    Just stopped caring.

Those of you who know me at all, know my disdain for specific FF games which i will not get into. and this has been a trend which has been slowly getting worse for me since FF7.

I think with the combination of raving fanboys/girls, plus the complete lack of caring towards my intellect, and experimenting with other forms of role playing games, im beginning to wonder if there is any hope for the series for me, or am i just going to see this series as an absolute joke only cause i see a series and many die hard fans who seem to think that every game before it comes out think its the greatest thing since the invention of sliced bread.

or do you think i should just give up on the series now. do you guys think i should hold out hope for the series?

    Re: Just stopped caring.

I had a moment where i wasn't as into these games but don't give up on the series just because they're given alot of hype. If you don't like the new games of the series I suggest going with the titles with you love. Replay FF I-VI and stuff, and buy the ports that you've always wanted. That worked for me.

    Yes.

That's the same thing I do. Since all the hype over FFVII (which I found to be a good game, but extremely overrated and a huge let-down), then every subsequent game after that, I have found myself reverting more and more to the older games*. I bought a Nintendo DS and FFIVDS recently, which means I now have the SNES cartridge, the SNES version on an emulator, the PSX version, the GBA version, and the DS version. And in a thread here not too long ago, I found a post about a PSP version of FFIV that includes The After Years, so I'll have to get that, too. I'm even considering finding a PSX emulator and downloading some good RPG roms for that.

Don't get me wrong, I still play the newer ones. (Well, not too recently as I've been away from home, but still.) I bought FFXIII prettymuch as soon as it came out and played that. My stepmother, for some reason, shipped me FFXII while I was in Iraq last time, so after I brought it home so I could actually play it on a PS2 and a TV, I played that. I've bought FFXI twice now. I just never really got into them. (FFXI was different though, because it looked like a decent game and definitely fun, it just seemed like unless you were constantly on the internet looking things up, you were clueless. There was no in-game guide, nothing to tell you where to go or what to do next. I might try out WoW when I get back, because I've heard that it's a lot better about that.)

*(Not just Final Fantasy games, but a lot of SNES RGPs -- I found a semi-review and rating of all SNES RPGs online somwehere, and have since been going through my emulator playing all of them with a 7 or above rating. Lufia II was pretty damn good.)

Anyway ... is there another series that still has the quality of gameplay as the older Final Fantasy games?

Chrono Trigger and Cross are another game series. But Trigger was the better game of that series.

I think you should definitely hold out hope for the series. Just because some of them are not what you are into, doesn't mean that one down the road will be all you. Just keep on trucking and hope that one intrigues you.

i mean how can you expect the final fantasy series will be better for me, im a fan of classic fantasy, not neo futuristic fantasy. which cookie cutter characters arch types. the series is designed now for teen melodrama, and that is what they will cash in on. if anything from their trend shows they will keep being modern and futuristic with the styles of their games.

    Re: Just stopped caring.

And nobody mentioned Enix's classic Dragon Quest series?
Come now, children, get with the program!

I wouldn't suggest giving up on Final Fantasy. It has never really been their style to stick with what works. Yes, the original six titles had far more similarities than the following six (counting 7-10, 12 & 13... the MMOs are obviously left out as they are not single-player), but those similarities may only have been because of the technological limitations of the time. Even then, the leveling and magic systems in 1 & 2 were very different... 3 introduced a job system, 4 took it away in favor of a style more related to 1, 5 brought back the job system, 6 took it away again...

Exactly, every final fantasy game has been different, even the older ones. I love final fantasy because it gives me a completely different experience every time. I don't expect a FFIV, VI, IX or whatever everytime. Besides, I've seen the middle ages millions of times in various medias. Not that I don't like the setting, it's just been done a million times, especially in RPGs.

To me, Final Fantasy just isn't a series for everyone. If they don't like it, oh well. I believe Square Enix knows what its doing, it just doesn't seem like it. It's very hard to make games and make several cultures, not to mention billions of people, happy with it.

I stopped caring about what other people say about games. I'll play 'em, and I'll like 'em the way I want. Don't listen to the fanboy/girls. They've got no lives.

    Re: Just stopped caring.

Honestly people need to realize that FF9 is probably going to be the last time a Final Fantasy game will be traditional, and I think I'm okay with that, now that SE has the DQ series to fall back on.

People like new styles and methods, it's what keeps the excitement of a new game and it's what also makes the money. Sure we all have our favorite old games and stuff, but SE is making the right decision in moving forward with advancing their gameplay instead of sticking to the traditional turn based battle or atb or what have you.

For the record, I think people completely miss the fact that each FF game has really changed it up and brought the game mechanics to the next level. Sure there are certain themes and constants throughout the series, but people should realize that the FF series is all about change. Either adapt to it or fall back into obscurity with the masses.

