The reactor can explode, like any other high energy producing power source when damaged and overheated, but power plants aren't equipped to be WMD's. If the reactor explodes, it will release high amounts of radiation. It won't be like a thermonuclear bomb detonating.

From the reports, I've heard that the container housing the reactor was not damaged in the explosion, so if the reports aren't lying, the reactor itself is in tact, and radiation levels are returning to non-hazardous levels.

Those reports are probably just to calm the public, though. Most likely, the explosion caused the leak of uranium to expand, but we'll see.
