    Richard Knaak

He is a fantasy author that I have heard mixed reviews about. He just released a book not to long ago called "Stormrage". It had a pretty big section in the local book store here, and it got me interested in him. I am thinking about getting some of the Warcraft universe books he has written since I played the RTS games and loved the stories. Anyways I was just wondering if anyone has read his work and had any opinions on it.

    Scene from a movie.
    SPOILER!!:
[Having pulled over a speeding driver.]
Mac: All right, how about Cat Game?
Foster: Cat Game? What's the record?
Mac: Thorny did six, but I think you can do ten.
    Foster: Ten? Starting right meow?
[They go up to the car.]
    Driver: Sorry about the...
Foster: All right meow. Hand over your license and registration.
[The man gives him his license.]
Foster: Your registration? Hurry up meow.
    Driver: [laughing] Sorry.
Foster: Is there something funny here boy?
    Driver: Oh, no.
Foster: Then why you laughing, Mister... Larry Johnson?
    [Foster stares at him.]
Foster: All right meow, where were we?
Driver: Excuse me, are you saying meow?
    Foster: Am I saying meow?
    Driver: I thought...
Foster: Don't think boy. Meow, do you know how fast you were going?
    [The man laughs.]
Foster: Meow. What is so damn funny?
Driver: I could have sworn you said meow.
Foster: Do I look like a cat to you, boy? Am I jumpin' around all nimbly-bimbly from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer? DO YOU SEE ME EATING MICE?
    [The man is uncontrollably laughing.]
Foster: You stop laughing right meow!
Driver: [Stops and swallows hard.] Yes sir.
Foster: Meow, I'm gonna have to give you a ticket on this one. No buts meow. It's the law.
[Rips off the ticket and hands it to the man.]
Foster: Not so funny meow, is it?
[Foster gets up to leave, but Mac shakes his hands at him, indicating only nine meows.]
    Foster: Meow!

Mixed reviews on my man Knaak!!! I've read his Dragonlance work and I have to say that he has written some of my favourite books. My favourite of his is the Legend of Huma which would make for an awesome movie if done well - not like how Dragons of Autumn Twilight turned out, that was horrendous.

I would give him a shot as he is a pretty big name in the fantasy book world. Also, you may get a little loss - though I don't think anyone should - I recommend reading The Legend of Huma.

    Main series FFs Beaten - FF: 4x, FFII: 3x, FFIII: 3x, FFIV: 3x, FFV: 3x, FFVI: 4x, FFVII: 5x, FFVIII: 5x, FFIX: 3x, FFX: 4x, FFXII: 3x, FFXIII: 2x, FFXV: 2x

Stormrage, eh? I wonder if that has to do with his Dragonrealm series, which I'd thought had ended. I'd been collecting those books though, and reading them back between '05 and '07. He has a very cinematic writing style; certain scenes in his book I can just imagine being in a movie. Although his characters aren't always the most interesting. Loved his work with the Warcraft series. Haven't read Legend of Huma, however.

I think I actually started a thread about him a few years back that no one responded to, heh. Anyhoo...

I hate to be the dissenting voice, but what I have read of his work hasn't impressed me at all. I read one of his Dragonlance books, The Dragons of Krynn, a number of years ago. It was a terrible book, so much so that I barely remember any of it. I think there was one character I liked but he died early on, so the book was pretty much irredeemable after that. And I'm pretty lenient about dragon books, I admit. /shrugs. To each their own.

I really wish game adaption/tie-in novels were better quality. I have heard great things about some of the Warhammer 40k novels, but aside from that they all tend to be pretty poor. I read a couple of WarCraft books and had a similar reaction.

I can tell it has been quite some time since you have read "The Dragons of Krynn". The Dragons of Krynn is a collection of short stories from different - some new - Dragonlance authors. Knaak's short story is a continuation of Kaz's life after "The Legend of Huma", which Knaak wrote. His shorty story expands a bit on the early trials of creating Draconians which were first used in the Chronicles Trilogy.

I may have the title wrong, too. I know it started with The Dragons, and I know I'm not confusing it with the Dragons of Chaos, a short story anthology which I did read. It was one of the Lost Histories books, or something like that. As I said, it was years ago.

ETA: Ah, I do remember one other book I read by him. Day of the Dragon. Perhaps I meant that one. It's strange, Dragonlance on the surface is exactly the type of world I love to read about, but I just can't get into it at all. I've read probably a dozen Dragonlance novels and I can't remember any of them aside from the general feeling of being underwhelmed. I gave most, if not all of them away so I can't exactly go back and look, unfortunately.

    Re: Richard Knaak

I read the "Stormrage" book from Knaak and hated it. I had to really push myself to finish it. Which I usually never do, but a friend kept bugging me about where I was in the book and what I thought. If I didn’t have my friend though, I never would have finished it. Now the book was from the Warcraft world, so how much creative leeway did he have? It's one of the biggest problems I have with outside writers working in a universe they didn’t create and have rights to. Just how much of their story is determined for them. Our they aloud to develop characters the way they want or is it already mapped out for some movie, game, book. That a whole different discussion though. As for Knaak I was going to give him another chance, but I have a lot of other books to read before I get back to him.

Did you mean Day of Dragon the Warcraft novel? or "Land of the minotaur" Dragonlance which is in the Lost Histories collection? ( I believe his only contribution)

To each his own I haven't read his Warcraft stuff so I don't know if there any good. I've heard he over-powers his own characters or something, must be hard writing for that universe though...

I also consider his earlier work a tad better then some of his later books I've read. Maybe I'm do for a reread
