I have a feeling that Ansem kind of had to improvise with Riku's desire to become the Keyblade Master and use him to try and stop Sora. Let's face it, the more time Ansem had to destroy worlds, the more power he received. Imagine if he had managed to delay Sora and destroyed another few worlds - would Kingdom Hearts have still ended the same way?
