A bow. Because archery is badass.
Everybody knows the weapons in final fantasy as classic and unique to the series. The question though is if you were in a final fantasy game what would be your weapon of choice (limits include lightsabers, and futuristic arms, if you are going to create something new make sure it fits somewhere in to the final fantasy world)
If i had to choose it would be a swords slightly shorter then tired feet with extra length on the grip. Reason being that the swords connect into a double sided and double edged weapon
Don't look to others for knowledge, this is your story.

A gun arm! Because it's super cool..... And I'm a big of a wuss and it's long range so I can shoot and run
I love blades. Sharp edged weapons appeal to me much more than guns (coincidentally) for the same reasons as The Joker since I collect them in real life as well. If I existed in Gaia (FF world of my preferred choice) I would dual wield custom made twin blades designed just like these with a serrated edge but more length like Lucia's Cutlaseer or Rem's double sabres. One of my Many special moves would be that when combined they are able to hurl forth fire and tornado like gusts just like Agni & Rudra Also my very own special custom whip with a serrated edge that not only deeply cut/slash/break bones but cause first degree burns on contact would come hand in hand for long range combat. Ideally, these weapons are to be exclusive to me alone to draw on the fact that no mere human would posess the power or skill to wield such weapons in combat just like the legendary Masamune can only be wielded by *squeal* Sephiroth..*whisper* even tho I like the Buster Sword more. Like Vergil and Sephiroth, I "dont consider firearms befitting of a true warrior". Swordsmanship is an art and requires much more skill and discipline. Any half brained twit can use a gun.

Another one going for swords. But let's make a clear distinction: it has to be Knight Swords.
You know, the ones from Final Fantasy Tactics, which also happen to appear in FFT Advance, and which somewhat exist in Final Fantasy V (if you consider that only the Knight class and the Freelancer can equip them). Oftentimes, those are the weapons with the best enchantments in terms of power. Not for anything it's considered the archetypal weapon of the Knight (in comparison for the actual favored weapon of the Knight, which is either the axe or the mace, unless you're speaking of falchions).
Too bad Final Fantasy doesn't have a Holy Avenger. A normal magic weapon in the hands of anyone, a "cursed" sword in the hands of Evil, yet an awesome weapon that deals light damage and adds Dispel on hit when wielded by a Paladin.
Heck, why not add shields to the combat tactics. Sword & board, where you combine sword strikes with shield bashes, particularly starting with shield bashes to push the enemy away and create openings for proper thrusts. Probably going with cut & thrust weapons, perhaps with a basket hilt for decent protection.
As for long-range weaponry? Nothing short of a railgun with an accuracy enchantment or a minigun.
Delivering scathing wit as a Rogue using Sneak Attack.
Pester me on the Giant in the Playground Forums if you really need me.

'Tis a shame I can only place names now...:
Nomu-baka, this is FAR from over...:
Quite possibly my all time favorite weapons in anything. The one weapon that has ever been able to rival the lightsaber in sheer coolness could only be the gunblade...
If i could pick my own kind of weapon to carry around in the FF universe, i'd pick a custom hybrid weapon - the polebow. Flexible enough to shoot arrows from, yet sturdy enough to block close-quarter attacks.
