Anybody else confused about that new OnLive thing that was shown at GDC yesterday (or early this morning, whichever)? It's complicated, so I don't want to go into details on it (check IGN or G4 or really any gaming site for details), but I don't even know what to think honestly. It will either flop massively or completely change the gaming industry. I'm scared.

Anywho, to return from the cutting edge of technology to stuff this club is more about, I finally decide to buy myself something to play NES games (that isn't a Wii). It's nothing official, just some cheap after market product (and I mean cheap, part of it broke within an hour, but it still functions), but It's nice to have something to play ye old classics. I wanted one of those NES/SNES players, but they have SNES controller ports only (and even then I haven't heard that the SNES controllers work well) and I wanted to have the feeling of that painfully squared controller in my hand. The only thing I'm sad about is that my copy of Castlevania 3 doesn't seem to work. It somewhat works actually, which makes me think it just needs a cleaning, but I've cleaned it so rigorously already that short of opening it up and cleaning it from there (which I don't have a proper screw driver for), there's nothing I can do. Too bad.

Also, anyone who owns a Sega CD or has an emulator for it owes it to themselves to play Snatcher. I just finished it and it is without a doubt one of the best games I've ever played. It's a Hideo Kojima production and runs similar to adventure games like Monkey Island or Blade Runner. It's pure awesome, honestly and I highly recommend trying it out if you're into those kind of games.

Oh and I bought a Game Gear for shits and giggles. Cheers.

I am not even joking. Now I just need a Game Gear. And a trip to Jersey.

I didn't even know they made Battletoads for Game Gear. I'll have to be on the lookout for that. You can get Game Gears pretty cheap off Ebay, Cesar.

On a barely related note and so as to possibly stimulate conversation, I was wondering peoples opinions: do you think it's worth it investing in old consoles? By that I mean, if you already own a re-done or simply re-released golden oldie, do you think it worthwhile to buy the original for the original console anyways (which often may mean buying said console)? Do you need to experience as it was meant to be played, or is the experience of the game itself enough for you? Not you specifically, Cesar, but any cult member.

    Until now!

I prefer to play on the original console where possible. NES games like older Marios feel absolutely wrong with the Wii Classic controller, and though it could have been fixed by different control schemes like in Super Mario All-Stars, even then it seems not as right as it does on the proper system.

Even where it's done right and perfectly comfortable on a newer console, it's still not the same and I doubt it ever will be. The one exception is playing SNES games via the Wii's VC and using the SUper Famicom controller addon. I greatly recommend finding one before the damn things all disappear.

    This~

Well put, where-as loading up ROMs is a hell of alot easier then putting in the effort to walk over to my TV to power stuff up.. it really lacks that authenticity that you get when you get your hands around a control pad and button bash like a retard vs drums. A while back I purchased nearly all (maybe it was all of them?) of the retro compilations for the PS2 for Midway/Capcom/Taito but, it still feels like theres something missing.

The old Atari controller was like.. a stick, with a button next to it.

Trying to play H.E.R.O using a PS2 controller is awkward..

When I was like, 10, or less, I finished all the levels in that game within an hour - now I cant get past level 1 lol. >_< (note: I'm 25 now lol)

Still, I got me a original copy of Bubsy for my Mega Drive a couple years ago and it works like a charm still.. power it up every so often and try ace it. I'm still a bit sketchy around the edges but its fun all the same~

CP: A fair amount of Final Fantasy 8 actually, skilling up GF's for most part.. my first playthrough saw me a complete nub and dumbfack to the Junction system, so I've overwritten those old files with these new ones. Omnom.

    Oh.. and FF11.

Have you tried using the Sideways Wii-mote, feels like a natural fit to me.

As for the topic, well I can respect someone pulling out an old system and playing it on their TV. However if a game is legitly available as some kind of collection or digital download and it looks and plays as it should, then I can live. I personally hate having to deal with too many connections to a TV.

As for emulation, I don't understand why people like the SAI filter, you know the option to blur the pixels together in a garbled mess. I prefer seeing my pixels in games.