And besides FF has plenty of spinoff series to keep things interesting (Tactics comes to mind if you like that traditional stuff). Just saiyan.

    Re: Just stopped caring.

I like to see how ridiculously unique each new game is. Everyone's trying to go for the traditional RPG thing with knights/swords/save the princess. That's ****ing boring and has been beaten to the ground.

And even if I don't like the new games or the fans that overhype it and jizz at everything final fantasy, I can still respect Square Enix for trying to make new things happen.

    Re: Just stopped caring.

For me, It's not even a matter of how much FF is changing it's the simple fact that I haven't been excited or interested in anything new from the series in a while.

I don't think that the games after the psx era are terrible but I don't get that urge of excitement to dig deeper into the game and keep playing like I used to. Everything recent that I've tried to play has not kept my interest and I end up abandoning the game for a long period of time to play something else. That says something.

I found that playing ends up feeling tedious because I'm trying to make myself enjoy something more than I really do. I end up telling myself I should like it since it's from a series I've loved for so long and that's what seems to be the only motivation to keep playing....that's not how it should be.

I haven't given up but I'm waiting for something to get me hooked again. So instead of trying to make myself hooked on a game I'm just going to wait until it pulls me in. In the meantime, I'm going to play other series that do keep my attention.

    Re: Just stopped caring.

I'm not sure how I feel. Every Final Fantasy game that I've played thus far has held my interest very well, and been a great diversion from the daily grind... except for FF13. I thought 13 was just okay. When I was playing it, I thought maybe I would look back on the experience later, feel nostalgic for it, and want to go back and play it again. A couple months later I went back and played FF9, and found that I enjoyed that experience a ton more than playing FF13... and I'd already played it through twice before.

I couldn't really get into Dissidia, Crisis Core, or Dirge of Cerberus, either (those are all spin offs, but still.) Also not really sure why I own Advent Children. Don't like that stylized feel that the FF7 spin offs have that seem to promote action over an interesting plot or characters, and Dissidia Felt like a cross between that and Kingdom Hearts, plus I wasn't patient enough to get good at the battle system. FF13 felt like it was trying to go with that same stylized feel to me (I mean, Lightning = Female Cloud, after all.)

I dunno. FF13 seemed to take things about FF7, FF8, and FF10 that I didn't like and push those even further. (The linearity of FF10, plus the teen melodrama from all three). FF8 used to be my least favorite in the series... but I still really enjoyed it. For fuck sake, I even loved FF12!! (Haven't played the MMO's, though. Those don't interest me.)

And yes, Ceasar: DQ ftw (I still haven't gotten DQ9 though... and for that matter, I've only played DQ1, 2, and 8 ) Anyhoo...

On one hand, that's definitely true ... on the other, most of the spinoffs are childish and faddish as well. Tactics was interesting, but then they came out with Tactics: Advance and that was just kiddish.

And while I appreciate them trying to get out of the midieval theme, but they've got to be somewhat realistic about it. Especially with guns. I can understand the whole idea of magic isn't realistic, but that's fine. Magic in games isn't supposed to take actual abilities and put them in video game form, it's supposed to fabricate abilities and spells. My problem is that hitting somebody with a staff or punching them can do as much damage as hitting somebody with a sword, which can do as much damage as shooting somebody. If they do it like in Tactics, with a primitive firearm that isn't well understood except somewhat by one character whose lineage has been of a technical, mechanical mindset ... that's fine. Even the guns in XII weren't bad. But if they do it like VII or VIII or especially XIII, with assault rifles, and gattling guns attached to arms and crap like that, it's just dumb. Mixing melee weapons with firearms is silly to me.

I'd like to play more of the Dragon Quest series. I've only played VIII (I think it was VIII -- I only bought it because it came with a demo of FFXII, or the other way around) and IV (the DS version), but it seems like a pretty good series, and I'd like to find more of them. I'm just not exactly sure where to look, or what system(s) they're on.

Well, if i were to give up on Final Fantasy, i would have no RPG's to play anymore. They are my RPG of choice. If FF 13 versus is a letdown, I will definitely have to find another developer..ToT

    Re: Just stopped caring.

What I've found with Square-Enix is that they are moving FF in a new direction, while making their other games more like the old FF. For example Dragon Quest (while, obviously, has kept the same as the previous DQ games) is more like older-FF games than the newer entries in the FF series itself.

But still, FF still has a lot to offer for the fans. FF: 4 Heroes of Light on DS is a newer FF game, and proves it hasn't deviated from what FF used to be, because it is a very old school style game with 3D graphics.

Yes, FF is evolving. It is being taken in a direction not everyone will approve of. But, don't give up on the series yet. Like I said, there is still plenty for it to offer.
