    Yeah... Sports.

We have put our heads together, and me and a collective other have decided that EBG needs a SPORTS thread. Here is what the collective other has to say:

Here's the deal; I have not been paying too much attention to the NBA as of late, because my team, the Portland Jail Blazers, suck. Although I think they're trying to do away with that image; they've got a bunch of young guys this year. I think a few were still busted this year, however. In any case... I have no idea who I'll be rooting for, come playoffs. I know I hate Shaq, so I'll probably root against his team, but other than that...

I'm more of a college fan, personally. And my OSU Beavers are kicking ass again in baseball this year, just like last year when they won the College World Series. Moved up to #4 this week in the polls... yar. They've been sweeping teams for the past few weeks now, I do believe. They also have only lost like 3 or 4 games, I think. And those were to random teams that they shouldn't have lost to... It's rather odd.

I look forward to the football season. Hope the Packers can get better this season (they almost made it last year... then again, the NFC sucked hard.) Kaz, how you likin' Steven Jackson? He hails from Los Vegas, I believe, but he came through Corvallathon, OR and the OSU beavers on the way to the pros. I don't think the Rams did all that well last year either, however... also, most the teams I was rooting for in the playoffs lost... blarg. Well, here's to hoping the NFL next season goes better, specifically for me. Anyhoo...

    YARGH!!! SPORTS!! IT'S FEMUR TIME!!

I'm not into any of those major sports. I just watch Tennis whenever I see it on ESPN. There are some spectacular matches sometimes.

I used to like the Packers. Then I came to like the Ravens. I don't like any of them much anymore, really. =\

a sports thread.. woooo sports! how about that... local... sports team!

Lets see... I don't watch the NBA but my local team the Jazz has been doing some good.. and since ESPN is played in my office (muted) it would appear they spanked the Warriors last night in a close game.

Both Utah universities that entered the playoffs this year in basketball lost the first round.... so... scratch that.. nothing to talk about there um...

Football... I don't really have a football team... 49ers are moving down the street from me...

Snowboard season is ending... mine got cut short since I broke my wrist in Park City, UT a couple months ago (yeah that sucked...)

No world cup this year so that brings us to.... BASEBALL

Spring Training is wrapping up and i'm excited. We've got a fantasy baseball league drafting soon.. its been going for 10 years with mostly the same 16 teams/friends. So it's going to rock.. I've only been in it for 2 years now, and got 2nd place last year.

Red Sox look ready to go. I used to be non-partial to baseball teams (rooting for the Dbacks when I lived in AZ and then Angels and their farm team the SL Stingers later) but never had a team until I watched the 2004 Red Sox play in Fenway park in August. IT was a killer environment to watch my first major league game in person and finally cemented a team in for me. The fans were NUTS... they'd start shouting "YANKEES SUCK, YANKEES SUCK", the whole damn ballpark, and they were playing the Blue Jays!

Me and 3 other friends went in on season tickets to 22 games for the A's this year. 2 seats, so we drafted 11 games each. I'll be seeing some great games. all 4 red sox games here, a yankees game, a cardinals game, Giants games... should be fun..

well thats about all i've got to say about sports!

Ha! That sounds like my kind of fans. At the USC/OSU game this year (which we won) the USC coach Pete Carroll was out halfway on the field complaining about something, and I was heckling him really hard. "GET OFF THE FIELD!! GET OFF THE FIELD!! SIT YER ASS DOWN!!" He actually looked up at me and smirked. That was one of my proudest moments as a sports fan. My brother also called me a "Raiders fan in training." Heh.

I don't really watch the MLB all that much, but a lot of people I know root for the Red Socks. My friend (Shadowstrike on TFF, although no one here would know him) is a fan of theirs, too. I also rooted for them in 2004. That was pretty fricken' sweet when they came back to win. My dad's a Twins fan, too, however, so I root for them as well. They seem to do well during the regular season and then choke in the playoffs every year, as far as I can tell. Anyhoo...

