What is your favourite artist's live sound?

Metallica are always good live, I love the live version on Master of puppets with orchestra. In Flames are really good and Rammstein rules, the pyro and effects make everything amazing. Apocalyptica just own everything when they play live. They command the stage, the crowd, the music, everything which always comes accross in live recordings.

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

I'm not sure. I didn't think MCR were that good when I saw them live, although I could be a bit biased cos I've never really been into them...

Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

I'm not really sure, Rammstein are amazing when they play live because of the pyro as I mentioned, so when taking that into account their shows are so much better than their studio albums. But with live albums I guess Iron Maiden sound better on their live albums than their studio albums.

Which do you prefer; live acts or studio recorded?

Generally studio albums, but occasionally a live album comes along that I really live. There really is no comparison when seeing a band play live though, unless they just royally suck of course.

Well...yes, Evanescence are quite Goth Rock-ey. Though I believe they have an Alternative edge to them as well. And also, I think people usually label them 'Goth Rock' or 'Goth Metal' because of their image. Hmm...to be honest though, I'm finding it quite hard to assign them into just one musical category, myself.

Was meant to say this in my last post, but agreed. I consider them more alternative but their image tips peoples opinion over to the Gothic side. But again we could end up back at the genre debate again^^

What is your favourite artist's live sound?

Probably Nirvana. Their From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah was insane to listen to. I also heard from my mate Joe who worked backstage in one of their concerts in '92 I believe that every time they played here it was intense. Pearl Jam I like most of their songs, but some seem to lose their feel to great extent. Like the version of Corduroy leading their Live on Two Legs album.

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

For me to not be entertained, two conditions must be met.
The music itself has to not interest me, and it has to be dull. If the music is shit but the crowd is fun, that can often make a concert less than a disaster. Some concerts lack both good music and a fun crowd. Not the type of event I want to find myself at...

Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

I think some bands have some songs that sound a lot better live, but often they have more songs that sound better done in a studio. I also notice that a lot of lesser known acts sound better live than on their released EPs and the like. And some of the acts suck as Byron Bay's The Black Stars sound great both ways, but I'm pretty sure they know the right people who can get their EPs sounding spot on.

Which do you prefer; live acts or studio recorded?

I like them both for different reasons. If I want to chill and listen to my music, or just listen without noise pollution I generally prefer studio recorded. On most CDs, definetely studio recorded. But then if we bring actually going to the live shows into it, those are often a ton more memorable than just flipping a CD of studio recorded music on.

What do you think of covers?

Covers can go either way. Some are great, some are good, some are bad. Then there's Scarlett Johannsen doing Tom Waits.

Do you think that covers can be better than the original songs?

There are some. I was never a big fan of the original "Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners, but then Save Ferris comes to do a ska-punk version, and it's phenomenal.

What is your favorite cover?

Any cover Reel Big Fish does.

What cover do you think is the worst?

Did I mention that Scarlett Johannsen did Tom Waits? It doesn't matter. Scarlett Johannsen covered a bunch of Tom Waits songs. Didn't someone bother to tell her she was tone deaf? I guess not.

How much has your music taste changed over the years?

I like to think my taste in music is a lot broader than say, a couple of years ago. Appreciating composers like Cage, Zorn, Reich, and Zappa helped me broaden my definition of "What music is". I'm big into noise music, which most people would stick their noses up in the air and say "lol that's not music lol". I recently (as in about a year) got heavy into ska, instead of listening casually. That's all, me thinks.

What is your favourite artist's live sound?

****ing Dub Trio. OMG. If they come to your neck of the woods, go see them. Cancel all plans. DP has such an amazing guitar sound to begin with, but live, it's that type of loud that gets into your chest and you feel it in your core. They set their amazing sound by never talking. It's just song to song, only occasionally taking drink breaks.

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

I can't really think of a lot of bad bands to see. The only one that comes to mind is Queens of the Stone Age. Which sucks, because I like them. They bored the hell out of me when I saw them with Rage Against the Machine last August. By the way, RATM is amazing live.

Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

Dub Trio. Also, Slayer. I'm not the biggest fan of Slayer, but they put on an amazing live show. That almost makes up for not releasing a decent album since "Seasons in the Abyss".

Noise is always better live. There are only a few noise CD's I can just sit and listen to, but I can't help but get into it live.

Which do you prefer; live acts or studio recorded?

