13 is my first, my friend is giving me 5 and 6 via the PS1 collection tomorrow, and I know to avoid 14 at all costs. Other than that, any suggestions?

SPOILER!!:
VII :Is the staple. start here.
IX :Has the most the offer gamewise.
VIII :Is subjectivly my favorite.
VI :the greatest game ever made, however if you are new to final fantasy, check out 7,8 or 9 before this one. these days 16bit can scare people off.
DO NOT play the ff7 spin offs or watch the movie before playing ff7. They will provide more misdirection/confusion than anything.

That's not exactly true. I think if you do play FFVII: Crisis Core, then your safe. I honestly think it helps you understand the storyline of VII a bit more. I remember, during my first playthrough of VII, thinking, who the heck is Zack? And Crisis Core helped me understand who that character is, and what happened.
But definitely give VII a try, and get IX too. Those are both great games.

"Peace is but a shadow of death, desperate to forget its painful past...
Though we hope for promising years. After shedding a thousand tears, yesterday's sorrow constantly nears.
And while the moon still shines blue, by dawn, it will turn to scarlet hue."
i believe you should just start from the beginning and go from there cause i have played them all and going from the beginning is better then starting from the middle
It really doesn't matter where you start. I've starting playing FF at VII. You don't necessarily need to start at I. There's no story line you need to follow, because each FF is different from the last, so...

I thought about mentioning that.
also like I said in my previous post, why would he want to sit through weeks of 8/16 bit medicrety when he could just ask us which is the best and start with that. (like he did...)
To Kuja: My girlfriend was really into the FFVII spin offs (drige, core, AC) when she played FFVII and said she didnt like it. She seemed upset that Zack. The main game also does not have the gimicky anime look/themese that we find in Drige or Core. AC had nothing to do with anything aside from using the same characters, and that dub. god awful. Also going from modern pixel resolution to 1997 graphics is difficult, if even possible for some people.SPOILER!!:
yeah your right Kuja but I was always told that if u want to get the consept of of a game start from the beginning and what could it hurt, Ur also right on the fact that it doesn't matter where u start from just as long as you find out if you really like the game cause i know i do i have played every one of the FF games and love every single one of them
