FFVI had: Yeti, Gogo, and Gau
only Gau had a tiny effect on anything, they just seem to be ...there.

FFVII: Vincent, first of all he's a hidden character automatically putting him in the 'unnecissary' group. His backstory is only mildly interesting.

FFIX: Steiner, I hate this f*ckin guy! annoying, stupid, annoying.

What about you, what do you think?

My least favorite character has to be Tidus from Final Fantasy X.
My god. I wanted to reach through my TV screen and pimpslap him.

Reason: he was whiny, whiny, whiny. I was so glad when I saw what happened to him.

I assume you mean Vaan. I didn't like him either, I think he just represents the player (most likely a ~14 year old male) he was a spectator, just like the player.

Totally agree with djinn. Steiner is such a douche. Plus it appears he wears eyeshadow.

    FFVI:
-Gau (Getting allt those skills was super unneccesary)
Sure that game had more unneeded characters but they weren't as annoying, it was fun to have army of playable characters, he was just the only one i didn't like).

    FFIX:
-Amarant (Agree what has been said and i wanted Beatrix or Lani instead) - Not that i disliked him but i didn't want him on my team. I liked Steiner but i always wanted Beatrix instead of him.

    FFXII:
-Vaan (never use him, i only have him leveled up so he can jump in and heal if needed, one of most annoying characters ever)

FFVII: Sephiroth - he's too girly to be a villain. Long hair, wants his mama, and he became evil by coming to wrong conclusions. he has way too many problems that he can handle. Eat that fanboys and girls

FFXIII: Vanille, she needs duct tape desperately.

FFVII- Yuffie and vincent, you can go the game without getting them so obviously they are not "necessary"

FFIX- Amarant and eiko they both could have been people you talk to you dont actually need either one of them as opposed to being part of the story

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

When it comes to this kind of question my response tends to be longer than usual as I dislike quite a few characters from Final Fantasy franchise. To keep it short, this time I'll mention few characters I hate the most. First of all, there is a clear difference between useless characters, and the ones I hate, as hate for particular character can make me overlook his or her's potential in battle, Cait Sith would be prime example.

Not all, but close enough, majority of characters from both Final Fantasy V & X-2 fit perfectly into this category. As far as I'm concern, by far the weakest point of both games are the characters themselves.

Not really a fan of angsty, pessimist individuals, one of the reasons I hated Squall at first, but Squall changed, Cloud on the other hand stayed the same. Far from being a fan of his counterpart as well, not really the character itself as much the kids who think good villains are cool looking ones, which resulted in endless list of villains with Sephiroth on first place.

Most annoying ones, definitely Yuffie, and Eiko. Both useful characters, but their persona kept me from using them in battle.

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

I was a fan of Steiner, he was my tank. I hated Yuna though, because she was so goddamn wishy-washy about everything. Tidus was a whiny little bitch, and he kind of just put me off from FFX.

I never really liked Yuffie, because she just seemed to be a real pain in the ass. First she takes your materia, so you're forced to chase her around, lest you want to go without. Plus it was an annoying series of QnA just to encounter her. Vincent wasn't spectacular either, but he was more of a bonus for going through the Shinra Mansion.

In VI, I didn't really think anyone was too useless. Gogo was useful since you could take him and give him essentially anyone's skill. Umaro was sick when he had the Blizzard ring, and that other accessory. Even Gau could be great, if given the right enemies to fight, even though training him is a bitch.

in VII, I really wasn't a fan of Zell. He was a little too annoying for me.

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

I have only one that really comes to mind... Hope. All he did for about 7 chapters is whine and whine how Snow killed his mother and my god I wanted to say "GTFO OF MY TEAM!!!!" whenever I had to use him, expecially in chapter 5, OMFGGG!!!!!! I hated that.... Had to play as hope for like half the chapter, not to mention how every other cut scene was about his revenge to kill Snow for killing his mother.... Geeze, what a little annoying kid who doesnt understand that revenge wont solve anything, he is a fag, I thought that in chapter 7 he would surly fall to his death. I was like "YAY,, THE GODDAMN LITTLE BITCH IS GONE!!!" (Thats literally what I thought so those quotations wouldn't be there if I removed the B***** part) then Snow just had to save him --_--

Overall he is annoying and he didnt know when to shut up about his mother, and when it comes to stats, Vanille is a better healer and magic user than he is, so he even got bested by a girl, now that's gotta say something. But I use Hope for his Synergist role with Sazh so I can have Haste and be protected with other crap at the same time, makes things less fair, but I think I'll use this strategy on Dahaka seeing as how he has about 3 mill HP.
    Final Fantasy games played:1,2,3,6,7,9,10,12,13
    Final Fantasy games beaten:7,10,13

I really didnt get too much into 1-3, I got about halfway through 6, didnt play 9 that much, and played 12 at a friends house.

