Something that really pisses me off.

What's really been pissing me off lately is when people say season's greetings or happy holidays instead of happy Christmas, it's been like that for hundreds of years why the hell are people trying to change because it offends some other people ****ing hell man what's this world coming to, how the hell can that offend anyone unless they like stirring shit up to **** this world up more than it already is.

It isn't that people get offended by someone saying 'Happy Christmas', but it doesn't make them feel included. That's the key factor there. We want people of many different cultures to feel included in our society because there is a lot to gain from listening to the minority and celebrating differences. Say 'Happy Christmas' if you want, but I wouldn't take it so personally that others say 'happy holidays', it's just a way to show respect to all those around them

Happy Holidays sounds better. Also some people don't celebrate it.

Happy Holidays is ok. It's a more general term, because some people have holidays around this time of year. I don't see why you're so pissed about that. Doesn't seem worth it. And isn't it usually Merry Christmas?!

Re: Something that really pisses me off.

It's not so much of an offence thing. At school, I still wrote out cards to my Muslim classmates, and they appreciated them just as much as anyone. I'm an atheist, so they may have seen it differently from that perspective, but I doubt it. Would it piss you off if a non-Christian celebrated Christmas for non-religious reasons?

Also, Christmas is a seasonal holiday. So both statements "Seasons Greetings" and "Happy Holidays" are correct. People don't tend to say that in the middle of summer (ours in England, at least) because it's not festive.

In my opinion, it's the people who celebrate Christmas who take the most offence from it. Same with any other holiday during the year. That pisses me off.

I think a majority of the Christmas celebrating population fall under that category to be honest with you. Does it piss me off? No, I know why I celebrate the holiday, I don't really care why anyone else does.

This is kind of related, but a cousin of mine is a school teacher in Virginia - she called my grandmother the other day all upset because she was told that she wasn't allowed to decorate her classroom for Christmas. She also wasn't allowed to have a class discussion about the holiday unless she held a discussion for the other holidays that are celebrated around this time of year: Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

Honestly, I understand the whole stipulation in regards to the discussion bit, but I think it's stupid that she can't decorate her classroom.

PS- This is off topic, but it pisses me off that they took out "one nation under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance.

I'm like, so non-conformist that I like don't even say 'seasons greetings' or 'happy holidays' because like, that even conforms me, which I'm like, not comfortable with and, like, instead of saying that, when someone says happy christmas to me I just like, say like, 'hello' back to them ... instead of happy holidays. here's a picture of me saying this. it was taken on my iphone that I bought with my uni grant:

I always say "Happy Holidays" to people, but only if I don't know what holiday they celebrate. It's a way to make sure you don't look like a fool for getting their religion wrong. Plus, anymore you have to be PC, or else you get sued/arrested/both for discriminating against someone.

I rarely ask what Holiday they celebrate, because to me it's like asking who a person voted for or how much money they make. It's just one of those questions you don't ask.

Oh I didn't know that. I thought it was Merry Christmas everywhere. Thanks for clearing that up.

Really at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what you say, as long as it's from the heart. I know that's real corny, but it's true.

    So you're an idiot.

What pisses me off is when people attempt to explain how the phrase "happy holidays" is general, whereas "merry Christmas" is selective to a particular group of people. I don't like that people feel the need to include all groups of people in everything. Sometimes, people need to be excluded in order for them to learn their place.

Take women, for example. They complained until they were given freedom in America, yet still the only place they're useful is in the kitchen and in the bedroom. They haven't learn their place because of "equality."

People can say whatever they want. You can say "Happy Holidays" to me, or if you say "Merry Christmas" to me, I'll probably be like "Yeah, you too." I don't care. Most likely, I personally will not even bring the holidays up, unless something makes me feel so inclined. I am lazy, I guess.

However, I am more likely to say "Merry Christmas," regardless of who it is, because I don't care. I'm wishing you well, so take the well wishes, damn it. Anyhoo...

Christmas was never a pagan holiday. Yule is the pagan holiday, a lot of traditions that Christians have in regards to Christmas stem from that holiday, but Christmas is solely a Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

There's a huge difference between a pagan celebration close to the same time as Christmas and Christmas itself being a pagan holiday. So please stop claiming that you know more about Christianity than Christians do.

    Exactly.