Live shows are unbeatable. Live cd's are okay (see exceptions: Dub Trio (Cool out and Coexist), Reel Big Fish (Our Live Album is Better than your Live Album), both of which are phenomenal). When just listening to music, I go with studio recorded.

What is your favourite artist's live sound?

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. Nothing else needed to say, jokes. Nah I saw them at Big Day Out this year, and it was excellent, a very good performance, I can also say that from the live Dvd's i've seem, Zach really gets into his performance. Also I saw Iron Maiden this year, and that was absolutley amazing, sounded better then before they got their penision

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

Operator Please. They were at Big Day Out. The only reason I kept watching was that the violinst was HOT!


Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

The Living end, definetly sounded awesome live. But I really think that most bands are either on par with studio or a little bit worse, the only way you can be better is through creativity, during the show.

Which do you prefer; live acts or studio recorded?

I like both, but I would have to tend to studio more, just because you dont have the background noise.

Weel I've been lurking around this club for long enough so I might as well get round to joining.

What are/is your favourite type(s) of music?
I'd say there are two main areas of music I listen to. J-rock and Metal. J-rock speaks for itself. I originally got into this music from Anime openings/endings and kind of got into them. I never figured out why, I just got into it. Even though I don't understand it half the time, it sounds good to me and sometimes look it up. As for metal, well I use that word to some up all the different genres I listen to. Mainly I stay in the more extreme areas such as Black, Death and Doom metal but I am a die-hard Trivium fan as well as or Thrash/Heavy bands.

Do you have a particular favourite artist/band? If so, who?
I'd say I have a few favorite bands but I'll just list those on my top list. Trivium have always been one of my favorite bands ever since I started listening to them (even though I prefer there older albums to the Crusade. Hopefully that'll change with the fourth xD). Also up there I'd say Agalloch and Dark tranquillity are there. In J-rock, currently, The Gazette and Maximum the Hormone.

How has music affected your life?
Music has affected my life in that it defines who I am as I'm sure it does with most people. If it wasn't for music I probably would have the friends I have now. Although this isn't entirely a good thing since these two girls are trying to make me learn ParaPara (Japanese Club dancing).

Have any musical talents?
Apparently I do. I'm currently the lead singer in a Death metal band which we've named Filial Cannibalism. To them I sound good but its others opinion that worries me ^^;;; I also write the songs for the band from time to time. Other than that, not much else.

What's your favourite song at the moment?
Probably Buiiki Kaesu By Maximum the hormone

What is your favourite artist's live sound?

ThouShaltNot, as far as live tracks go. Alex is, vocally, even more amazing live than he is in studio. There's something so unique and amazing about his voice that just draws me to him. If you want to listen to it ask me and I'll send a track >.<. You can't find them on Youtube or anything, unfortunately.

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

People here may not know her, but the Aussies surely will.. A girl named Stephanie Mcintosh, who was originally a soapie star, tried to sing.. She released a few 'quirk-pop' singles, all went down well.. Until she tried to sing live. It was.. Put simply, horrid. Abismal, really. It wasn't that she had an ordinary voice, it was that she plain and simply, could NOT sing. She was booed offstage, and it became clear that her first success was drawn from heavy use of autotune. She's not released anything since, other than a brief cameo in "The Bratz Movie".

Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

I did say previously, ThouShaltNot. But not really as a whole, because their precious synth work is basically null and void onstage, but Alexs' vocals are purely.. amazing live. Also, P!nk. Not my most typical music choice, but I saw her live and she was fantastic. Wonderful strong voice, and she just has this.. Energy.

Which do you prefer; live acts or studio recorded?

In the end, it all depends what mood I'm in, simple as that. Also, if I'm watching it.. I'd rather watch a DVD of good live performances rather than listen to a recorded track, you just get all that extra energy.

Their live shows are incredible! In my personal opinion, no other bands can even come close to them. watch some of their concerts on YouTube or buy their DVDs and you cant deny how they rule the stage. they sound just as awesome Live as they do on the record. so you know they're the real thing. its like they are actually feeling the music when they sing and perform. They have simply impressed the hell out of me. I wish I could see them live in real life!

- One of Godsmack greatest shows is called Batalla De Los Tambores. Have you ever seen it before? Probably one of the most powerful shows I have ever seen in my life.

Also, I'll sadly admit but Breaking Benjamin is really good live. they have alot of energy and their lead singer can sing live.

Who do you think is the worst live artist/band?