Portland doesn't like sports, allegedly, so I suppose we'll never get a baseball or football team up here. Heh.

Haha.. Raiders fans are crazy... I don't like them... and there are plenty of them here.

Watching the Red Sox come back in 2004 against the yankees was awesome. Game 4 was on a sunday and I was returning home from Alabama. I went into the airport with game 4 about to start and wipe the Red Sox out of another season. When I took off my jacket at security to reveal a Sox t-shirt the SECURITY MAN STARTED HECKLING ME. He was "heh heh. the last fan right here." I got off the plane thinking it was probably over. My friend picks me up in his car with sports radio playing and he's all excited for me "Have you heard yet? we're in the 11th inning!" I couldn't believe it... we sat in my driveway listening to the final outs before bringing my luggage in my house... lol... It was all uphill from there.

Hockey is big where I live... I should check it out.. I can walk to a Sharks game from my apartment.

Yeah. Heh. My brother has stories about them. I dunno if they are all from when he lived down there, but I remember one particular story he told me about, in which a Raiders fan and a Chargers fan got into an argument down in the San Diego stadium, and the Raiders fan pulled a knife, stabbed the guy, and they had to run him down, or something. Probably not a remarkable story, but *shrug* I would never pull a knife on anyone, though. I'd probably just yell stupidly at them during the game. That's what I do; heckle all game, and then walk out calmly, as if I am a normal person. Heh.

Is that the San Jose Sharks, featuring SJ Sharky? Heh. I went to one of their games when I went down there for free, because my sister in law's youth group was running the concession stands, or something. They lost, I can't remember to what team. They had the strategy to race at the puck as fast as they could, I think. Not much else.

I am a big hockey and baseball fan, supporting both of the St. Louis teams---Cardinals (baseball) and Blues (hockey). On occasion I watch tennis and golf, but I don't plan my day around these events. I couldn't care less about other sports.

The Blues just got screwed BIGTIME last night in a game against the Ottawa Senators and I'm still livid about it. Even though my team is essentially (but not mathematically) out of the playoffs, I'm still rooting for them as much as I can. I've been following Spring Training for baseball, but it's the same ol', same ol' for the Cardinals. The only surprise is Pujols hitting like a mere mortal. That will hopefully change when the season starts. I can't wait for it to start, but it will cut into my hockey playoff watching.

Speaking of, the San Jose Sharks are my favorite to go to the Stanley Cup Finals in the Western Conference. One of the ex-Blues players was traded there before the deadline, and I think he's starting to click with the system they have there. They were a major offensive threat before the trade, and now they are even more dangerous. It will be fun to watch. My dream is to see a Penguins-Sharks match-up in the finals.

Oh man, Kaz.. and I don't mean this in a taunting way, as I really respect what this guy has done for the A's and beyond but.....

La Russa found legally drunk sleeping behind the wheel in an intersection really sucks. I'm glad he didn't hurt himself.

Forgot to comment on this before. Isn't that weird? They're gonna be like the San Fransisco 49er's... in Santa Clara. Or was it a different city? I forget. I think they should just drop the SF deal, though. Kinda like the LA Angels of Anaheim... that's stupid. They are not of LA. That should be insulting to the fans that live in that city. I would be. "My city isn't good enough to be the soul residence of your team, eh? FUCK YOU." Also, the Raiders are moving to Fremont. Heh. I was listening to a radio show in which they were discussing this. "Fremont? Where the hell is Fremont?" I know where Fremont is...

Actually it's the A's that are moving to fremont. But they're doing the LA Angels thing and adding a suffix...

speculation is they'll either be the "Oakland A's in Fremont" or the "San Jose A's in Fremont" but he's pretty hellbent on the "in Fremont" thing (not of fremont, in).

But yeah... nobody knows where the **** Fremont is... which is definitely why they should not call them the Fremont A's...

