Sure I don't know if this counts but I have always wondered why only the first Final Fantasy game was released in America for the NES and then square did not release another Finalk Fantasy title until Final Fantasy IV in the US. My question is do you really think that America was not ready or interested in RPG's at the time or was Japan just afraid that they weren't ready?

Also many people tend to credit FFVII with making RPG's mainstream. Still I seem to remember FFVI being pretty huge with the people I knew. Do you think that FFVI played a role in helping RPG's become acceptable for release outside of Japan?

FFI wasn't actually that big of a hit here in the States. Sure, later on it became highly popular, but at first, it was a slight flop. Because FFII and FFIII were different, Nintendo and Square decided not to release them Stateside immedately. I think they had plans to do so at some point, but by the time FFI had even made it Stateside, FFIV was in production for the NES.

FFIV was quickly bumped back to a project for the SNES when it came around. When released in America, Square made the decision to rename it as FFII, so the American gamers wouldn't feel "ripped off" like they were missing anything. Poor decision, in my opinion, but it does actually make sense. I'm sure you know all of that already though.

To answer the question you presented... while FFVI did big things for Nintendo fans and helping to spread the love of RPG titles, FFVII really did do it on a much larger scale. The Sony Playstation was such a huge hit that when a FF title came out with the amount of sheer buzz and advertising as it had, it really hooked the crowd and a huge playerbase, which only spread when friends told friends how awesome the game was.

FFVII can't take full credit for jumpstarting the RPG crowd Stateside, but it definitely was largely responsible.

I wonder though if the great reviews FFVI got here in the states helped to assure Square that an RPG could do really well in the states. According to wikipedia even upon its release in 1994, Final Fantasy VI received a positive from most major gaming publications of the time. GamePro gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 score, while Electronic Gaming Monthly granted a 9 out of 10 in its October issue and named it game of the month over Earthworm Jim and Mortal Kombat II. Additionally, Electronic Gaming Monthly later ranked the game ninth in its 1997 list of the 100 greatest console games of all time, and when it was rereleased for the PlayStation, the same magazines rated it 4 out of 5 and 9.5 out of 10, respectively. For their part, Nintendo Power declared the game "the RPG hit of the decade", noting its improved sound and graphics over its predecessors, as well as the game's scope. Moreover, they suggested that "with so much story and variation of play ... fans may become lost in the world for months at a time".

Do you think that these positive ratings and great reception in the States helped Square decide that a project as huge as FFVII would be worth while?

Ah, now your question has a stronger point, and I believe the answer is yes.

Yes, FFVII helped make RPG gaming mainstream.

But yes again, FFVI showed Square what amazing potential they could have in the States if they pushed their games more. With the buzz from the existing FF players combined with the insane advertising they did, it pretty much pushed FFVII into everyone's laps.

Even though I don't personally like the game that much myself, I must admit that it did amazing things not only for the series, but for the genre as a whole.

Well. My copy of Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore for the PS2 just came in today. I played it a bit today. It's pretty fun. Not many characters to choose from, but that's alright. The game is kinda old anyhow.

I've also been playing Baten Kaitos. I'm on the second disc, but nowhere near the end of the game.

    Sorry if I'm ruining your conversation, just thought I'd post here since I haven't for so long. ^^;

Okay here is a strange question. Which system do you usually play FFVI on? I mean I have it on both Super Nintendo and PSX and plan on getting it for the DS when it comes out, but oddly enough I usually prefer to play this game on the SNES for the oldskool feel.

I always leave all my systems hooked to a television just incase I want to play an older game, which means FFVI is always available to play on either the SNES or the PSX. Still because I like the way that the SNES controller feels in my hands and how the game play feels on the SNES I usually play it on that system.

As long as I'm home, SNES. If I'm anywhere else, I play it on my laptop via emulation. I've got one of the greatest tools in the world... a PSX-USB adapter from RadioShack. You can use PS1/2 controllers through your USB port. It's gorgeous, and perfect for emulation of anything SNES age or older, because the buttons match up quite nicely.

So yeah, if I'm ever away from my SNES, my laptop's my safehaven.

One of these days, I need to restart my old OSCoK file on my FFIII cart. Maybe I'll just do it on the emu instead so that I can get screenshots and then we can alter the text to say funny things... yes... YES.

