! I thought it was just me! I sometimes get so absorbed by cut scenes that I find myself reading the subtitles and mouthing the lines along with the characters!
I always find myself drawn to grumpy, aggressive types, too! Or just general badasses! That's why I flipping love Jecht, Auron, and Lightning!
I develop instant soft spots for characters with power. Ho ho, power! *rubs hands*

Re: Does anyone else do this?

Sometimes when i'm home alone i like to pretend that i'm summoning an Esper from FFXII. Either that or a summon from one of the other games that appeals to me xD

I've always felt that games and in particular the characters are an extension of ourselves. Not just because we play to escape reality, but because we grow to develop a bond with the characters. We want them to succeed. It becomes something much more deeper than conventional friendships, like a personal and exclusive relationship with ourselves and our perceptions of the characters.

I don't imagine myself as one of the characters, but I almost always engage with the events as if I'm experiencing them alongside the characters, in FF games more than any other. I don't need to pretend, it just happens and leads to talking to the TV screen or screaming at it, it's like when watching a football game: 'you stupid idiot why didn't you pass?!' but in FF, it's more like: 'what?! you want to fight that thing?! I'm the one pressing the buttons!' and sometimes in battles I talk to the enemies or make a ridiculous evil laugh. Of course all this attachment, with over 100 hours playing, it leads to excessive sadness when the game ends, even if it's a happy ending.

But quoting lines from the characters in real life to people who don't get it... well that's something else, and it leads to raised eyebrows most of the time!

    Spot on ^

That pretty much sums up what I'd say, but better, about being engaged so much in an FF play through. I really end up acting alongside the characters, but with no ability to change or engage a situation. Which kinda sucks lol.

But that's why I love Oblivion and Fallout. I get into them way too much, like if someone speaks to me the wrong way then I'll react with a V.A.T.S overkill to the head from point blank with a Plasma Rifle regardless of who they are. DAMN YOU ROBERT, YOU VAMPIRE PR*CK!

Wow, I Do This Sorta Thing Quite Often...XD

Sometimes I Like To Pretend I'm Either Cloud, Or Vincent Valentine, But I Put My Own Customized Twist To The Character. I Also Like To Imagine That I Have all These Cool Powers, Like I Can Summon Things Or Whatever. In My Head When I Look At Something Out Side, Like If I'm Looking Up At The Clouds, I End Up Doing hand Movements To Resemble That Of Summoning Something In The Sky, Like Bahamut Or Something, And In My Head I Can Actually Clearly See The Colours And Everything, And It Looks So Beautiful. Its Pretty Weird, But I Like Living Out My Imagination Sometimes. Create My Own Alternate World In My Mind While I'm Outside. Has Anyone Ever Done Something Like This Before? Or Is It Just Me?