Easy! Fall Out Boys is the worst live band period. live or on the record. They are just so atrocious live. The only good thing seems to be the drumming. The guitar playing is horrid, and their lead singer's voice changes so frequently it sound like he's going through puberty on stage or something like that!

When I was stationed in Germany there was a group called Electribe 101 that opened for the Scorpions. They were horrible. We all cheered them off the stage when they were done!

I saw some of Rush concerts on Youtube and I was incredibly disappointed. I love Rush..but..they suck live..that's it.

Are there any bands you think sound better live than what they do in the studio?

I think some bands have some songs that sound a lot better live, but often they have more songs that sound better done in a studio.

Absolutely. However, There is a band called Forever the Sickest Kids and I really think they are good but they are even better live. They formed in 2006, their first show was in 2007 and its on YouTube. I think it's better than most bands that are like them who have been around longer.

I prefer the studio versions over the live versions of any song. It's just a bias I have.

I like what I hear - it can be anything type lol! But my tastes seem to be over with Rock and Metal... Add a pinch of Hip-Hop and you're there!

I have a few favourites... If I had to chose between Theroy of a Deadman, Evanescence, 3 Doors Down, Prodigy, Pink and Nickleback, I'd have to say Theory of a Deadman!

How has music affected your life?

I guess its affected who I hang around with and who my friends are... Once I first got into Rock, the friends I hung out with thought it was funny, and make little jokes about it. They thought they were being funny, when really it kinda hurt me - I was being me, and not listening to what most people were. One day, I was sitting in Maths, and Ella was sitting in front of me. We talked every now and then, and we became friends. I told her about Theory of a Deadman, she asked if she could borrow Gasoline (the album lol), and she didn't make fun of me because of it! To me, a friend that don't make fun of you for who you are is a great friend...

I don't think music has affected the way I think - well... Maybe a little... I... kinda helped with a pupil strike at school a few years back - it started a new trend on standing up to stuff at school too; there have been more strikes lol...

There are very few people who have heard me sing, but the few who have heard say I can. I don't think I can, though I do sound good every now and then lol... Certainly not today singing to Bring Me To Life...

I love live music. The best band I've seen live are The White Stripes. To be honest, I wasn't really looking forward to the gig; it was when they started playing I realised just how they'd got so popular on the back of albums that sounded like they'd been recorded in public loos. I can't even describe it. Just go and see them.

The worst band I've ever seen live was HIM. If I need to tell you why, you should not be in this club.

I love live music. The atmosphere, the volume, to be able to dance like you do to the album but with the artist there too...it's just magical. When I'm on the bus I prefer to listen to studio albums, but if I could go to a gig every night, I would.

NO! I really dont like greatests hits, greatest hits are usually not the best songs, there just songs that made the most money. I think they're quite silly actually. Except for making money.

I would say at least 11 singles so three or four albums, but the later it is made in the artist's career the better.

Frank Zappa has the market cornered in greatest hits. He was told he was dying, and so spent his last months creating his own greatest hits before the record company could get their hands on the rights and make their own version of his 'best' work. Respect the great man.


I own a few greatest hits - I only usually buy them if I only like a band's popular songs, not their studio mincery. The Counting Crows best of, Films About Ghosts, is the only album of theirs that I can just about stand or even like in certain moods. I don't think I own any other greatest hits though, no. I have the Cure's Singles album, a few Bowie and Beatles compilations, I think and Hendrix one too, but I am not sure.

I think they're a good idea for bands that are a bit pish. For instance, I don't think Oasis needed a greatest hits; nor RHCP. The Clash Singles CD was stupid and annoying, though it did make the better, more tolerable parts of Sandinista! accessible to the public. I still do not know if this is a good thing, or a crime.

I think it's a good place to start with artists you're not sure about, or ones you get the feeling that have whole album which will sound turgid save one really nice tune. The Counting Crows are a prime example. Songs like Mr Jones, Mrs Potter's Lullaby, Round Here, their cover of Big Yellow Taxi; all of these songs interspersed across a mostly mediocre discography consisting of utter shit like Amy Hit the Atmosphere and worse. So, their greatest hits is a quick way to listen to their good tunes, which are very good, if you're in the right mood. I don't want to be trawling through six discs of crap with 12 gems; I want all the gems on one CD. So I bought the greatest hits.

I don't think greatest hits are a way of making money, really. I mean, Stadium Arcadium seemed more of a moneychaser than RHCP's greatest hits did. Sometimes it's a way for long gone bands to try and pay the bills, but sometimes it's just convenience.

