    Gangster Rap/HipHop

Anyone here miss it? Sometimes I just want to put in Dr. Dre or some old NWA. "Rap" is so different now. It's all club hits. Rap used to be some of the best stuff to play multiplayer/online videogames to. This new rap stuff is kinda bland.

Aw for sure man, I miss listening to that Dr. Dre's Chronic/2001, Nas' Illmatic, the 36 Chambers CD from the Wu-Tang Clan, some KRS-One, and all kinds of other stuff. Rap that had good lyrics, stuff that flowed well, and yeah like you said before, that wasn't played simply because it had a good beat and hook, like that gay Soulja Boy shit that gets overplayed in the clubs and stuff. But sadly, people aren't making that kind of stuff anymore really because there isn't a big market for it. Mostly the consumer could care less about the message and the lyrics, which is dumb imo.

In my opinion, I think the general direction that the rap/hip hop business is going to go into more of an electronica/dance phase. Listen to the new CD's of Common and Akon for example, and Kid Cudi has the same kind of stuff as well. I guess it's a direction I'm more willing to accept then what is going on as of right now, but I'd rather go back to the good old days lol.

Yeah, its definitely electronica-ish now. Everyone's using voice synthesizers and shit. I miss people who were real lyricists like Gang Starr and Mos Def. I guess that era is over though, it's classic now.

Soulja Boy is a ****ing joke. He's a test of how bad something can be and people will still buy it.

BTW i love your avatar, deadmau5? I'm a huge fan.

Rap/real hip hop used to be the black man's punk.

Dr. Dre and Snoop are perhaps the only REAL somewhat mainstream artists who don't put shame on the name 'hip hop'.

If you know Snoop/Dre, then you must know Nate Dogg, right? He's the man who says "smoke weed everyday" on Dre's album. This man's voice is so sexy. I could jam to it, or fall asleep to it. He's just the coolest guy ever.

The rap has died long time ago if you ask me. These new so called rap artist only care how to bring nude bitches, bling bling and fancy cars in their videos and who cares about song text. As long as the music is OK they don't care what are they raping about. Many artist that were great before are now just piece of trash. That goes for 50 Cent and Snoop Dog, and even Eminem has become too ****ing boring. If I had chance I would ask Snoop what the **** "shizel my wizel, jizle, bizle" means. Every song that he makes now contains crap like that because he doesn't know how to make a great song anymore. 50 Cent is even worse, he made great rap song before and now the best song that he can make is with Justin ****ing Timberlake. I haven't heard any good rap song in ages. As I said the rap has died along time ago, and the only time I enjoy in rap is when I listen to the older rap songs from Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, even from Eminem and 50 Cent.

The direction hip-hop is taking is bad. With "artists" like Soulja Boy, Hurricane Chris, and Lil Wayne yes his new stuff at least is bad. Ayo Technology wasn't a bad song at all plus there were "My Gun Go Off", "Man Down", "I Get Money", and some other songs that 50's lyrics were really good. Have you listened to his War Angel LP? Of course my favourite rap artist has not disappointed me with his newer songs cause he is ridiculous; who I am talking about is Lloyd Bank$- Punchline Kid, Lamborghini Lloyd. "Officer Down" is one his best tracks and best diss songs I've ever heard. Also in regards to 50 and Bank$, on T.O.S they both have some very good verses, Bank$ more so than 50. What I'm currenlty waiting for... Bank$ next cd. He's as hungry as he was on the Hunger For More.

I also have to give props to The Game; I've been thinking about getting his latest cd, L.A.X, if anyone has listened to it what are your thoughts on it. Another rap artist whom I like is Obie Trice, his second cd was really good, great flow, beats, and complex lyrics. I have listened to much of his stuff but Ludacris is pretty good, along with Young Buck.

50 Cent is ehh. I thought his Get Rick or Die Tryin album was good stuff, but other then that it seems like he is just trying to make money off of being famous, and lost track of actually making good albums. I haven't listened to his LP though so maybe he is back stepping his game up, idk. Lloyd Banks and Young Buck? Don't like either of them. They're pretty much knock-offs of 50 in my opinion, just not as successful and they probably never will be long as they are on his label.

The Game I can appreciate a little more then the rest, because he seems to be very talented with his lyrics and such. All of his CDs I'd say were solid, but nothing really great though. The one thing that I don't really care about him for is how he approaches his way on selling CDs like 50 Cent does, even without him being on the same record label anymore. The Game hyped up his falling out with 50 and since it was such a big drama-filled story, it helped get his name out and make people interested in what he had to say. Stuff like that kinda makes him a sellout in my eyes, because if he really was a good artist, his CDs would have sold regardless. I don't blame him on using his celebrity status to help him make money, but for God's sake keep it seperate and don't let it influence you on how you make music.

In other news, I think Jay-Z's new album looks promising, and I wonder how many other artists will follow suit and be anti-synth in the records to come.

