Rango
So I kinda got bored tonight-friends not answering texts, certain individuals not being on MSN, people not responding to my thread with a ridiculous title in the music forum-so I decided to go see this. Ebert loved it. I thought it was pretty awesome, too. Great, imaginative art direction and character design. All the critters looked really interesting; like caricatures of old west characters crossed with mice, cats, birds, etc. The jokes were kinda hit or miss, although there weren't really any that made me cringe, nor did they immediately render themselves dated by being pop culture references (to my recollection.) I liked that there was violence and mild swearing. That gave it a kind of 80's feel, when cartoons tried to make kids feel grown up by watching something that had an "edge" to it. That's right; characters actually get shot and die in this, and they say words like "damn" and "hell," too! Would've made me giggle with glee when I was a kid. I'm glad this movie seems to be doing so well at the box office.
Oh, and the voice acting was all top-notch, and includes Bill Nighy, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Abigail Breslin (the girl from Little Miss Sunshine and Zombieland) and of course, Johnny Depp as the titular character. Anyhoo...
