New Game: Final Fantasy III

I just received Final Fantasy III for the DS recently and I haven't started playing it yet.

My goal is to play all Final Fantasy games, even the spin-offs.

But I heard that Final Fantasy III is actually the sixth one released.

I'm really really confused, so I checked wikipedia... And it said the actual Final Fantasy III is the one remade for the DS.
Other gamesites said it wasn't.

Any help with my confusion?

Final Fantasy III for the SNEs is actually Final Fantasy VI.

Final Fantasy III for the NES (Japan only) and Final Fantasy III for the DS are the real III's.