Oh hell, that should get good. Or ya know, I could just like...send ya all the sprites and we can just put shit together. XD That's always fun too. I wish I could figure out how to replace the sprites in the games tho. If I could do that I could truly customize our games. XD

I know how to go through the various ROM files and alter the information which comes up for them... but going into the deep detail about how to hack these already illegal game rips is probably something I shouldn't discuss. You know, forum rules and whatnot.

Maybe if we were all creating brand new games from scratch for the SNES emulators, then we could talk about it freely (because there's nothing illegal about that). Shame I don't possess the necessary skill to code an entire game from scratch. Shit, if I did, I would have started that ages ago.

Maybe we should make it the lifelong goal of this Cult to create a videogame.

And maybe I'm just off my rocker.

Seriously, we've had it wrong for a while now. Why the **** would we want to co-write a novel when we could co-create THE GREATEST SPRITE RPG EVER! I am so for that idea, you have no idea. I am on board 110.5% with this scheme.

Brainstorm session time, Cesar. We need a graphics whore and a sound master and we'll be set, really. Get a solid team of four and make gaming history with a breakthrough RPG unlike any ever seen.

It would HAVE to share similarities to Tactics, obviously. That game is brilliant in so many ways.

OLD SKOOL - A positive appellation referring to when things weren't flashy but empty of substance, were done by hard work, didn't pander to the lowest common denominator, and required real skill. Labour-saving devices, shortcuts that reduce quality and quitting before the task is done are not characteristics of "old skool."

In reference to computer games, refers to a game that had substantial playability without flashy graphics or eye candy. Old skool gamers appreciate difficult maneuvers, careful planning, and scorched earth policies.

In reference to role-playing games, old skool refers to games that tested players' wits, could kill off careless characters, and required dedication and inner strength to play. Old skool games didn't pander to the ideas that everyone is created equal, that all options are open to all races, that the markets were somehow free, and that a quasi-medieval society could have near 100% literacy.

Yeah, we do. I didn't put one in mine because, well, I was discussing the game I was playing. =P

But today is a different day, because I didn't really play anything. I have a huge list of games, and I don't know what to play.

Oh wow, a good ammount of posts have happened since my last.

Welcome maxpower; may I please touch your name?

Anyways, I'm having troubles gents! I've beaten Monkey Island (albeit using more guides then I would have liked. Note to self, don't stop playing an adventure game for more than 5 days, it's impossible to remember what to do) and for some reason, I don't feel like going straight to the second one. Oh right, because I like sound and a lack of it was bothering me. I looked for the third one, but I haven't found it yet, so until I do I have nothing to play and it hurts me (forgot to mention that my playstation and gamecube are at a friend's, so thus rules out a bunch). Maybe I'll fire the sega up soon.

Also, my laptop is coming hopefully early next week (A promise from Dell isn't worth much mind you), so I can finally start installing some games again. Until then though...help!

    Until now!

I too am in on that idea. My only question is how much of the game do we have to creat? I mean are we starting from the ground up? Or can I just like create a character and add in some ideas to a game that is being created and consider that good? Either way I'm okay with it but heck the second way sounds a lot easier.

    Currently playing:
Legend of Zelda oracle of seasons (game boy color)
Final Fantasy Legend II (Game boy)
    Final Fantasy VIII (PSX)
    Kingdom Hearts II (PS2)

Games on my list too play next (Thought I would include this just so people understand what kind o' games I'm lookin at.):
Legend of Zelda Oracle of time (game boy color)
Legend of Zelda Twighlight Priness (Gamecube)
    Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

    Ye-Gads! psiko! converted to Ninja!?

Scorpian will surely clonk you over the head for this one

But moving on, I was originally going to quiz our new companion before he could further step his foot in the door.. but what the hell, I'll still do it. Give you guys something different to do ^_^ behold for I shall combine this list with both SEGA titles and FF4/maybe 11.

    • Shadowrun on the Genesis, what common term did people acknowledge/casual chat to one another?
    • What does Super Tails gain? aside from glowing a gay yellow.. lawl
    • First title released on the 32x was...?
    • Do YOU have a full version of Puggsy? 'cuz I do, bitch! And why present this simple question?
    • Which game went on to make the most sales then any other title released on the Genesis?
    • How many Sonic titles were released.. on the Genesis alone? (not 32x, CD, SMS, GG)
    • There was only 1 game on the Genesis with code-unlockable adult/nude imagery.. what was the name of it?

