Do you have a preference?
Don't hate me, but I find that I dislike Female main characters, because I like to get involved and basically feel like the characters when I play a game.
It's kinda hard when I play as, Jill(RE), Lightning(FF13) or Lara(TR).
I mean, It just doesn't work.

Lately I haven't really been attached to lead characters as far as video games go, male or female. They're either silent protagonists (so they're sort of you, but not really) or they're just very stereotypical. But then, I also don't play a wide variety of games. However I would say that the more interesting personalities are pushed onto side characters and that if there's anything interesting about the main character it has more to do with how they are tied to their surroundings, rather than the character being interesting in itself.
So with the exception of the one game here and there that breaks the mold, they're all boring and I don't tend to identify that easily.
I wish I brought an umbrella because it looks like another shitstorm's on its way. Or not.

I like playing as a female most of the time. The first characters I make in a video game are usually a representation of myself in terms of sex and karma. Then I branch out on other playthroughs, and makes males too.
If I can't choose the sex of my players, I don't really care whether they're male or female. I'm not picky. As long as the gameplay and story is good, I'm all set.

The gender of the main character doesn't really matter to me as long as that person has a good personality, are likeable etc. Although, if given the choice in games like Pokemon, i'll usually go with the male character as the females have been given increasingly strange outfits/ hair.

Is it easier to feel like the main character or attempt to build a personal relationship with his or her personality if it is the opposite sex?

I chose a male character if choice is available, who, if possible, I mold to resemble me as much as possible, thus having a deeper "connection" with the game than I normally would.
I found most female characters to be likeable, and if I'm going to play the game longer than usual having a nice virtual ass to look at is not a bad thing =).

I can relate to either male or female if their personality is established well enough for me. If I have my choice, I'm more partial to females since I am female and can relate to them better, but I don't need the main to be female. Hopefully, that makes sense.

If given a choice, I'll choose to play as the same sex as my own...but I've never had a problem with playing the opposite gender in games where you don't have a choice. The gender has never prevented me from identifying with the characters.
I generally prefer to play as a male lead, though if I have a choice like on DQIX, shit like that, I tend to go for female, but story wise I prefer to have a male lead. Dunno why, guess its just what Im used to

I really like female main characters like Terra,Yuna and Lightning.
The more of them, the better. I like them better, most of the time.
In terms of that i really like FFV,X-2 because they have most of playable females in the game.
Just dislike the same old male stereotypes, teenager dude that does the same thing over and over, gotten old.
The female main chars so far, have been way better in my opinion.
Although i do like Cloud,Squall and Zidane but thats it(and Bartz and Cecil are alright). But the chars after FFIX just started to get worse and worse in terms of creativity.
