I agree! You have to point out where your logic lies or they'll just think you're lazy. Something along the lines of 'I apologize for not getting this done, but in light of my hours being cut, I thought I shouldn't stay past my scheduled time.' That also kind of makes it sound like you were more thinking of them and their needs than your own.