    • Which 2 features of FFIV were a first for the franchise? (Hint: One is battle related, other is story/event.)
    • WTF is Kains deal? seriously..
    • Is Rosa more effective with Bow/Arrow or Staves?
    • If Tellah was an uber-mage, then, why is he missing 6 spells? And which were they?
    • What type of monster was immune to physical attacks?

Theres your list, bitch. (love you too Loco ^_^ ... XD.)

    On another topic that Jin mentioned, which Monkey Island are you talkin about lad! I've played a few of them, but never finished either. So hmm.. that reminds me, I need to whip that MI rom and give it a thrash alas the onry major hiccup to that is that - in Sega's wisdom (as superior as the CD version is to many platforms) they dont have a save option, yet, a password/code for certain parts along the story. I forgot to write the last one down ^^;

    Ahem.

Oh and Piro.. "Currently Baught?", whatever you were smoking when you managed to combine those 2 words into a statement, I want some. XD I mean, if you put in "Currently Playing!" I wouldnt think twice about passing it by.. but I must take a moment to make jest of your grammer.

XD wonder what kinds of explosives will be in the letterbox tomorrow eh?

And DISASTER!! Fuck me, I was psyched up when I got a *coughbackupcough* of Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion from me uncle back down south.. installed it post-haste only to be greeted with nothing but bright-white shaded textures with no animation. You know why? I'm currently running a ATI Radeon 9200.. which isnt on the compatible video cards list! .... NUUU! >_< I am overdue for a comp upgrade but I am getting some quotes from some friends back down around the Sydney region for a new case/beasty comp. So let us not lose hope! for I shall be playing Oblivion soon.

EDIT: Dont forgot to give my recent mugshots a visit, I'm sure everyone could do with a laugh. ^_^

..and CP: Does Rum & Coke count? .. no, well damn, C&C Tiberian Sun will suffice. Its fun aside from the constant crashing to desktop with no error prompts so no way I can solve the bug.. ._.
    SPOILER!!:

    ^_^

Heh, leave it to Dawezy to unleash a shitload of Sega questions. I knew he'd be good for those, especially since I've personally never owned any of the Sega consoles. I've played quite a few of their games though, and not just via emulation, either. Gotta love friends with various consoles.

That's how my friends and I always did things growing up.

I would always get Nintendo stuff, Matt would buy Sony things, and Chris would purchase the Sega consoles. Then we'd all just go to each others' houses and play the shit out of everything.

I see how it is. You know I’m a true blue Nintendo fan so you throw some Sega questions at me. Very sneaky!

    • Shadowrun on the Genesis, what common term did people acknowledge/casual chat to one another? Okay I never owned this game but my cousin and I rented it when we were kids. Really the only strange terms that I remember are that it talked about the matrix, the money was called new yen, and the used cyberware I believe.

    • What does Super Tails gain? aside from glowing a gay yellow.. lawl Super tails has 4 birds protecting him by hitting all the bad guys around.

    • First title released on the 32x was...? That’s a fine question (Did anyone own a 32x?) I seem to remember Virtua Fighter being one of the first games. Or maybe it was one of the good games? Also Doom for the 32x was released pretty early on.

    • Do YOU have a full version of Puggsy? 'cuz I do, bitch! And why present this simple question? No I don’t have Puggsy but that game is great to have because you can not find a rom that goes past a certain level (I think it’s five or six) IT has something to do with how the game is saved I think?

    • Which game went on to make the most sales then any other title released on the Genesis? Sonic the Hedgehog 2

    • How many Sonic titles were released.. on the Genesis alone? (not 32x, CD, SMS, GG) I think there were six?

    • There was only 1 game on the Genesis with code-unlockable adult/nude imagery.. what was the name of it? I am not sure on this one? Sorry I could guess however ummmm…… Shaq Fu?

    • Which 2 features of FFIV were a first for the franchise? (Hint: One is battle related, other is story/event.) Lets see this one included more playable characters than any before it. Players had conversations mid battle. Flashbacks in a type of sepia color, new moves like Blitz and draw, first game with moogles, controlling multiple parties, Desperation Attacks, are any of those what you were looking for. What can I say Final Fantasy VI was an innovative game.

