Err I don't mean you coming from Norway, I mean were your views are coming from, I personally think the old school thing is a little over done.

The Witchfinder if you haven't heard it get Morgoth's Cursed album, its a classic.

The only genre that comes close to Black Metal's greatness to me is Thrash Metal, I need more.

  2. #2
Hmm, strangely enough I've never heard Morgoth. What the hell is wrong with me, I'll need to fix that.

I love black and thrash metal, more than most genres, but old school European death metal is simply the greatest metal has ever achieved on what I view as an artistic and musical level.

Black metal achieved almost as much but I feel alot was achieved outside of the music as well as in it, thus adding this aura of "realness" to it that I don't think is exactly coming from the music itself.

With thrash you NEED Sabbat's History of a Time To Come and Dreamweaver, if you've got those I'll recommend more

When talking Thrash, nothing can compare to Sepultura's old masterpieces. Arise is a work of art. I've been listening to that album for over 10 years and it still gives me goosebumps. Their older Death shit is incredible too such as Morbid Visions and Beneath The Remains.

A ****ing pity that Derek faggot came and ruined everything over night. But their old stuff remains and it will forever remain as some of the best music ever written.

    Frost, you forgot these bands.

    Dimmu Borgir
    Dissection
    Arch Enemy
    Dragonlord
    Katatonia
    Emperor

All these, IMO, are far better than any written in your post.

I'm not kidding when I say that these are the only bands in that list that I like. Mastodon are decent and The Blood Brothers are absolutely incredible, but no where near metal, thrash, death metal, etc.

    Post-hardcore tbqh.

    @dimmufan

D: Emperor and Katatonia sure, but ...

Just to put an end to this pointless bickering nothing you like is better than Pain of Salvation or Agalloch

True...if your a little 13 year old that wears make up and black baggy clothes.

For you I recommend Darkest Hour. Check out the song "With A Thousand Words to Say But One" and "The Sadist Nation".

You honestly think some scenecore bands could even HOPE to touch the two most brilliant metal bands since Black Sabbath?

rofl Black Sabbath is not that great. And your two bands you listed don't even compare to Black Sabbath. If you wanna go old school I honestly think Pantera and White Zombie/Rob Zombie is much much better.

Sabbath not that great xD. Sabbath is probably one of THE greatest bands of all time, even if they're not on my personal favorite list.

You've never even heard Pain of Salvation and Agalloch I'm willing to bet, considering the bands you're spouting off.

Anyways, Pantera is shit and White Zombie is merely passable, Rob Zombie's solo work isn't metal at all.

White Zombie was pretty good, however when Rob went solo, he shouldn't have even made any more music. He will never be as good as when he was White Zombie. And don't be dissin on Sabbath. They are one of the pioneers of metal.

Your right I haden't heard of your bands "Waking Child" till I went to purevolume and listened to them. They arn't hard at all, it's mostly just dark moody instruments, not much voice singing.

The only reason why Black Sabbath is so big is because of Ozzy, the music is meh but everyone liked Ozzy for who he is and his "I don't give a ****" attitude.

Music doesn't need to be "hard" to be good, infact it is BEST when it isn't (with OSDM being one of the most notable exceptions), and Agalloch would be RUINED if they had alot of vocals, as they're all atmosphere. Also it is quite obvious STILL that you've not heard Pain of Salvation considering that they are very vocal centric.

You're also judging the bands improperly as they can only be truly appreciated while listening to the full albums. Get The Perfect Element from PoS and Pale Folklore from Agalloch.

The music in Black Sabbath is among the best ever created, Ozzy's attitude has nothing to do with people liking them. You're a tool if you think that.

Masters of Reality is a masterpiece, Black Sabbath is to Metal in general to what Burzum is to Black Metal (Musically that is).

darkViVi - have you heard much Stoner Metal? I recently aquired Electric Wizard's Dopethrone and it sounds like something you'd like.

Oh and if you like Agalloch be sure to check out Wyrds newer Material especially "The Ghost Album", I prefer Wyrds more harsh sound but still don't mind their new album.

Their new album, Kammen, came off as really bad.

Yeah actually I listened to it once but never really got into it, Huldrafolk and Heathen are their best by far.

Black Sabbath is the greatest band in the world, and they are in no way only big because of Ozzy Osbourne. Just look at the latest tour with the Dio, Iommi, Butler, Appice line-up under the Heaven and Hell line-up. Lots of big venues and warm up acts like Megadeth and Queensryche. All without Ozzy Osbourne.

Listening to the new Deathspell Omega right now, sounds similar to that of Blut Aus Nord especially TWWTG. It's pretty good never the less, I might grab the LP.

Man, I just love that whole Doom/Black/Avantgarde metal feeling that Blut Aus Nord gives, something bizarre among the lines of Ved Buens Ende or Lamented Souls.

I shall check Deathspell Omega, but you guys definitely have to check everything Solefald, it's just disturbingly amazing

I can't get enough of Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde, I haven't listened to Le Secret much. Amesoeurs is great too.

I also may be able to get my hands on the Contra Ignem Fatuum EP.

The new Zonaria album's so good that I'm actually the top weekly listener of them on last.fm...

Anyway, I recently got into Runemagick. The earlier (more death than doom) albums are best, gradually getting worse as more doom elements are introduced into their music.

Old school DM is probably my newest sub-genre of interest. The Scandanavian stuff is by far the best. There's not so much decent American stuff, the first few Morbid Angel albums and Resurrection's only album.

Even though it's not old, the first God Among Insects album 'World Wide Death' is some really good old school Swedish style DM... very meaty sounding. Been listening to that a fair amount recently.

  26. #26
There is alot of good American DM but I'll agree that they have nothing on the Scandinavian DM bands. The two best USOSDM bands I can think of are Hellwitch and Insanity.

Don't God Among Incest have 1 of the guys from The Project Hate? I haven't heard GAI however The Project Hate was one of the early bands I heard back in like 2001 which kind of got me into BM... I'll have to check them out.

Right now I can't get enough of Goatmoon, Disgusting Raw Black Metal... exactly how it should be.

  28. #28
Runemagick is awesome and one of the few bands I actually consider worthy of the doom/death tag. They actually have a genuine Sabbathy doom metal vibe to their sound rather than just being death metal slowed down to the extreme. Both early and later material is good to these ears though.

I just read today that Kelly Johnson of the NWOBHM band Girlschool passed away a couple of days ago after a long battle with spinal cancer. She was a really good guitar player and Girlschool was a really great band. RIP

You guys probably aren't too appreciative of Christian music, but I feel you guys would like Extol's old stuff.

Their only song that would count as their old stuff from this link is Undeceived, so I only recommend that song and that song only.

The other three songs are off their latest, mediocre, thrash-influenced album.

Their old Melodic Black Metal (stuff prior to Undeceived) is worth a listen too.

    Christian music..?

    Are you for real?
Did you see the name of the thread? Did it say "The Holy Metal Thread"?

Anyway... apparently I am a music n00b also.. but can someplease explain what: NWOBHM?? and USOSDM...?
I suppose the M stands for Metal, I am just curious though...

I don't listen to much Death, Vital Remains is something I want to listen to more. Nile is excellent, Obituary is a morbid classic and my favorite DM band. Very good Death, yet some songs are almost more Doomish than they are Death Metal. Slowly We Rot is an album I recommend.
