As I've said in a different thread I've started FF9 again and it's reminded me that it has my favourite system of all the FFs (well 1-12)

I love having 4 characters in a party, having defined classes but the ability to customise/learn abilities using weapons and synthesising new equipment from old stuff.

The only downside is the trance system which is a poor mans limit break IMO.