I think Silicon Valley A's has a nice ring to it...

As for the 49ers.. the Mayor of SF filed a lawsuit against them demanding they not use the San Francisco name if they do indeed move. I don't see the harm in just calling them the San Francisco 49ers when they're still in the bay area.. oh well

Yeah I read about that this morning when I woke up. Stupid of him to do. At least no one was hurt. I tried to catch the news to see if he had issued some sort of apology to fans and the organization, but I was too busy.

Woo, well my City has no real professional sports teams unless you want the Bluejackets in Hockey, but I don't watch Hockey... so I don't count them. Then anything after that, that's any good, would be our College teams. Right now Ohio State's doing well in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. We were doing well in Football until Florida ****ed us up.. I tells ya Rigged >.> haha

****in a.. Game was close against Tennese.. Oden with the clutch block at the end FTW. =)

*pokes* Tiff, let's make a thread about carebears and pretty ponies!

Seriously, I don't watch any sports, though I used to watch basketball in my country. Though I've watched a live College football with my grand aunt once. I think what I need to get involved is a team to root for. For now, I just keep wishing that my gym has an indoor basketball court where I can shoot some hoops in place of a cardio workout. I think that's as close to sport as I can get..^^

Lol... what about sports you play??

Last year I played a lot of Futbol. Not like in a league or anything, but with a lot of friends and strangers on campus. I would really like to get into a softball league but I have issues with commitments.. haha... oh and finding enough people to make a team.

Beyond that I'm big into Snowboarding (Utah & Tahoe usually) and Mountain Biking (Slickrock, Downhill prior to my move, now mostly cross-country mountain single-track.) We're going to try some trails in the Santa Cruz mountains along the coast in 2 weekends... it should be sweeeeeet.

  16. #16
Sports I play? Well I can play any sport... as my athleticisim is well rounded, it lets me do decently in whatever... THOUGH this is bad because I don't specialize in one trait, so it ends up being just that... "decent" lol. Sports that I have been playing recently were American Football, Tackle, but recently it's been flag, because I have some pansy friends. =P lol. During the Winter we play Basketball, now that it's spring we'll prolly play basketball still, but we might throw in some Ultimate Frisbee here and there. Sometimes we might do a little dodgeball, and or kickball.. lol.

  17. #17
Ultimate Frisbee! haha... awesome.. Now that is a fun game to play on a beach.

Yeah, unfortunately there are no beaches in Ohio. haha unless you call fake beaches a "beach"...

So we just play in a field, our rec-center's turf field, the OSU Football Teams practice field, or in our Oval, Quad, Diag.. whatever you guys call your school's area.

Well I used to play some football, but then in new year 2000/2001 my good friend who was the goalie shot himself with a shotgun and after that I kinda stopped.

I also played floorball (unihockey, salibandy, innebandy, whatever its called wherever you live...) for almost 20 years, but then I got depressed and moved around too much (couldnt stay with my old team) and got too damn fat. So now I haven't played it for a couple of years and since I'm quite old already my best years are now behind me even if I would decide to continue... so that kinda sucks. But hey at least I got something out of it... ****ed up knees for the rest of my life probably!

So in answer to your question, I play nothing. Except online icehockey where I'm soon gonna be a world cup winner with team Finland. Does that count?

Heh. I took my friend to his mom's house the other day, and there was a bag of stuff for him there. Most of it was not his, however, including a Yankee's hat (he's a Red Sox fan, too.) He's going to keep the hat, however, and write "Suck" in either white out or a white pen, which I don't think exists, so it will probably be white out. Just thought I'd share. Anyhoo...

    Heheh... awesome!

I own 2 Yankee Hater hats (one is a beanie)... basically its like the NY logo (with the N and Y on top of each other) but instead it's HY and in the hats are in red sox colors.