    Currently Playing

    FFV Advance
Samurai Shodown Anthology on Wii (Complicated with a tough learning curve, but DAMN! does it have one stylish atmosphere)

Speaking of SNK, I pretty much gave up on SFIV after a while. It's still an all right game, but it reminds me of why I migrated over to SNK games (namely KoF) in the first place. Flat characters, strict combo timing, too easy to rely on Specials. Damn I can't wait for KoF XII. It's just mouth-watering gorgeous!

I agree completely. Emulators bother me. A lot. It's nice that it's free and all, but blah. It's just too bad that old consoles these days can be ridiculously expensive. Shipping costs should be banned.

Anywho, I have some interesting news.

As you mentioned Snatchers some posts ago I dug around and found me the ROM, as contradictory as it may be after my post. I do not have a Mega CD to play it on so I got no real choice but to ROM it lol, but dude, its a frickin awesome game. As per denoted by this screenie~

    (note: its pretty gruesome lol)

    Was up till about 2am playing it and I'm still not remotely near 1/4 the way through.. the awesome part about it tho, theres voice acting on a regular basis. Sorry if I spoiled anything, lol. ^^;

You did spoil it, way to go.

It's just too bad that it's so short. It clocks in at around 10 hours, which I guess is to be expected of a game that's completely narrative driven, but that's the affect the game has on you. You just don't want it to be over. As usual, Kojima's characters are amazing and you really get involved with them. Gillian and Metal Gear are hilarious together.

There's a particularly hilarious part that talks about censorship in the game. If you spend long enough in the square examining the people, you'll find the number. It's great fun. It's too bad that they had to censor some stuff when they ported it out of Japan though. Originally, there were brief scenes of nudity involving Katrina and the tit of a downed snatcher, but in the case of the former, maybe it was for the best as she was originally 14, not 18. Those Japs...

    Until now!

I did try that Cain, but it felt too long and not boxy enough.
It does beat using the Classic Controller at any rate though. Made Mario 3 a lot more playable.

What I find somewhat amusing is that the classic controller seemed best for SNES games and yet I prefer to use the Super Famicom controller plugin as it's exactly like the older SNES controllers I know and love.

Oldskool? I just bought a new PSP with all the classic FF games. Replaying FF Tactics is great with the new anime cutscenes and new characters to recruit. Im still trying to unlock the new job class Dark Knight. Crises Core is good aswell, playing as Zack and finding out about the events that took place before FFVII (Cloud was a wimp).

Tonight I am going to the midnight showing of the new terminator movie. Hopefully it doesn't suck.

    Whats this!?

    Blasphemer~

My old save-file of Oblivion got corrupted so I started a new one, in tribute of Jin's favorite game . Made me a Breton this time and just managed to turn him into a Vampire ~ fun business biting necks.

But in un-related news I was sad to see one of my usual DS ROM depot go offline.. looks like I'll need to find a new source of DS ROM-ness, having fun with ye'ol FFIV on the DS but it needs moar! I got Settlers and FFIII a while ago and they are pretty fun to tinker with.

Work work work work work.. my back is sore ;_; gettin old like Scorp.

I know, for shame. I've just been kind of...blah lately. I start playing one game, get bored of it in about 10 minutes, have a desire to play another game, get bored of it in another 10 minutes and repeat. I think I'm just tired. I need a vacation.

A glimmer of hope though as yesterday LucasArts released some of their classics via Steam. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, baby. So many memories with that one. In non-old school news, I finally got my platinum trophy on Infamous, so I'm happy about that and I'm kind of sort of playing through my second file on Uncharted.

I've been playing Namco Museum Virtual Arcade on the 360.
And I think it might be what I need to sharpen my skills again as most of the games aren't too forgiving on the default settings.

Hey hey, folks! This is Ponk, making his semi-annual stop at TFF. Will see about sticking around a while, but we know how that usually goes. Nevertheless: Optimism!

So I recently did a 'spring clean' which involved swapping out a bunch of furniture in addition to throwing out maybe six month's worth of accumulated shit. I now have twice as much wall space and need something to occupy it. I already have these big 1-foot square canvas prints of friends and pets and stuff so I wanna do more of that type of thing, but slightly different.

