Do you mean where your character don't go to a seperate screen when they get into a battle? I think it was FF XI to first have that, and it was done again in FF XII.
Those are the only two games in the series I can think of that do it.

You mean Active Dimension Battle. Let's see... only game I played with that was FFXII. No random battles, you can fight or flee. A system that had potential, but I still feel it was flawed. Yes, it's on the PS2, you can find it just about anywhere these days.
