First off, Faris and Leila weren't lame and they were pirates. Argh. But before bashing Nomura or anyother artist for creating androgynous characters, Amano is far worse in doing that to his males than the other characters. Another thing, I hear/see a lot of people complain about some Final Fantasy characters being too androgynous, well here is a story for ya: my friends and I entered a Barnes and Noble and went by the gaming section. There we saw a strategy guide for Magna Carta: Tears of Blood, one of my friends, Jistune who is a lesbian, noted that she liked or thought the girl on the cover was hot/sexy. (the cover for the strategy guide is the same for the boxart of the game).
So we made a comment about it and Jitsune said not the girl in yellow but the one in white. If anybody here has played the game they would know that the "girl" in white is really a guy and his name is Calintz. Hyung-tae Kim the artist for the game sometimes has his males being mistaken for females. A lesbian thought that Calintz was a female, got it. So before whining about how certain FF characters are too androgynous remember what my friend Jitsune thought.
