I think that songs can/should be enjoyed no matter what language it's in.
    Erm, I guess it's 'cause I sing a lot ^^;; And err...I can't sing/speak Japanese for shit. And I usually like singing along and all. Although I wouldn't say that was the main reason...I guess I find it hard to listen to. I just can't get into it. But that doesn't mean they aren't good. It's just not my everyday type of listen. ^^;;

That's a shame... Although, to be fair, most of my music is foreign. I listen to a lot of Eastern European bands. I've even learnt various words of different languages through music... Not to say it's the best choice for learning a new language, but you pick a few interesting bits and bobs up.

I listen to one Japanese speaking band... Dir En Grey. I have to admit to having a love for a lot of their music.

I think the most important part of music is the sound. I don't usually care what people are singing about. Although I hate all this "LIEF IZ UNFAER. MI MUM REPYD ME WEN I WUZ 4 N MI DAD LARFD bullshit. And IM GUNA CUT MI RISTSZ... Y WUNT U SAAAAAV MEEEEE WAAAAAHEMOTEARS."
That said, the sound of the vocals is just as important as the music. If the voice is a horrible one, chanvces are, I'm going to hate it.

I'd have to say, Pirates of the Carribean has a very catchy soundtrack. As for game soundtracks, I like the FF ones when I can find them around that have good audio quality. (I've had music from a site that replaced all singing with random beeping, wtf?)

I hate how GTA san andreas literally forces rap down my throat. I even chose the rock station as my default station for cars, but every time I get in a new one there's RAP >.> They do have some good rock songs on there, if I can find the time to find the station instead of just shutting the radio off. My Need For Speed game does that, so I just turned off all music and just listened to my own sterio. It's pretty pathetic.

Custom soundtracks..... one of the reasons i got it for the PC

Yeah. POTC music was really good. I loved LOTR as well, i have the soundtrack kicking around somewhere on my computer i think.... i'll have to try and find it.

Yeah, SA does kinda have a bias towards rap, but then again the game is in that culture so i guess it adds to the overall effect of the game. Though once you get past it there is a fair decent selection of music available, though i got bored of it eventually and made play lists from my music

lol, for some reason i also love the intro music for "The Naked Gun".... i don't really know why

I totally agree with you. Believe or not but during my visit to Turkey, I fell in love with a Turkish song called "Çakkıdı" - " Don't even know what does that word mean" . I don't speak or understand Turkish but still a great song in my opinion. Great rhythm and beats.

    Check it out: [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmoY4g2X9fc ]

    It was simply a hit.

I have a couple of favourite movie/Game soundtracks..

-Final Fantasy X. "To Zanarkand" is beautiful, in my opinion. Soft and melodic and deep and lovely.

-Final Fantasy AC. Blends Rock and Classical beautifully.

-Moulin Rouge - How could you not love it?

-SUnshine - Underworld is this great, avant garde experimental band, and I'm so glad Danny Boyle chose them for the film. Also, the classical artist... John something :x, created the most amazing theme I've heard in a movie for a long time.

Worst game soundtrack ever: Possibly every Sims game.

Seriously. What is with that crap? I think it was composed purely to sound like undisgested shit rotting in the asshole of a squid.

I was too busy trying to see my Sims naked in the shower.... aah, the innocence of yoof.

Forbidden Siren's music (what there was of it) was pretty good and added to the overall effect of the game.... i have never shat myself so much during a game..... especially the brief fright you get when you are spotted

I gave up on that game after it confused the shit out of me. I don't think I got past level two. It looked so awesome and turned out to be the most confusing thing since Stephen Hawkins wheelchair configuration.

So the music was good, eh? I may Youtube it.

    Like Bohemian Rhapsody?

That confused the crap out of me. I sometimes wonder what they must have been smoking when they made those lyrics.

Who are "they"? Heck, i dunno. I was too busy getting high.

I must admit, for me foreign music has to be quite special..

With really, really good music you get the vibe and gist of it all without having to know the lyrics.

The very popular kind of Japanese pop/rock doesn't really do that.

I do listen to Aural Vampire though, a Japanese darkwave/industrial/very occasionally metal band that is just... Good fun, really.

I learned these songs before I ever knew what the words meant. As a student of the French language, they're an excellent learning tool. They're also excellent wee tunes.

    Voila:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=x5MkZekJ8PA - Paris, by Camille. Excellent song, love the horns and piano, very French. And the ending is just lovely. A Toulouse il a plu, a Seville j'ai trop bu, a Rio j'ai eu le mal de pays, oh Paris...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=cO5pt9uDiE8 - this is Feist singing Tout Doucement. Never fails to cheer me up. Such a nice wee tune.

I was originally the same. Then I listened to the Beyond Good & Evil soundtrack. The one that Ubisoft released for free download. Not only was it by some French dude, but I found it's also really good music. One of my favourite game soundtracks...

Erm...I didn't like her voice at all. Emilie Autumn, I mean. Very different, yes. But good? No. At least not in my opinion. Then again, I only listened to 'Let The Record Show' because the rest of them wouldn't load, but still her voice...no. >.>

To be honest, I tend to find the actual VOICE that seems to now go along with those lyrics awful.. The most irritating, to me. Think how Joel Madden [Good Charlotte] seems to sing now, and quite especially Gerad Way. Almost like they have a peg on their nose, very whiney, stretched out vowels.. Dunno.
    They also sound like they're being stabbed. ^^;;

Anyhow, I agree. I hate the whole voice of emos. Most of them are very similar and cliched. You usually can't understand what they're saying, either. Like these guys for instance...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVvwGmIINQw

This band is actually Welsh. If I hadn't already known that, I would've thought they were American because of the way he sings. They sound a lot like Fall Out Boy in my opinion...meenolike.