I've got to 2 yankees games this year already (yankee's vs. A's) wearing these hats just to scream "yankee's suck"

Also white and silver pens exist.. they're the "gel" pens that every girl seems to love in the recent scrapbooking craze.

The playoffs are almost upon us!! yay!!! woooooo Pennant Racing!

The Red Sox are a shoe-in... even if they drop their first place division finish (AGAIN) they will get wild card (AGAIN)
The Indians are probably in, the Angels are probably in.. Good stuff...

the NL though.. man thats been crazy... Poor Kaz's team St. Louis couldn't get it started and then LOOKED like they were going to be a contender for the division and I honestly thought it was going to come down to the last couple weeks for them because the division has a horrible record.. but nope.. The Cubs and the Brewers (the CUBS out of all teams) are trying to see who is the best of the worst this year.

Arizona could be back in... that'd be cool... I was living in arizona when they won the 2001 world series...

    wooooo sports...

    oh and football started.

That's what I've been paying attention to. My Beavers had a really embarrasing showing out east against Cincinnati two weeks ago... They kinda made up for it against a division 1-AA team, but still... it puts a damper on my hopes for the rest of the season. I was glad to see them play better last weekend, anyway. This weekend, they go down to Arizona State though, and they've never won down there. Meanwhile, the freakin' ducks are looking really good... bastards. The Pac-10 season looks to be pretty tough this year... (as it is most years.)

At least the Packers are doing better than they have been for a long time this year. They beat two Eastern Division teams in Philadelphia and New York, although the Eagles played a really poor game, and New York... well, they're with out their starting quarterback, but I dunno if they're any good anyway. Meanwhile, the Bengals disappoint me... but at least they made former OSU QB Derek Anderson look awesome with like five touchdowns. Anyhoo...

Can the Packers beat the Chargers though? That is what we will find out.

49ers have the first 2-0 start since 1999. Hopefully they can keep it up.

Yeah, I don't know about that. Is that this weekend, or something? I think I'll actually get to watch it, since I actually have Sunday off this week... (not Saturday for the college games, though... ) Anyhoo...

Well I just filled in my picks for our little $1 weekly pool that me and my co-workers do. I picked Chargers over Packers with 10 (on a scale of 1-16) confidence points... I just don't see the packers winning this week

Chargers are tough.. but LT has had a slow start, maybe it's good GB is playing them now.

edit: I hate to admit it, but I picked against my team this week too with 9 points. I just can't see the 49ers beating the steelers... but i hope they do.

I'm glad they aren't in it, to be honest. I was hoping they'd miss the playoffs earlier than they did---I think they were officially eliminated on Friday. The team (read: front office) needs a wake-up call. They keep trying to get by with pitchers they pick off the scrap heaps around the league. Sometimes that works out great (Jeff Weaver in the playoffs last year was outstanding---terrible in the regular season, though). But it hasn't for the Cardinals this year. This off-season, they need to look hard at improving the starting pitching staff. Bullpen was great, but overstretched and overexposed with the terrible starting pitching and all.

It goes further than that, obviously. I think just about every aspect of their game has been off this year. I've seen more errors than I can remember. Hitting is remarkably absent in some games, then pours on in other games. The Cardinals have allowed double digit runs against in 20 games so far. That's a franchise record, and ridiculous.

But for the baseball playoffs, I think it'll be the Cubs representing the NL Central. Hell, the Cardinals limped into the playoffs last year and won it all. It COULD happen to the Cubs, but they're the Cubs. Something catastrophic will happen. If the Cubs do make it, I'm rooting [AL team] all the way.

Baseball is done for me this year. I'm looking forward to hockey season. I am not a fan of football.

They should get a pitcher from Oregon State. Like Mike Stutes or Jorge Reyes. Although Reyes was only a freshman last year. ...go Beavers.

...although I am disappointed in their football team's performance last night, after leading 19-0 at the end of the first quarter... *les sigh* Anyhoo...