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

Like others, I wasn't overtly fond of Vaan and Penelo from FFXII (though for some reason, I used Vaan anyway...) They seemed like a last minute addition, and didn't seem to quite fit in the story after like the first few hours of the game (well, Penelo from the get-go.) Why are you here? To appeal to the Japanese' fixation on youthful prodigies.

I didn't care much for Hope either. Actually, where I was kinda indifferent to Vaan and Penelo, I outright disliked this character. He got better as the game went on, but I really found him annoying at the beginning, angsting over his dead mother and blaming Snow for everything. Yes, he's a teenager. Yes, teenagers might act like that. So? Doesn't make him any more likable. Plus, he's got that teenage bishounen look that's been running rampant in Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts lately. He's too pretty. Also, Lightning. You don't have to be a bitch or an ice queen to be a strong female! The events early in the game just stuck with me about her throughout the rest of it, because she really didn't change very much. She just cared about the other characters a little bit more by the end.

Cloud was mostly alright in the original FF7 game, but in everything he's been in since, he's become this fricken' insufferable emo ass who doesn't think he can do anything right, for some reason. Shut the fuck up, Cloud! Go save the world with that ridiculously over-sized sword of yours! Also never cared for Yuffie. She was a bitch. Didn't like her personality at all. Or the famous theft of the materia, or her plot with her father to steal it again once the events of the first game are over (their discussion when he sees her before your party leaves Wutai.) Also, that Sora look-alike in Advent Children. Where did he come from? Why is he getting more focus than the old party members that we actually want to see? And the three villains. Way too androgynous and pretty for me. Couldn't take them seriously.

Can't really think of any other characters that I've disliked a lot. Anyhoo...

I've thought about this before, and seen it in alot of anime/games did a bit of research.

In american media we have male archetypes like "the guido", "the biker", "the nerd", ect...
Bishōnen is a japanese male comparable to what we know as a "pretty boy"

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

    Cloud, Sephiroth, Selphie, and Amarant.

Cloud because, I hated his personality, even in VII before he turned full out emo, I could hardly tolerate him. Which is why I haven't replayed VII in about three years. And Sephiroth, well...I didn't really understand his purpose in the game, all I remember was him being angry about his mother and other stuff, him burning a village and that's about it. I just never thought of him as a good villian.

Selphie, what can I say, the first time I saw here in VIII i hated her. I have no idea why though.

Amarant, he seemed so bland to me. As if he had no real reason to be there, it seemed as if the whole beef with Zidane was only to keep him in the party until the end of the game. While other party members actually had soemthing to gain from defeating Kuja. Sure Quina had no real reason to be there either, but s/he was comic releif.

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

I agree with Xanatos with differences between hating a character and finding them useless.

    Ones I hated:
VII-Yuffie- Just annoying character traits with the "Materia! Mine!" thing.
    VIII- Selphie- Waaaay too bubbly.
VIII- Irvine- I loved him at first, then the incident at the end of Disk 1. WHY DID YOU GET SO LAME ALL OF A SUDDEN!!!

    Ones I found useless/ unnecessary:
VI- Umaro- Never really cared for berzerking anyway. Plus little backstory.
    VI- Gogo- Little backstory.
VII- Yuffie- As far as I'm concerned, she only really made a difference during the Wutai sidestory.
VII- Vincent- I haven't played Dirge of Cerberus, but he didn't really matter much to the story of Final Fantasy VII.
VIII-Irvine- Again, I wanted to love him, but because of the incident at the end of Disk 1, he didn't have much use afterwards (as far as I can remember).
IX- Amarant- He just sorta appears all of sudden and then sticks with you for the rest of the game.
XII- Penelo- I saw her as the female equivalent to Vaan, but had even less to contribute to the story.

Haven't had the chance to play XIII, so can't say much on that yet.
    Fantasies completed:
I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

VII: Yuffie- I hate any character that is a douche. Yuffie takes the crown for the biggest. It also pissed me off that I was still getting over her stealing my materia when she joined again. I wanted to take her head off with my stupidly long sword. She also had no bearing on the story what-so-ever. If she had died nothing would have been lost and I don't think I would have blinked.

VIII: Selphie- She's another character I barely ever used because her attacks weren't up to scratch. I had no beef with her like I do with Yuffie but I still found her annoying and useless.

IX: Quina- I don't care how powerful she/he can get I hated that fat d*ckhead. The only mildly entertaining thing 'it' ever did was the cooking scene. It had no baring on the story. She/ he dissapprears several times throughout the game and it doesn't matter at all. I just hated the sight of it, basically.
Eiko- Garnet had all the good stuff already. Eiko came too late in the game to compare to Garnet. She was a complete idiot, too. On may occasions I wished her death but couldn't grant my own wish... Dispite efforts.
Amarant- Just pointless. Pretty much for the reasons already stated. Plus... What is he? He can't be a man.

