    Artist/band genres.

Just an experiment. [These aren't definitely favourite bands or artists of mine, I just want to see how other people define them.]

As what genre would you define the following bands/artists and why?

    -Evanescence
    -Good Charlotte
    -Christina Aguilera
    -Marilyn Manson

Optional [As you may not have heard of them]
    -ThouShaltNot
    -Rasputina
    -Voltaire
    -Snake River Conspiracy
I've been on this site since 2006 woah

    Medolic Gothic.

Easy to define, uses a lot of different melodies and medolic instruments, with a Gothic edge.

    -Good Charlotte
Pop w/ "new wave" punk influences. The image is punk, the sound is less punk. Very pop, catchy. Not my thing, but that's how I'd define them.

    -Christina Aguilera
Pop with a light rock styled theme behind some of the tracks. And why? Well... you can hear it by listening to the music.

    -Marilyn Manson
Gothic rock w/ industrial influences. Reason: Same as above.

    -ThouShaltNot
Heard about them off a friend and listened to them on Last.fm a while ago... Found them very boring, although I listened to a couple of tracks, so I can give some insight as to what I heard.
They remind me of cheesy 80's rock. Synth, rocky... Electronic influences, perhaps? I don't really remember them too well, if I was being honest.

    -Snake River Conspiracy
Heard from last.fm by a friend. Boring, didn't like the vocals at all.
Rock with electronic influences. I could painfully stretch to even add ...dance? I don't quite know how to define them. Maybe because they bored me a little. =\

    Evanescence:
I can see a debate coming with this one. They're not goth. They're not gothic rock and they're not gothic metal. They have influences I've noticed from early material to their latest stuff ranging from a variety of influences from classical, rock, hard rock, nu metal, and minor gothic influences. The only thing I see gothic about the band, is the way Amy dresses. Lyrically, their songs are moody and raw. I would consider them "dark rock" if anything.

    Good Charlotte:
Haven't heard too much of their stuff but one or two songs years ago. I think Simple Plan and Avril Lavigne whenever I think of Good Charlotte. So I'd say "Pop-Punk".

    Christina Aguilera:
Again, haven't heard too much of her stuff either. I know during the 90's she was in the whole "bubblegum pop" scene. I consider her music pop.

    Marilyn Manson:
Another debate I see coming around. I don't find anything goth about him at all other then his image. Again with Evanescence, people think he's goth because of his appearance but the way I see it is only for the shock value which is why I consider his music, "Shock Rock".

    ThouShaltNot:
I can't pinpoint a certain genre for them. They're not entirely synthpop but they do have industrial and electronic influences like Chez mentioned.

    Rasputina:
They mainly use the cello in most of their songs. I can't exactly say what they are. If you've heard songs like "How We Quit The Forest" or "The New Zero" then you'd think some classical music influences. But if you've heard "Rats" their cover of "Barracuda" you see some rock influences. So I'd say, "Cello Rock" if anything.

    Voltaire:
I say Dark Cabaret perhaps. I played "Born Bad" in the car one day and my cousin thought he was country. >< But when if you've heard "The Vampire Club" or "When You're Evil" you'll notice the carbaret influences he uses.

    Snake River Conspiracy:
I love this band! They have electronic, trip-hop, and rock influences that can be heard with "Breed", "More Than Love", "Vulcan", "Somebody Hates You", and "Coke & Vaseline". I say they're "Electronic Rock".

Alternative rock, that DO have a gothic edge to them, like Chez said. Especially due to their image, but also in their music. Specifically The Open Door, and some Origin tracks. Though believe or not, they also have grunge influences. It's sort of like a Grunge meets Classical with major rock influences and minor goth elements. Not entirely grunge, but that's their influence. They grew up listening to it, and many other genres of rock, etc. And then there's Amy with her classical, Mozart influences too. It's unique and different, part of why I love them so much.

    -Good Charlotte

Typical genre that people consider them: Pop-punk with a hip-hop and emo edge.

    My general opinion: shite.

    -Christina Aguilera

Poppy...stuff. Bits of hip-hop, etc. Her earlier stuff was very pop, but her more recent stuff has hip-hop elements. Brilliant voice though. Not my thing, but very good voice.

    -Marilyn Manson

People always call him gothic. But I'd say he was a harcore, scream-into-the-microphone metal. Crunching. Bashing. Often anti-christ.

    Also shite.

    -ThouShaltNot

It's a shame with this one. Their lyrics are beautiful, but their music is boring to me. I can't quite pinpoint out a genre for them though.

Erm... Goth Rock, and like Faith said, there is Classical Influence.

Personal Opinion: I have grown to love this band over the last few months.

    Good Charlotte

Pop-punk, which is a little too... I can't think of the word, but "Meh..." springs to mind.

    Personal opinion: "Meh..."

    Christina Aguilera

Oh jeese... Hip-hop with a hint of Pop.

Personal opinion: A NA! Not my thing...

    Marilyn Manson

Goth, heavy metal, industrial... Kinda crap that makes your throat hurt in the morning. AND one killer headache...

Personal Opinion: ... He scares me...
