You must be underleveled, Try to be at least level 55 before trying to Northern Cave. If thats not the case then go back to the Highwind and power up your magic and find new materia. Hope this helps.
This guy is killing us... I know magic just makes him use Ultima, so we try not to use that... But we cannot friggen beat him!! For some reason we do not have any Gravity magic, so there goes that idea.... Any suggestions?

I don't remember having any problems with him, I mean he's just a regular opponent and he's quite easy to beat. I'm guessing that your characters are on a really low level but since you can enter Northern Cave you should have been on a decent level. Well if by any case your characters are on a low level than you know what you have to do ... train them, trust me there are much stronger opponents. Also there is no need for Gravity or any other magic here, you can easily beat him without that. But if you're really want to beat him quick you can always summon Odin or Knights of the Rounds.

by the time I got to the Northern cave for the first time I was in the 80's. lol