X: Rikku- She was an arse.

XII: Vaan and Penelo. If they had just left them out completely I'd have been immensely happy. Vaan just reminded me of Vyse from Skies of Arcadia but his personality was much worse and he gave nothing to the plot. The only reason I used him was because I had so much time to get used to his battle style. Penelo for the same reasons, she was pointless let's face it. It's like tehy just shoved them in for variety.

XIII: Hope- Like somebody else said; I wished him out of my party soooooo many times but, again, couldn't do jack. So annoying for an RPG gamer to not be able to control his own party. His personality sucked so bad it made me want to cry. I put down the game for weeks because he was the main plot for a chapter.

I actually had no problems with any earlier characters.

Re: Most Unessasary/Disliked Character and why?

I'm not counting any of the optional characters in the games because well they are optional and not necessary cwutididthur?

    FF4 -

    Edward: spoony ****ing bard.

FuSoYa: I lose badass Cain for the man with alzheimers?! Jeezaz.

Edge: Hate to say it, but he was definitely the weaklink on the final battle team. Cool typical hothead/chauvinst but thats about it.

    FF6 -

    Mog: Ugh.

Gau: Okay but a lot of babysitting to get him powerful.

Cyan: Yawn. Plus he gets outclassed by everyone else by the WoR due to his slowness.

Strago: Another old man/super mage character, too bad I dislike them. His character wasn't terrible though, I'll give him that.

Relm: her special ability is shit-worthless and game glitchy, NEXT.

    FF7:

Cait Sith: So I get a character on my team that happens to be a cat riding a stuffed toy, with a name based off of an old Celtic god-spirit thingie, that happens to betray my whole party and causes Aeris to off herself, but its okay because he after that he is rarely mentioned in the story again?

Red XIII: some creepy dog thingie that speaks, has a floaty wispy thing for a grandpa, shitty limitbreaks, and relies on MP to do damage with his ultimate weapon. zzzzzzzz

    FF8:

    Selphie: -_-

    FF9:

    All of them.

    FF10:

Wakka was just kind of "there", and pretty much unnecessary throughout like the second half of the game and on, storyline-wise.
†SOLDIER† - "Yep still better than you"

Vaan and Panelo. If you take them away from the story Ashe and Bashc are still fighting for the same thing, to free Dalmasca. Sure Vaan wants to avenge his brother but almost every other character wants to avenge someone aswell. To me he's just sort of an inroduction to the game, kinda like how Roxas is in Kingdom Hearts 2. And Panelo is just sort of 'there' with no real purpose.

Since Final Fantasy Tactics was the first FF game I played seriously, and recognized it as the godsend of gaming, I played the sequels...and will regret it till the day I'm on my death bed, awaiting for the Valkyries to take me to Valhalla. consequently, here's a short list of FF characters I despise. I could go back and re play the games, but I'm not an internet game celebrity...yet.

    (pl

Vincent: Vincent has nothing to do with the plot. and what he does have to do is literally crammed in at the last second. a few lines of dialogue with the turks and Hojo, and that's it. Also, he's responsible for one of the worst third person shooters I've played.

Cait Sith: A cat robot that rides on a moogle robot which hits it's enemies with a megaphone...Do you need any other reason?

Yuffie: This little monster is singlehandedly guilty of spawning a line of ninjas that weren't ninjas. Explanation? Ninja's are stealthy, they wore clothing that would allow them to blend within their surroundings. Casual clothes for a city or village, the traditional suit for night missions (which were dark blue as opposed to popular belief of black), They were assassins, utilizing weapons designed for efficient elimination. She uses a godamned giant shuriken that somehow flies back to her rather than impale her opponent! Also, she's supposedly 17, but she acts like she's friggin' 12.

Zell: This little punk was annoying. Not Tidus annoying, but he still pisses me off like when my cousin comes over to crash because he lost the keys to his house again. He prances around like a stereotypical closeted homosexual listening to pop music that was trying to be butch. But from this day forward, all I will remember him for is his constant latching on to Squall. Squall may be a *****, but I could sympathize with him getting Zell to shut the hell up

Selphie: This is the second "17 but acts like 12" character that I was introduced to, and she pissed me off even more than the Non-ninja. Singing a made up song about trains and time travelling? using friggin Nunchucks? Nunchucks that look like were made by a person who never saw a Bruce Lee movie too? Nunchucks were converted farm implements, and it takes skill to full utilize their potential. She is 17, and is using a complicated weapon that requires patience and discipline. you do he friggin math

(haven't played FF9 yet, heard it was decent)

Kimarhi: first off, I hate furries. This is something that's been rooted in my mind since my first encounter with a sonic fansite, thus ruining any love that I had for the series, but enough with my career as a furry slayer. Kimarhi is another one of the characters that had no reason being there. the first half of the game he displays no character. and once we do, it turns out he's one of those "I was the runt, so I'm always pissed" characters. Nobody cares! This character style has been around LONG before this. He's boring, and he's whole story is completely unsurprising. But then again, this is FFX. Nearly everything is awful about this game.

