Not only is it Sony's longest running franchise it also the most f***'n awesome car brawl game ever(my opinion of course). Anyways, getting down to business my most favorite Twisted Metal is hands down "Black". The game was one of the first ps2 games that I ever played and pretty much was the reason that I purchased the system(that, FFX, and Tekken:Tag Team). It was more fast paced than the previous games in the series and joyfully dark. You can't beat the Sweet Tooth story. Twisted Metal 2 and 4 are next in line because they are the first that I ever played and between nostalgic value and pure awesomeness I have them to thank for still playing the series as faithfully as I do. I have never played the first one, but I just recently ordered it on ebay. As far as Twisted Metal 3 goes, I remember buying it in like 1999 and taking it back to get Resident Evilirectors Cut(solid exchange by the way). Twisted Metal:Small Brawl was pretty cool and like most people say it is pretty much what would happen if Pixar made a Twisted Metal. Lastly, there is Head On which felt more like an expansion to Black but was still just as much fun.

Twisted Metal III will always be my favourite. Aside from the best soundtrack (made up Rob Zombie and Pitchshifter songs), it had the most awesome stages, cars and weapons. I used sit and play this with my brother for hours on end.
I have only really played Twisted Metal II and Black, but III beats them by a mile.
I was a pretty big fan of the first TM game, and black. Both had their pro's and con's, but both were overall pretty good games. The 3rd was ok, but not of my favorites.
MY last TM was IV but my favorite by far was III, the cars were awesome, the levels were the best and I always used the guy with the Viper but I can't remember the characters name for the life of me.

Mine is Twisted Metal 3 or 4. Not a lot of people played 4, but it was pretty damn good.