    • WTF is Kains deal? seriously.. I like Kain he seemed to be like hypnotized or something and who doesn’t try to kill their friends when they are hypnotized. As a side note I use to play FFIV at my cousins house all the time he would always name the Cecil character after him and I would always be Kain.

    • Is Rosa more effective with Bow/Arrow or Staves? I always had her use a bow and arrow because I like to place her in the back row.

    • If Tellah was an uber-mage, then, why is he missing 6 spells? And which were they? They were White, Quake, Weak, Fatal, Nuke, and Meteo. I am not positive but I think that he can not use any of these because of how many magic points they take. Tellah can never get above 90 magic points until he “leaves” your party and each of these spells take above 25 magic points.

•What type of monster was immune to physical attacks? Those darn Jellies!

I hope I was close on those.

*points at the 4 in FFIV*

Though, if the question had been about FFVI, that would have been a great answer. And, if you're wondering why you were grilled on the Sega content, it's because I specifically asked Dawezy to do it. Hey, you're the one who told me you "jumped to every system since" the Atari 2600.

    In any case, jolly good show, and a good effort on all of the questions. I honestly couldn't tell you if all of the Sega ones were correct or not... I know a couple that aren't for sure, but then again, I doubt I could have answered most of those myself, at least not without researching them. ^_^;;

Also, on the note of Excitebike, last night ZRO and I were looking at one of the early release titles for the Nintendo Wii, Excite Truck. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH DETAIL ON A VEHICLE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. The Wii is going to be one hell of a sexy console. *inner Nintendo fanboy gleams*

Though, if the question had been about FFVI, that would have been a great answer. And, if you're wondering why you were grilled on the Sega content, it's because I specifically asked Dawezy to do it. Hey, you're the one who told me you "jumped to every system since" the Atari 2600.

    In any case, jolly good show, and a good effort on all of the questions. I honestly couldn't tell you if all of the Sega ones were correct or not... I know a couple that aren't for sure, but then again, I doubt I could have answered most of those myself, at least not without researching them. ^_^;;

Well crappy for some reason I just get in this thread and I automatically think FF VI. Anyhow how about Active Time Battle and I'm totally guessing on this one but a main character that dies?

I would like to say that having Sega questions was fun! I am also impressed with your knowledge in just the questions you asked. I’ll play that game anytime. Thanks.

Alrighty, time for some answers children

    - Shadowrun, they constantly said "Chum".
    - Last I played through with all the Emeralds, Super Tails got 2 birds not 4.
    - Virtua Racing was first out on the 32x, Virtua Fighter wasnt far off that too.
    - That damned Puggsy rom, every single copy on the net is what they call a public domain copy. Like a demo if you will, only does the 1st "world" for you then stops your gameplay. ; ;
    - Sonic 1, 2, 3, S&K, Spinball, 3D ... and a few spinoffs; Special Stages, Classics (3 in 1 thing) and S&K with Sonic 1 2 3 cart attached.
    - Rings of Power, was an Ultima-esque rpg/scroller made by "Naught Dog software" so its easy to assume there is SOME adult content somewhere lol.

    Now for FFIV..

    - The 2 main standouts were; 5 people in battle, there hasnt been a FF title since that has had 5 people on the screen at once.. usually 3 or 4, with the exception of 11 since you can form groups from 6 to 18.
And, FFIV was the first FF to feature an actual game character DIE.
    - Kain was a jackass, lol.
    - Bow & Arrow was more effective on Rosa, more-so because of her "AIM" option in battle.. 100% accuracy. Staves work out cheaper, but dont throw out as good dmg.
    - Was 5 spells, he still learns Weak/Tornado, may have been taken out of FFIIUS tho I forget.
    - Those *damn Jellies.

    Hehe.

I must consume some breakfast this early morn! Saturday, I should still be sleeping bleh.
    SPOILER!!:

Fine, I'll revert to his FIRST class and use the Thief. Ninja is so much cooler, though...

And besides, my Sprite representation will ALWAYS be the Red Mage, so it isn't like I was trying to step on your territory, I was just wanting to spread my love for Seiken Densetsu 3 by having the coolest character in the game for my Avy for a while. Hawk give l33t new definition. Why the **** would anyone want to take him down the path of light to be a sissy Ranger when you can go dark and become Ninja Master or Night Blade (The picture is the Night Blade form)? It just makes no sense at all!