    Heres a question for you:

You like listening to songs by a certain artist in a language you dont understand and really love them. You then later find out the songs are racist, sexist, something along those lines. Would you still really love the song? Would you still listen to it?

Well, as i have said before, i feel that lyrics make up a good proportion of a song, and having said that, i would probably stop listening to that song or artist.

An example - The band "Cannibal Corpse". Their music style is right up my street, however having seen the lyrics to the songs that they sing i have refused to listen to them, due to the fact i find their songs disgusting and immoral. Go look up some of their lyrics and you will see what i mean.

It really depends on the band and the music. If I absolutely adored them, I probably would continue listening but keep the lyrics to myself.

Ah, Cannibal Corpse, I like them. They're repetitive, and they talk about shit, death, piss, sex and killing. It's disgusting. But you've got to love the cheesiness of it.

Technically (I seem to use that word alot...) they're excellent - no complaints. I could listen to it all day.

However, as I iterated before i don't agree with their decision to write songs about these issues. I was in HMV the other day and i looked at the back of one of their albums and one of the songs was called "Orgasm Through Torture".

    No thanks.

Ooh, P.S - Completely off topic, but i picked up "Suspended Animation" by John Petrucci (Dream Theater's Guitarist) today. It's his first solo album, and if you love guitar solos and instrumental albums then give it a shot, as i am listening to it now and LOVE it.

That was my first Cannibal Corpse song. Have you seen those lyrics for that particular song. It make men seem so weak. I laughed until I almost wet myself, but this happens a lot.

I actually disgaree with this. I don't need lyrics, to be honest. Sure, some songs do better with nice lyrics, but I personally find the music the best. However, with Bjork, it's kind of what you said. Her lyrics are usually misread for what they sound like. Most people don't even know what Oceania and All Is Full of Love are about. I find that interesting.

Have you ever listened to Rammstein? They sing about all sort of things, including incest, but it doesn't really bother me.

I usually do try to find translations of foreign songs just so I can know exactly what the song is about, but I'll keep listening to a song no matter what, unless it's a song that's blantanly racist.

This club presents a very deep quandary to me. It's not my habit, nor for many of my subculture to evangelize our sounds. Rather, our subculture depends/subsists on it's very uniqueness as a "best kept secret".

I'd be glad to find people on here that share favorite bands and songs with me that I can discuss. But I have that. Froggie and Fishie both like a lot of the same music that I do.

I suppose I should present more examples for posterity's sake. Very well. I'll start from the first building bricks of the Goth scene. Beginning from the London 80's punk scene.

Do you see how the Goth sound evolved? The culture mixed with the music and began to bleed out through independent labels(and Industrial and Metropolis labels). The rest is history.

^^^^Agreed. Lyrics make up a big part of a song in my opinion. They can show the direction and meaning of a song. You can listen to the music if you dont understand the lyrics, but you cant listen to the song.

Dystopia, listen to one of her Enchant era songs...

A lot of people don't like Emilie. The fact is that she doesn't showcase her voice well.. Listen to "What If" that I posted there, and you should be able to hear a totally different side of her voice >.<. It's a shame she progressed to some of the Opheliac stuff, to be honest.

Chez - I really like Bjork. Out of what you posted there, I think I prefer Oceania. She's... Certainly interesting. Just different, but certainly not without talent.

Sin - Haha, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" seems to be the most typical song from that genre in that era... So popular, never really faded. I don't mind it though, good band. I -love- Nosferatu, Faith and the Muse and Sunseth Midnight. That's the first time I've heard Anapilis, and I quite liked it, going off to find more.

Actually, that's a good idea. CD reviews, why not? I did a couple of CD reviews back in the back. My newest ones may not be as good, but I think I'll steal your idea if that's alright. I'm not sure if it'll give anybody any type of inspiration to listen to the music I listen to, but I'll give it a go.

My subject for today is a band that has grown popular in dark ambience, suicidal and depressive black metal and drone genres. Diagnose: Lebensgefahr is the one man project started by ex-Silencer member 'Nattramn' around 2004-2005, but the first official album 'Transformalin' was released in 2006. Silencer fans might expect something completely different from Diagnose: Lebensgefahr and may even be disappointed in the differences between the music they play.

Transformalin takes you on a journey through different minds in their own suffering. The lyrics are often of those begging to be tortured and transformed into new life, although other songs are accompanied simply by cries of fear or pained screams.
The album consists of eleven lengthly tracks, most of which sound mostly like pure noise or eerie sounds that help add to the atmosphere of the album. There are English and Swedish vocals on the album and most of these lyrics have been distorted to the point that they no longer sound human. The two songs that stand out as the most disturbing on this CD would be 'Transformalin' and 'Upon The High Horse of Selfdestruction', each of these songs menacingly imploring death and transformation as the key to some kind of a new life.

Another song that stands out, would be Situazion: Lebensgefahr but for a completely different reason. This song is the only one that doesn't sound as if it is meant to install negative emotions onto the listener.

I personally don't recommend this album for those who enjoy lyrics, because there are only a couple of tracks on the album with legible vocals. I'd recommend this to fans of darker ambient genres, drone fans and listeners of DBM and SBM.