This was me and the check-out girl, the other day at Wal-Mart:
    "Merry Christmas."
    "I'm not Christian."
    "Happy Hannukah."
    "I'm not Jewish either."
    "Then I don't care." Out.

Really -- the entire point of "Season's Greetings" and "Happy Holidays" was so that people who don't celebrate Christmas wouldn't feel "offended". The way I see it, if you're offended by somebody telling you to have a good day, screw you. And there are prettymuch three types of late-December celebrations: Hannukah, for Jewish people; Kwanzaa, for stupid people; and Christmas, for people who believe in Jesus and people who get together and trade gifts once a year. The latter covers the vast majority of Americans, whether they are Christian or not.

This reminds me of a South Park episode. I wish I could remember which one but it's all about how everyone seem to accept a minority's views no matter how wrong/ridiculous they are just because they are afraid of offending them and being called a racist/hater/etc.

Re: Something that really pisses me off.

I think what the OP is annoyerd about is the fact that the media tell us that we can't say "Merry Christmas" because of "political correctness". Around this time of year, the media, especially right wing press such as the Daily Mail (moar liek Daily Fail, amirite? :] ) are full of stories about local government authorities and private companies saying to their representatives and/or employees: "You can't say 'Merry Christmas' as this might offend non-Christians, blah blah blah..."

There was a STUPID story a couple years back, apparently a council in Birmingham had taken to calling Christmas "Winterval" in a bid to stop 'offending' people. When I read this I was like "Oh FFS! " but later on I learnt that this report was untrue.

So, I say; say what you want, it doesn't bother me.

Although I am atheist, I much prefer saying merry xmas as opposed to happy holidays, but thats because to me xmas is the time of year that the family gets together, and I dont mind the christian connotations of xmas either.

Although I wouldnt frown upon someone saying happy holidays, the idea of someone taking offence kind of offends me on a rational level. If someone didnt want to be exposed to xmas or more precisely the people celebrating it then living in predominantly christian countries which have been so for hundreds of years is just plain moronic.

You have to be a christian to say 'merry christmas'? I thought that holiday was all about spending hours in the mall buying useless shit for your relatives?

Seirously. I'm an atheist, but atheists acting like douches when someone tells them 'merry christmas' would annoy me just as much as christians complaining about 'happy holidays'. Stop wining and spend money.

I actually had never heard of this bullshit debate before the past few weeks. Before reading these kind of threads on the internet recently (*cough*reddit*cough*), I had never considered the thought of 'happy holidays' being somehow anti-christian, and 'merry christmas' being solely for actual christians. People over here (Belgium) say either, it seems. And no one claims to be offended.

Re: Something that really pisses me off.

Easter is the celebration of his resurrection NOT his death. Good Friday would be the day that he died (at least in Catholicism). That isn't a celebration actually most people tend to cry during services on that day. This is completely off topic btw, and if you're so sick of discussing religion I'd like to point out the fact that YOU are the one to have made the comment that sparked the so-called debate.

This is also the reason I don't discuss religion openly, people are ignorant. I don't judge you for not believing so how dare you judge me or others for doing so? I quite like you, Rowan and you seem to be rather intelligent - the ignorant comments aren't becoming of you.

PS- you may not have wanted to piss off Alpha, but you've succeeded in irritating the shit out of me because your statements aren't factual. Period.

Re: Something that really pisses me off.

Oh, to answer the actual topic...

I don't really see any problem with saying 'Happy Holidays' or 'Season's Greetings'. If I were to be upset about it, it'd be more to do with it being a foreign import caused by television, since I've never in my life encountered a person who didn't say 'Merry Christmas' or 'Happy Christmas'.

This advert relates to it... Makes me laugh too.

If you don't follow a religion, why are your panties in a knot over people saying happy holidays?

Happy consumerist season veiled in the birth of Jesus, you heathen.

I personally don't care anymore. There are so many people of so many different faiths and beliefs that it's safer to just say Happy Holidays than to open up a can of worms and deal with some bullshit discussion like this. Now if it were Christmas Day, then I have no objections to it. Honestly, there's no reason to get so bent out of shape about it. Believe what YOU want to believe and don't let someone else bring you down during the holidays. Shit, it'd be different if people were saying something like "**** you Christian!", but it's just people going "oh, I don't know what your beliefs may be, but I hope you enjoy the season, because yknow, peace on earth and goodwill towards man."
