So, I'm guessing a lot of you have never heard of this band, but they're amazing.

They started off as a typical brutal death metal act, but after their guitarist Paul Masvidal and their drummer Sean Reinert got a chance to play with Chuck Shuldiner and Death on their 1991 album "Human", as well as the resulting tour, they hopped into the studio to record something incredible. After a lot of setbacks (including Hurricane Andrew wiping out a band members house), they released "Focus" in 1993. What resulted was nothing short of an aural mindfuck. Here's some tracks off of it:

After the release of the album, Cynic almost broke up. They became "Portal" for a short time and put out a demo of some pretty amazing music. Retaining their progressive edge, they dropped the metal aspect almost completely, resulting in some very strange, albeit very interesting music.

Even Portal didn't last long, and in 1995 all the members went their separate ways. Paul and Sean eventually started Aeon Spoke, which is a compeltely different band. Aside from one or two tracks, they kinda suck. Too poppy. Anyway...

In 2007, something compelled them to reunite. This reunion led to what is easily the best album I've heard in years. Traced in Air is beautiful. It's heavy. THERE ARE NOT WORDS FOR THIS ALBUM. At least in my mind, anyway.