Here's the challenge to you: I want to do a giant canvas print, A3 size or probably even bigger, that's just an enormosized sprite image/game image. Mostly because the problem with big canvas is image quality, and vector images or vectored sprites don't have to worry about upsize quality. I'm not sure what to go with though! Of course, you lot are the foremost experts that come to mind with all retro gaming issues so I present the question to you. Who/what to go with?

My top two at the moment are:
    - Mario, probably mid-jump on a coloured background
    - One of the vector style images (or one I build myself from references) from the Katamari games - I'm imagining a landscape canvas with the prince pushing a giant katamari that takes up most of the frame. Nice and colourful, pastelly or at least bright.

Any other suggestions? I welcome all comers. As for FF/Square Enix characters, who would you say is the most distinct or interesting in the Sprite Age?

Ah Katamari, just hearing that name gives me flashbacks of when I played the Simpsons game not too long ago. Gives me the shivers. Anyway I would go with the Mario print but with a better background than random colors. I say add one of those small castles with the flagpole in the background with several of the fireworks going off.

Now you’re getting me thinking of updating my walls. Anime wall scrolls are nice but prints look much better. There is an art school here in town somewhere maybe I'll commission one of the art majors there for one.

The sprite age I would say most of the characters from FFVI. Edgar, Mog, Shadow and of course the chocobo. With Enix I would go with the slime from the Dragonquest series.

    Bwu hah hah~

Yeah, soon as DSH scooted off and gave it to me it slowly decayed but I got the hell away from that place, not long after the DSH leaving / dumb**** Hobbes drama. Dont feel bad about it tho as this was long overdue.. how many mindless drones were there now you think? several thousand? lol

    Also - draw me some Sonic if your in the mood, the old school style not this modern GBA/DS/360 human looking nonsense.. man that style makes me sick, despite the amount of content in those games (due to updated hardware storage, etc) they really make me frown ; ;

Been mediating my time between work / FFXI / Supreme Commander / FF3 DS / FF4 DS / alcohol / Hentai / Porn. Ah peaceful times in Australia :3.

Oh fuck me, I disappear and KC comes back and posts?

Too much going on to really catch everyone up at once, so let's just look at some games.

I also like KC's "desperately awaiting" segment and might steal that for a moment.

This is mostly a post informing you of my existence.

Currently Playing, in reverse system age:
    PC/PS3 • Final Fantasy XI
    PS3 • BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
Wii • Animal Crossing: City Folk
    XB360 • Left 4 Dead
PSP • Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite
PSP • Dissidia: Final Fantasy (demo)
N64 • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    N64 • Mario Tennis
    N64 • Dr. Mario 64
PSX • Wild ARMs 2 (via PSN download onto PSP)
PSX • Valkyrie Profile (via PS3 with original discs)
PSX • Tales of Destiny II (via PS3 with original discs)
    SNES • Uniracers
SNES • Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars
SNES • Final Fantasy VI (NA III cartridge)
    SNES • NBA Jam
    NES • Crystalis
NES • Super Mario Bros. 3
    NES • Super Mario Bros.

If you didn't notice... lots of multiplayer stuff on that list. Rebecca and I moved all of my retro consoles out of my parents' house, and she's been wanting to play everything lately. Works for me, a girl after my own heart. ^_^

Also, gratuitous amounts of Dungeons & Dragons, as well as Magic: The Gathering.

It's almost ironic... almost all of my systems are getting the love right now EXCEPT for my DS, which is probably my favorite device out of all of them. Strange, isn't it?

And I suppose I do have a quick story to tell... that copy of Tales of Destiny II I'm playing? A customer of mine gave it to me the other week. For free. No strings attached. I was so helpful with her sale/purchase that she up and gave me the game even after I told her I couldn't take it into my inventory. Said it was for me, not the store, and then traipsed off to go sell the other old merchandise elsewhere. WIN.

    Anxiously Awaiting, in release order:
    PS3 • Madden NFL 2010, 14 August (SHUT UP I KNOW)
    PS3 • Batman: Arkham Asylum, 25 August
PSP • Dissidia: Final Fantasy, 25 August
    XB360 • Rock Band: Beatles, 09 September
    XB360 • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, 15 September

This list could go on through mid-2010, but I figured my next month's purchases would suffice.