I suppose I could always put the hottie Angela in there. Go Sorceresses!

Well, seeing as there is already a Secret of Mana 1 comic out there (manatheater.com, check it out, yo!), I'm thinking of making a comic for Secret of Mana 2. Aka Seiken Densetsu 3. My party right now is Angela, Kevin, and Duran. Psiko got me hooked, yo.

Dunno bout all that...but yesterday we lost the most famous Australians out htere, Mr Steve Irwin. Sucks cause I always liked the guy, was an upfront lunatic XDD You'll be missed bud...though now what do we do about the Infamous Beebo Episode 2? I have a suggestion and I want you guys to run with it heh..I suggest inserting a still alive and almost as famous ( and much more infamous ) Aussie into the mix. I myself have VERY amateurishly done so XD clean it up a bit XDD

Heh, very sad (in a sense) week for the Australian community in general.. as stated by the Scorpmiester Steve "Crikey!" Irwin managed to piss off a Stingray and get impaled through the chest. Not directly through the heart (as everyone will moan on about) but slightly off side - it was more the venom potency on the stingers of those bastards that did him in. Its some NASTY shit that eats/decays flesh as fast as it stings ya.. so you can imagine that Steve would have had quite a painful few seconds before he passed out and eventually croaked.

It upset me, and the rest of the Auzzie public quite alot actually..

Was like.. losing a family member you know? On a personal level I found his over-the-top antics to be a real pain in the ass, but you know what? thats what made him such a fucking champion! he was so charasmatic and passionate about his work and didnt change for ANYONE/THING.

Down at Australia Zoo there be a shrine of rememberence being constructed.. and you know what? I think I'll try make my way down there for myself and say Crikey to the crazy bastard..

    Oshi- ... I got a tear.. ; ;

Almost a week later we lost another legend... >_<

Peter Brock, he was known as "King of the Mountain". Why? in Australia we have a yearly V8 tournament around the "Bathurst" track - he won 8 consectutive runs (plus some heap of other racing tourneys) and has done a whole heap of work on and off the track. It was more insulting because he got messed up in a car wreck on a CHARITY RACE. >_>; Or atleast I think thats what it was, hmm.. was an event using revamped semi-vintage cars back from the 70-80's.

    Sigh.

Australia has seen better days eh?

On the gaming front, been digging into the old Curse of Monkey Island on Sega CD. And my usual FF11 whoring, if I was paid to play this game I'd be a multi-millionare by now, damn. XD

    ..Crikey motherfucker!

This club is over four years old, albeit not this specific thread.

And with that, I must decline. You haven't been on the forums long enough, and many of your posts are still rather spammish.

If you can make the dedication to post in the FFVI forum and the other older FF forums, and put some more time and thought into your posts... then maybe we'll reconsider you later. But for now, I'm sorry, it's a definite no.

...Erm.. this isn't a normal club, yo. You can't just join out of nowhere. We have to ask you some questions, and depending on the answers, and if we like you or not, we may let you in.

I say we, but it's mostly Lococolt, Dawezy, and Dau.
And well.. I personally don't like you, but that's just me.

And actually, you've been here for 3 months, but who's counting anyway.

But anyway.. who wants to let him in?

I am cool with it... but I am still a Kefka cult n00b... so.... yeah.

I finally got my hands on an original copy of Shining Force 2 for my mighty Genesis, and let me tell you, I missed this puppy...

Its a little on the generic side as far as story goes, but its still my favorite tactical RPG of all time. FFT blows ass as far as this game goes. ( Just my opinion ) I havent been able to shut this thing off for like a week. My only failue was that I promoted my force too early, and now the game is hard as hell....

Oh well. Still a good time.

Hey I just grabbed a game on-line that is pretty old school and very under rated! Has anyone ever played the game Poy-Poy? It is perhaps the strangest game I have ever played. You go around and throw rocks and rockets at each other. It is the best multiplayer game that I have found on the PSX. I crack up every time I hit one of my buddies in the head with a rock and their player dies.

oh my, it's been a while since I posted.

Just finished playing FFIV, jeez I love that game. Not as much as VI, but it's definatly in my top 10.

Now I'm playing Lego Star Wars. Not the new one, but the one that came out last year. Definatly one of the best Gamecube to come out in the last year or so. After this it's on to the new Lego Star Wars....
