8's Best Character?

This is an interesting game to try and find a favorite main character in, because for the most part, they're all very similiar. In fact in almost every other game there is such a wide variety of characters that it becomes very engaging to try to get to know each of them, but here, and while this is one of my very favorite titles, I'd be very interested to hear which ones turned out to be your favorite.


Mine?

1. Squall - Ya know, I didn't necessarily want to, but there is so much more to him than really any other character in this game. He is strong, he is likeable, and I hesitate to flood the main character with praise, but he's really pretty worthy of a good overall ranking in the series.
2. Rinoa - Yeah yeah yeah, I know, I'm going chalk and just putting up the main characters here, but if you check the other boards, I don't do that a lot. It's just that Rinoa and Squall WERE FFVIII. I mean, the other characters took up space for the most part, rather than adding significant depth.
3. Zell - However, Zell was fun, and an exception. You did meet his folks, and see his room, and he was a cool guy to hang with. A great counterbalance to the expressionless Squall.
4. Quistis - It gets tough with these last 3. But she was leaderly and solid, although nothing much was learned about her after you got away from Balamb.
5. Selphie - Conversely to Quistis, you actually learned much more about her later with her friendships tied to Trabia. She was ok in battle, but so was pretty much everybody.
6. Irvine - Come on bro,,,,, you peed your pants when you got the chance to shoot!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF! Epic fail. Plus he looks exceeding girly.

What about Laguna? He's my favorite from that game... Also, Sorceress Edea. Going by the main cast, however...

1. Quistis Trepe: Badass lady with a whip. Sarcastic and funny. Not a bitch.
2. Irvine Kineas: Yeah he pissed his pants, but that just makes him more human. Also liked his cowboy getup, and his weapon of choice.
3. Squall Leonhart: Kinda a dick, but given some of the people surrounding him, maybe it's understandable. Had some pretty humorous deadpan one-liners and non-liners, now that I look back. Also, pretty bad ass, gotta admit.
4. Zell Dincht: Lulz, what a doofus. He REALLY wanted to see Squall's GUNBLADE, man! Still, he kicked a lot of ass in the right hands (not mine. I couldn't input his blitz-esque attack commands to save my life. Also, don't remember what they were actually called.)
5. Selphie Tilmitt: She was cute, bubbly. Hardly used her though.
6. Rinoa Heartilly: Probably only at the bottom of my list because of her annoying moments. Kinda a selfish little princess girl in some respects, but I don't hate her.

Quistis Trepe. I have to agree with Telegraph for number his 1. It was rare ever having a whip wielder. You could try making a clone in FFT, but it would have been a flail weapon with Two Hands and Blade Grasp. I loved her wit and hair, yet it was more how the character herself was written. She achieved her rank by the age of 18, corrrect? That pretty much answers this whole thread. Quistis Trepe is the best there is, the best there was, and the best that there ever will be.
Edea stayed as a secondary, but she ties for my second choice because she impales someone with an ice shard. That's just b@d@$$. Rinoa Heartilly gets my number 2 for being someone in a position of power who rebelled like a warrior and proved she wasn't a fake, stupid bitch.
Fujin takes my number 3, in which I say I wasn't concerned she's a NPC. Fujin and Raijin should've gotten a side story PSP game. Her power and skill were great, but the story had holes that could have been filled. Instead of taking place before or after, they really could have made it a side story game.

Quistis isn't a badass lol...her orange hair and lame sarcasm was annoying lol. And Irvine was more human for pissing your pants? Guess I better start peeing my pants to feel more alive. I agree with locke about Zell, he was so much cooler than Squall was, how you gonna get urself cut in the first 2 minutes? Lol

I think Laguna was the best character because he was nice and his music was cool. I loved playing those parts of the storyline.

Laguna would have to be the best character. Without his amazing ideas, we wouldn't be able to go into time compression and save the world.

Second from the top would have to be Irvine. He's the one that remembers the most about his past. He had to remind everyone else of their past in order to be able to move forward. They'd be lost without him.

Squall would be next. He's cute I think.

Then Rinoa. I don't know what it is, it could be my high patience for women, but I frikin love the girl.

Zell was annoying and so was Selphie and Quistis. The only reason I liked Zell was because of his strength.

I liked Squall the most. I can kind of relate to him. The quiet, closed off, keep-to-himself personality is how I am as well.

I wish Seifer was more of a permanent playable character, because he was pretty cool.

I liked Rinoa too and Quistis was decent. Laguna was decent also. Didn't really like the rest, though.

1. Squall, I always seem to love the main character most in any game I play!
2. Laguna, he was pretty sweet as a character, I wish we got to play with him more!
3. Rinoa, even though sometimes she acted like a spoilt brat, I love how much she managed to change Squall, that was enough for me.

Oddly I like Kiros just about the most. Have to say though, the more time that goes on the less love I have for this game and as such the characters no longer appeal like they used too. Final Fantasy 9 is a vastly superior game in my personal opinion.

Hmmm well 1 and 2 are Squall and Irvine for a balance of character depth/backstory and comic relief. Not to mention the awesome battle mechanics. Third for me is Laguna because of his contribution to story and added depth of character to both he and squall

1.) Sorceress Edea, most badass of all. She could bitchslap any of the main characters and send them flying.

I don't want to be typical but I think it was Squally.
Not because he was a 'cool and calm badass'.
Not because he was 'sexy and mysterious'.
But because he really goes through some character development.
Compare the Squall who hated other people and constantly made cynical comments to the Squall who realizes being alone isn't that great.
He realizes there are better things than being solitary and gradually learns to let people in.

That being said, I also liked Rinoa but more as a foil character to Squall.

IMO, Kiros is very underrated and not talked about enough in terms of being a quality character. He's very cerebral and serves as a good sidekick to Laguna; sort of like the voice of reason. I wouldn't put him up as the best character, but I think he's a guy who was very likeable and would have loved to have seen more of him in the game.

I'm picking Laguna and his friends because of the hilarious break from the main storyline they'd give. Great, likeable characters, and they do amuse me in all of their dream sequences.

Not to say I don't like Squall and co, I actually do, despite all the flack they seem to get. I don't know about anyone else, but I actually liked Squall's character. There seems to be a frequent thing about calling him 'emo', and let me not even get started on my dislike of the term in general. But the point was that he was closed off emotionally due to something that was traumatic to him as a child, which as we later found out, he didn't even remember thanks to GF usage. But the emotions and attitudes stuck with him. Although it is sometimes not very noticeable, he does start to develop by around the middle-point of Disk 2. And he is a very dependable and capable leader.

Oh, and the Master Fisherman.

I'm with you 100%. I hate when people try to put Squall and 'emo' in the same sentence because I look at Squall to be more independent by nature. Not to mention, he greatly changes as a person as the story goes on so it's hard to call him 'emo' when you're 3 quarters of the way through the game. Simply put, Squall was being a teenager who we all watched mature into a capable leader and caring friend.

Mine is Kiros to be honest, he was a good right hand man for Laguna and his weapons were really cool. I would love to have that as a costume sometime.