Not really. But they're good if you're only after a few songs by the band. Also good if you're a late listener. Like an artist you like's been around that long they have 20+ CDs, sometimes of varying genres...

I don't have too many. I have the obvious Nirvana and Pearl Jam greatest hits, Alive in Chains the essential collection, Offspring...
A few others.

Alice in Chains. It has all my favourites so I tend to be lazy and just listen to it. It's also a double album that cost less than some single albums.

How many singles or albums do you think an artist should release before doing a greatest hits collection?

Depends on the artist. Some have a lot more good songs than some other bands. I'd say at least 3-5 albums if not 10.

Yeah. it's almost a try before you buy into being a fan. You can look up the songs you like and fund which album they were from. It's invaluable with bands that have changed their sound a few times.

I don’t think there really necessary to be honest. If you like a band you probably have between some or all their albums depending on how much you like them. To make a Greatest Hits is to put together all the songs that the public like, not what the fans might prefer. After all, some/most songs the fan base like might not be on there because a music video wasn’t made from it or it generally wasn’t popular with the overall public and so decided to miss it off.

I have none and I doubt I ever will. I mean can you see bands like Trivium, Disturbed or Children of Bodom ever making a Greatest Hits? I don’t think so and even if they did, I probably wouldn’t but it still.

Like the above, I don’t own any so there are none I like.

I’ll have to go with Silver on this one and say infinite. Since it really isn’t necessary to re-release songs, then why should a Greatest Hits be put together?

No, I’d sooner point out an album where the band was at their best but that can vary from peoples opinion. I’d probably make a new fan listen to their first album or something to give them a real feel and what the band was/is but some bands change with time so I’d depend.

Anyway, I think it is a way of making cheap money and once one old time band/singer starts it then they all do. I mean look at Take That for example; they re-united after I don’t know how many years, then you hear the Spice girls are back with a world tour and Greatest Hits also. Now my parents when watching Five (if any of you know them as well). It’s just ridiculous and its milking their old and new fans of easy money.

Good Times, Bad Times, 10 Years of Godsmack. Don't think that really counts as a greatest hits album, but it's the only thing close to one that I own.

If I had to choose one, I'd go with the Good Times, Bad Times collection, as it's the only one I own, and Godsmack rocks.

Not Really, as the greatest hits, more often than not just tend to be the songs that sold best, and not the best songs. (I know plenty of Godsmack songs that never got any attention that are better than the ones aired on the Radio!)

In this case I do agree. Most of the time, the band hasn't really done anything new in a few years, so they just throw a new single or two on an album with 12-15 of the "biggest hits" (Most radio airplay basically) and call it "Greatest Hits Collection"

Either way, I would most likely say yes, but it is also a good way to see if they still have fans.

Nah. You don't have to have them. It's a good way to get the songs you like if you don't care for all the band's music though. Sometimes they include some extra stuff though, that's good.

I can't begin to tell you. There are dozens and dozens, hundreds and hundreds. Well, maybe I'll name a few. Los Lonely Boys, Queen, ACDC, Metallica. That is only a few, seriously I'm loaded with greatest hits, as well as mostly everything else they have made.

Hm? That's a tough one. I'll go with Queen's greatest hits album. Simply because I love Queen that much. Sorry about not mentioning the name of the album, don't remember it, and don't won't to search for it.

A decent amount. Four, maybe five. There needs to be a variety. Really a greatest hits album should be saved for when the band has retired, that way they can get them all.

It depends on the fans. If they only care about the radio songs then yeah, but if they want to really get into the bands, then they shouldn't get the greatest hits, they should start getting all the albums.

Well, in the age of CD players, they could be considered fairly useful. But in the age of media players and ipods, they're really become obsolete. You can make what YOU think is an artists' greatest hits collection...for less money... if you already have some or all their albums. Go playlists.

Well, at least three albums. I don't care how many singles they've done, really. A lot of songs on singles end up in albums eventually, anyway. Some don't, of course, but many do.

I guess. But, in the age we're in now, I'd probably just burn them a CD of the songs I'd think that they'd enjoy. Not what the public would think they'd enjoy.

It depends really. If an artist/band has come out with at least two or three albums, then I really don't see the point of wanting to have one out all of a sudden. But in a way, there are bands that are trying to get new fans. So by creating a CD with all of their greatest hits, then I see why not.