Tidus: I want to punch whoever wrote this character. I want to go to town on them. Whenever I close my eyes, I see this bastard cackling that laugh. That laugh that will come back to me if I ever forget the existence of this game. if I do ever forget it, the wind will carry that noise to my ears and will flood my mind with flashbacks of this game. This spawn of the Japanese anime/manga consciousness is the poster child for the dangers of over japanification. He's an amalgamation of Cloud's Whininess, Squall's bitching, and the idiocy of Zell, Selphie, and Yuffie. He has no place in this story, having nothing to do with the world that he's transported into. Sure, his father's basically the earth screwer, but Yuna and Auron have more to do with the place and would make much better main protagonists. Auron is a tortured soul seeking rest, and in order to attain that, he must slay his once valued friend. Yuna's story is sacrificing herself for a world that she barely knows, and her struggling with making the ultimate sacrifice. Tidus' only reason for being was to make a protagonist that would appeal to the Otaku, the kind of person who cosplays daily, would buy Final Fantasy necklaces and jewelry just for their costumes, memorizes every single volume of manga and anime just because they wish to have been born in a land where you get your first dirty mag at the age of 7. And I swear to you, if I ever find someone in my travels who raves about how awesome this game is, I will give them one chance. One chance for me to rationally explain why this character is absolutely wretched, and if they don't agree saying "He's just good!" or some other brick wall-like response, I will ring hells bells on him... lightning will strike the earth, rending the ground asunder, all life extinguishing before my wrath, and may the gods have mercy on his soul!!!

Rikku: Where in the freaking hell do I start? Oh yeah, she's supposed to be the fan service character, constantly getting ass shots of her, and one scene where she pats her breasts and ass. Here's the kicker, Otakus, she is FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. She is the same age as my half-sister, and she still half believes in Santa Claus! If this game was examined in the media (as alarmist as the news stations already are) there would've been a shitstorm so volatile, that gems and masterpieces such as Bioshock, Assassin's creed, and No More Heroes would never have been released or even made. But she has even less to do with the story than Tidus or Kimarhi. They could've just had one of the characters know her language, and she could have been so easily written out that she never could have existed. And I for one relish in that thought.

Vaan and Penelo: I'm just going to be perfectly blunt and say that these two have jackity shit to do with anything in the story...again. I may have been halfway through the game when I stopped, but I was far enough to realize that they could have just crossed off their space in the story. Literally, just white out their opening thing up to until When Balthier and his furry sex slave show up...in fact, get rid of Fran too.

okay...I gotta go cleanse the pallete. I'm going to play Final Fantasy Tactics. that's right, a game where none of characters make me want to commit seppuku with a rusty halbred.

    O.o ohhh list time!

I'll follow what Xanatos said about useless and annoying.

    Useless.
Gau- He participated almost little to nothing about FF6. For a main unavoidable character that is.
Selphie- I liked her but, she again almost did nothing for the game.
Quina- ...What was it's point in the story again?

I think most FFX characters had major story roles which is why I liked them all.

Vaan- Really, somebody already stated that he is just for the ride, as it could have been somebody else in his shoes. His place in the story is low.
Penelo- I think she was just there to serve as Vaans only storyrole.

Hope- Really now? He again served little to the story. Really little, more as melodramatic elements.

    Characters I hated?
Steiner- Really now, his costume design was horrible and his attitude matched it.
Garnet- Maybe it's just the graphical choice but she irked me.
Wakka- I just didn't like the fact of using a ball in battle... >.>
    Vaan- Little arrogant whore ^^
Fran- Yea I know the vierra are smart but, all that come out of her mouth is "ancient wise knowledge," that irked me because she served little to the story as well.
Lightning- Seriously, she is PMS'ing. If she hit me like she did snow... 3 times, or Fang... I would have killed her... >.>

Your pathetic existence will shut down. I will make your lives end in ruin. Fear me, as you fear death. Not a threat, not a promise, but what must be finished. 7 final arcs...

There aren't really any characters I hate, but the one I disliked the most? I'm going to say Cait Sith.

It's not that I find him annoying either. I just remember when I first played FFVII, and Cait Sith
    Spoiler:
turned out be a spy for Shinra. And of course, you are made to hate Shinra, so I didn't like him from that point

and I suppose a little bit of dislike from that point spilled over into now, where I don't care for him as much as the other characters.