    QUOTE]

To call Lloyd Banks a "knock-off" of 50 Cent shows that you don't know Lloyd Banks; Lloyd Banks has a totally different style and is the best lyricist of the group. Banks is the P.L.K. and his style reflects that, look at The Hunger for More and you will find that it is loaded with punchlines. In the Rotten Apple he went away from that style with a few scattered punchlines, but now he is back on his "A" game and has matured and progressed as a rapper. He is about to release his fifth mixtape in a little over a year's time and all of them were great; the fourth mixtape was and the fifth mixtape will be double-cds. The amount of work he is putting in cannot be matched by any other rap artists and this is setting himself up for his third cd. From the songs that I have heard that I think will appear on the V5, his next mixtape, it is going to be another classic, here are some:

Lights Camera Packin - YouTube - Lloyd Banks - Lights Camera Packin [New/July/2009/CDQ/Dirty/NODJ]
    80's Baby - YouTube - Lloyd Banks - 80's Baby [New/August/2009/CDQ/Dirty]
Niggaz is Trash - YouTube - Lloyd Banks - Niggaz Is Trash ( prod. by Havoc ) [ NEW - HOT - CDQ - DIRTY - DJ ]
    X-Man - YouTube - Lloyd Banks - X-Man

Have you listened to his track "Officer Down"? If not you should and you will see just how great Banks is. YouTube - [G-Unit/G-Green] Lloyd Banks - Officer Down [Diss Resp To Rick Ross Push Em Over] (Best Quality)

I could make a huge list from his entire work of his punchlines that kill, but that would take time that I don't have right now.

rap back in the old days were great. Dr. Dre, Snoop, Nas, Bone Thugz & Harmony and more were one of the best rappers ever.

nowadays u got people like soulja boy and lil wayne who's raps are so played out yet someone like lil wayne is too overrrated and crap.

personally my fav rapper as of now is Drake! i love that guy, hes so sexy <333 i think he'll bring a new change to rap and bring it back to life.

Rap is dead, just like metal. RIP good music.

Sure all this new stuff is catchy, but it's not really that great. If they played good shit on the radio instead of mediocre stuff for one week, you'd notice a difference. The problem is all the good rap and metal have gone underground.

    right.

the old outkast, goodie mob, 8ball and mjg, ugk, no limit from 94-99, cash money from 93-2000 and triple six mafia the real triple six before everyone(including label mates) left.

back when dj paul and juicy j had a different mix tape every month. tommy-wright III. scarface, spice one, big l i could go on for days. there is no more social commentary in rap just gangster/Thug nonsense. if it came out after 2001 i probably do not listen to it.

the new stuff is catchy but it is all the same recycled nonsense.

IMO, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy (If you can even consider it "music" anyways) = Crap.

I used to love listening to rap years ago. Personally, I prefer Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, DMX, Dr. Dre, Tupac, LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, SPM, Common, and Jay-Z. If we're talking newer stuff then I like Lil Scrappy, Kottonmouth Kings, and Three 6 Mafia.

The thing I don't get with this current trend of hip-hop are the vocoders. Whenever I'm out with friends and we turn on the radio in the car or whenever I'm at a party where people play this kind of music, I realize it's being completely overused. I did like the vocoder in California Love though. Other than that, I don't really follow hip-hop as much anymore since I've been listening to rock and metal these days.

You guys want hardcore gangster rap, then check out Before I Self Destruct by 50; that cd is way better than Curtis and The Massacre. When he said it was his darkest album he wasn't kidding.

The beats are well produced with great variety that have catchy guitar riffs and piano notes. You will keep rocking your head from the killer beats. Some tracks don't necessarily fit on the cd but they aren't bad; the final song on the official cd excluding bonus tracks ends the cd good, not great - the song has a sad tone to it which fits the dark nature it is just not "gangster".

The first 12 songs are real hard though Get It Hot not so much, and I am dissapointed that Lloyd Banks didn't have a bigger role in the track. There is a Rapper's Delight nod with the song called, Gangster's Delight and there are a couple of other songs that seem like they came from somewhere - "Then Days Went By" & "Hold Me Down". This cd really focuses on 50 with limited guest appearances; Eminem is the only artist to have a couple of verses in the entire cd every other guest sings the chorus for the song they are listed on.

He's hungry and you can tell it in the lyrics. If you really are serious about wanting some great gangster rap, check the cd out - make sure to check out the bonus tracks too; Flight 187 and Man's World are the relevant ones as the Baby By Me remix is not that different and therefore lacking.

Used to listen to some Dizzee Rascal back in the day. He's ok.

Lil Wayne is...not anywhere close to his self proclaimed "best rapper ever".

50 Cent isn't shit either. He gets people to make good beats for him, but he doesn't ever say anything in any of his raps. He just spews out bullshit.

Agreed. I think that The Game was probably the best out of anyone from the G-Unit Records that came about, but he isn't even a part of G-Unit anymore because he is better than anyone there and he knows it.

But even saying that Game is the shit is stretching it. All of his CDs have been solid but not outstanding by any means.

Then again this one is kind of on the outs with me if she doesn't straighten up and fly right so that means I will be back in it for the thrill of the kill. Got some in the reserves. Even got a rePETEr (<---- like that ay? AYYYYY?) on the back burner.

Block: I do like the rePETEr except it kinda makes it sound like you're going to pork Pete. No homo.

What exactly are you looking for in lyrics? It almost seems like you are trying to have a different type of gangster rap. Also would you say what he "spewed" on Get Rich or Die Tryin as bullshit as well? What about Power of the Dollar; No Mercy, No Fear; God's Plan, Forever King, War Angel LP? If you find that too be bullshit as well, you may want to think about if gangster rap is what you are wanting and not something else.

I ask you: have you listened extensively to any of what Lloyd Banks has done? If so, then it would be clear that Banks is the best lyricist G-Unit ever had.

That's the thing. G-Unit is crap. Anyone can get on the mic and talk shit, that doesn't make it gangster. Lloyd Banks isn't even the best part of G-Unit. The Game is clearly the better lyricist.

I agree with Che on all of this while I dispise G-Unit and hate them for what they have done to rap, The Game is clearly the best out of them all. Real rap is shit that is actually happening like what NWA rapped the situatuion in compton at the time. I don't consider Lloyd Banks on fire or whatever the f*ck it is called rap. Rap was created by individuals who wanted to lyrically get their thoughts out G-Unit is crap and nothing more...
