I'm more excited about a new Ivalice game. Seeing the downfall of the era and life style of XII going into the lifestyle and era of Tactics, where the technology descended.
Gotta just have to wait and see what they decide to choose next.
When IX came out, I respected the whole thought of trying to reference the past, but I personally felt it was too early to try and do a retro game. You had only had 7 & 8 set in more futuristic settings, but now with 10, 12, and 13 placed in more modern environment, we now have 5 out of 6 of the past traditional game (not counting 11) which are based in the future.
While I wasn't motived by IX's attempt at a midevil approach, I'm actually hoping now that we'll be able to get another game that has a more Lord of the Rings / Dungeons & Dragons / Forgotten Realms, appeal.
I guess I'm just sort of hoping that a game will come out, perhaps XV or XVI that will have a different feel than have 8, 10, or 12, which all feature very advanced societies.
What do you think?

I'm hoping for a very advanced society that uses all types of technoligies but the game still has to have the FF feel to it...
@ Kisuke - I'm wondering if we've seen that. 8 and 10 esspecially had a very advanced feel. 13 really looks like it's going to press that advancement, and 12 just felt like starwars (although I loved it), but I was sort of hoping for a regression again, which they really haven't done to the level of 4 or 6 since modern graphics came about.
we certainly have seen a technological advance but what I mean is technolgy that is unheard and a game that is considerably far in the future the only problem I see with my way of thinking is that if this transpires will it still have the FF feel because when you play a FF you expect to use swords and bows but in a futuristic game like i've explained you will use futuristic weaponary such as laser guns or a light saber type sword....Odds are it probably will never happen but it is a interseting thought to have...
@ Kisuke - I would like the idea. You're right though, I don't think that FF would ever get away from using Swords & Shields, which you're correct would have to go in such a game.
A Final Fantasy that takes place over Multiple Planets perhaps? IX did it. Sort of. IV & VIII took you to the moon.
What about a story where there is a threat that threatens the solar system and not just a planet? Perhaps the story could be one where we discover humanities origins or life on a distant planet, and of course a crazy twist would drop.
That would be a very interesting game Locke...My idea's all started while playing Mass Effect and it made me wonder...
While playing VII I had hoped you would get to see more of space maybe fight some space monsters....
I did want to do more in space with VII. I don't know what though. The moon didn't really play a roll in the story. I would have liked to get to the moon in VIII for sure. Wow you know, now that I think about it, a lot of games played with the idea of space. IV, V, VII, and VIII had a direct space relationship. IX sort of did.
Is it really important if the FF game is set in the future or the past, I don't care about such a thing as long as the game is great. And why was it to early to make non futuristic game, just because FF VII and VIII were futuristic doesn't necessarily mean that FF IX should be, what logic did you use to come to that conclusion. And it goes for all the FF game that should come, just because the previous ones were futuristic is not good enough reason that the next one should be, it's not even a reason when you think about it.

@ Xanatos - Agreed, there was no logic in my opinion, just an opinion. I guess I make that opinion though because it seemed that when 9 was coming out there was quite a backlash that 8 esspecially had gone way overboad with it's futuristic elements and a certain segment of fans had in actuality pushed developers to make this game that referenced the past, even though that may or may not have been what they really wanted to do. I'd say it wasn't, because they've continued after that to move in a more sci-fi direction.
So I guess what I mean is that I'm personally ready for a genuine attempt at a retrogame, and I just sort of look at 9 as a lollypop that was given to satify a disgrunted minority of the fan base who had just had their midevil fantasy tooth pulled by 8.

@ Locke - FF IX wasn't meant to satisfy some minority especially after a great game like FF VIII who by my opinion didn't go overboard and trust me it was planed to be a non futuristic game from the same moment they decided to make FF IX. Just because they continued to make futuristic games doesn't necessarily mean that they didn't wanted to make IX non futuristic, if SquareSoft didn't wanted they wouldn't do it, it's simple as that.
And why should a company like SquareEnix make a game just for certain minority, do you really believe that minority can force a mighty company like SquareEnix to do something like that, I don't think so. When you think about it if majority with all those request's and petitions didn't force SquareEnix to remake FF VII than I highly doubt that a certain minority forced them to make FF IX and if they did than I wouldn't exactly call them a minority. And when we're speaking about forcing I think that SquareEnix was forced to continue to make futuristic games because there are just to many FF VII, VIII fan's that weren't satisfied with the old school approach of FF IX, nuff said.

I think that this thread belongs in General Final Fantasy, since the first post BARELY even mentions FFXIII.
Quoted for truth.
One last thing @ Locke4God. What's with all the criticism for FFIX? I swear it seems like almost every post I read of yours, you diss that particular game.
Click at your own risk.:
I was just using it as an example. It fit here because I was thinking about it in the context of 13. 13 looks great, and is further pushing the sci-fi element, perhaps even farther than it had gone before. I do give 9 a harder time, and if it is a favorite of yours, I do appologize. I use it as an example here, because it was an attempt at a retro game, and I thought maybe it could be time for another go at that concept.
