What is your preferred way of learning magic?

In all the FF games, we have seen many different ways you can receive magic spells. What is your favorite magic system? Mine would be the Esper system from VI where you equip your esper and you learn the following spells from the esper you equipped.

Re: What is your preferred way of learning magic?

You do buy magic in final Fantasy XII, so that one is in wrong category, also, what's a question mark doing besides FF IX, typo?

I'll go with learning magic as in Final Fantasy VI and IX where your characters learn magic via summons/equipment.

I would rather just learn the magic, so you can have an unlimited supply of it(unless of your mp runs out)
It was a pain in the ass every time I didnt have the certain magic I wanted to use in FFVlll
but the drawing system was still cool, as long as you had enough of everything.
I also liked how you could split magic between the party members.
Final Fantasy and Samurai Champloo FTW!!

I liked the drawing system and it made your characters very powerful but my vote goes to learning magic/abilities from equipment which gives each character a distinct class to use in your party and with battle strategies.

Learning magic. Buying it just did my head in and drawing magic made me suicidal. I liked equipping it as well. prefer learnign though, the sphere grid was like the best thing ever

Re: What is your preferred way of learning magic?

I'm stuck between equipping and learning. In FFVII you could set someone up with materia in ways that could benefit you in battle, and benefit the attributes and such of the materia (<green materia> + All, for example). That was my favourite system from the Final Fantasy series to date.

Learning is good too, but time consuming. I hated the sphere grid from FFX. HATED. Licence board from FFXII was pretty good too, and it was so easy to master everyone's board when you got the Golden Amulets (At the time, I went from where I bought them and ran all the way north to Arcadia, fighting everything I saw on the way, and had enough to almost complete them... sans some espers.). I really liked the FFXIII Crystarium. Sure it's linear, but it works. CP gathering sucks when you complete the game though. =(

Personally, I like to learn magic. I like how in IX, certain characters can only learn certain magic and abilities. It makes me think about who I should bring with me in a party, lets me be strategic.

I like learning, like in X-2, that was a nice system for ability aquisition.
For Our Lord Sheogorath, without Whom all Thought would be linear and all Feeling would be fleeting. Blessed are the Madmen, for they hold the keys to secret knowledge. Blessed are the Phobic, always wary of that which would do them harm. Blessed are the Obsessed, for their courses are clear. Blessed are the Addicts, may they quench the thirst that never ebbs. Blessed are the Murderous, for they have found beauty in the grotesque. Blessed are the Firelovers, for their hearts are always warm. Blessed are the Artists, for in their hands the impossible is made real. Blessed are the Musicians, for in their ears they hear the music of the soul. Blessed are the Sleepless, as they bask in wakeful dreaming. Blessed are the Paranoid, ever-watchful for our enemies. Blessed are the Visionaries, for their eyes see what might be. Blessed are the Painlovers, for in their suffering, we grow stronger. Blessed is the Madgod, who tricks us when we are foolish, punishes us when we are wrong, tortures us when we are unmindful, and loves us in our imperfection.

FF8. All I have to do is draw and It is mine. We aren't talking about the stack so system so... By the first boss, you could learn over 15 magics...

Your pathetic existence will shut down. I will make your lives end in ruin. Fear me, as you fear death. Not a threat, not a promise, but what must be finished. 7 final arcs...

I'm gonna have to vote for FF VII. It has, in my opinion, the most versatile magic system of the series, with almost limitless combinations available to the skilled payers. Also, you don't have to teach everyone the best spell in game, just the one materia needs to be leveled for any one spell, unless you are making a materia combo. I really hated the system used in FF VIII. Drawing spells seemed very mundane....

Re: What is your preferred way of learning magic?

i like equipping it, it just makes it so much easier, and you can switch out magic you dont want, you can use materia combinations, like Bolt+All. Only downside is that you lose all you materia in one point in the game, but at least you get it back ^^

I personally like buying magic. Although learning/ equipping magic makes the most sense, once I buy the magic, it's mine forever.

I couldn't have said that better myself. In times like this I usually compare IX and X. If you wanted to trash a boss vulnerable to, let's say, Holy, in IX Eiko and Quina are your only solutions. In X, everyone eventually learns everything, including Holy, giving you less pressure (and in my opinion, less fun). It's like you shouldn't even bother trying to decide, anyone will do (although the early battles of X were pretty fun, especially since Wakka had the highest Accuracy).

Er, I'm just rambling here. Overall, I prefer IX's way of learning magic. Your mages gets some unique spells; Garnet gets Scan, Vivi is the only one with Black Magic, Eiko gets Jewel, Holy, and Might, and Quina is the only one with Enemy skills. Oh, how fun!

I personally like learning magic myself. I like the spell system from Final Fantasy III (US). It made was something to accomplish sometimes before you could advance if you needed a spell or 2 to get past an area or boss. Plus, you had to search for the espers to find the spells you wanted also.
